How 'Dhurandhar 2' Gaslights its Own Protagonist

Despite being fully aware of just how vitriolic and propaganda-laden the first installment of Dhurandhar was, I wanted to give the sequel a fair chance. All of this to say that I was surprisingly moved by Jaskirat Singh Rangi (Ranveer Singh)'s backstory.

Atif Ahmed taunts him, addressing him as “smackiye da beta” (son of a drug dealer). Not only is Jaskirat severely underestimated by those around him, he is also failed by the very system meant to protect him. His father is hanged by a power-hungry MLA.

His sister is gang-raped and eventually murdered by men who were intoxicated with power. But the minute he decides to retaliate against this injustice, he is sentenced to jail. There is a sadness to Jaskirat’s story that I, as a critic, found myself unexpectedly engulfed by. For a moment, I was truly invested in this character arc. Somewhere, deep down, I was rooting for him.

Level heads needed to see bigger picture after rate hike

A warmonger in the White House is now responsible for a rate hike that will further squeeze mortgage holders and small businesses in Australia (“RBA warns recession may be unavoidable after raising rates again”, March 18). Real wage growth has flatlined. GDP per capita is currently up by an anaemic 0.9 per cent. So where are the domestic-driven inflation pressures? Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock points to strong employment growth but so what? The majority of employed workers are not spending big but rather struggling to make ends meet. It appears the Strait of Hormuz will be central to monetary policy for a while. Judging by the close vote to lift rates, there appear to be at least four level heads who hopefully see the bigger picture and can bring some sense to the debate (“A 5-4 vote says everything about the Reserve Bank’s dilemma”, March 18). The governor herself did not discount a recession. That means the budget, which was being touted as a “generational change” by a progressive treasurer, is now toast. Formula 1 team Aston Martin has dismissed speculation it will change its team principal.

The team has not finished either of the two grands prix this season, as it has faced major issues related to its Honda-supplied power unit.

The next race of the season will be held in Japan on March 29, a home race for Honda.

Struggling Formula 1 outfit Aston Martin says Adrian Newey will remain team principal despite increasing media speculation he will be replaced by Audi's Jonathan Wheatley.

The www.motorsport.com website reported the acclaimed designer would stand aside to focus on technical matters, with Wheatley returning to Britain from Audi's factory in Switzerland.

Newey became team principal last November on top of his wider role with the team.

Some outlets had tipped Wheatley to be his replacement as day-to-day team boss, although sources have told ESPN a deal is not done yet.

A Craven County man said years of playing the lottery paid off this week with a $2 million Powerball win.

Dietrich Kilpatrick of Dover said he has bought Quick Pick tickets for nearly every drawing over the past decade. On Monday, he matched all five white balls to win $1 million, and the prize doubled to $2 million after the 2X multiplier was applied, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

“I’ve been buying Quick Picks in every drawing for like 10 years,” Kilpatrick said.

Kilpatrick, a retired farmer of 42 years, purchased the $3 ticket at JD Gas & Grocery on N.C. 55 in Dover. Lottery officials said his was the largest prize won nationally in that drawing.

Craven County man’s persistence pays off with $2 million Powerball win

The NRL's match review committee have elected to not charge Kotoni Staggs over a dangerous throw during Thursday night's game against the Parramatta Eels.

The Brisbane Broncos centre was penalised and placed on report for the second half offence.

The tackle, which came as Parramatta looked for space down the left-hand side of the park with the score reading 28 to 26 at the time, saw Staggs make a one-on-one lifting tackle on Parramatta five-eighth Jonah Pezet.

Pezet landed on the point of his shoulder, rather than his head or neck, but clearly went past the horizontal and went on report for the offence.

Some young people in Guernsey say they are worried about the type of content being presented to them on their feeds by social media platforms.

The discussion was sparked by a recently released documentary by Louis Theroux, Inside the Manosphere which explores prominent men on social media and their views on what Netflix calls "ultra-masculinity."

Charley, 17, said she is worried about the role social media plays in promoting certain views on gender roles.

"If a person is already having some of those views, hearing it over and over again just reinforces the belief it's okay and that it's normal to think like that," she said.

As a mother of three boys, I’m increasingly frustrated by the rhetoric of “lost boys”. My boys aren’t lost. But they, like all of us, are collateral in a war for attention. One being waged by strategic influencers, business titans, political strategists and world leaders to further build wealth and power.
