    Kunal Kemmu’s lively comedy-drama, Single Papa, gets right into action from get-go. The actor plays Gaurav Gehlot, a brash, Haryanvi man-child, who wants to become a father much to the dislike of his wife, Aparna (Isha Talwar), an independent working woman. She complains about his immature outlook to life, his never-ending boyish behaviour as they decide to part ways. Gaurav’s persistence to father a baby, stays, though there’s little explanation about his desperation, and before exploring his motivations as a character, a bubbly, red-cheeked toddler is already wriggling in the backseat of his car. Call it Gaurav’s carelessness or convenient writing — he had merely left the car window open.

    Comedian Stanley Baxter dies aged 99

    Scottish actor and comedian Stanley Baxter has died at the age of 99.

    Born in Glasgow in 1926, he was one of the biggest stars on British television for several decades.

    Baxter starred in a number of hit series between the 1960s and the 1980s, and was also known for his acting roles and as a pantomime regular.

    His friend and biographer Brian Beacom said Baxter died on Thursday in Denville Hall, a north London care home for entertainment figures where he had lived since late 2023.

    Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Lunchtime Live programme, actress Elaine C Smith said Baxter was "an inspiration" and his death felt like "the end of something".

    The description “special” is overused in television schedules; Stanley Baxter’s programmes justify it. The comedian is one of the few stars whose reputation rests on a handful of astonishing one-offs – standalone comic extravaganzas screened in the 1970s and 1980s, first by ITV’s London Weekend Television and then the BBC.

    In both cases, the networks ended their associations with Baxter not because of lack of audience interest – at their peak, the shows reached more than 20 million viewers – but due to the colossal costs demanded by the performer’s vast and perfectionist visual ambition. One of Baxter’s favourite conceits was to re-create, in witty pastiche, scenes from big-budget Hollywood movies that made it look as if his versions had also spent millions of dollars.

    NEWSROOM — Iraq national soccer team coach Graham Arnold said the squad is fully prepared, both mentally and physically, for Friday’s Arab Cup quarterfinal against Jordan, emphasizing confidence in his players.

    Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Doha, Arnold said, “The players are mentally and physically ready to give their best in tomorrow’s match. We are going into the game with full readiness and will give everything to secure victory.”

    Arnold noted the absence of Hussein Ali due to a red card and acknowledged other injuries but said such challenges are part of football. He added that the tournament has been an important opportunity to identify the best lineup.

    McDonald’s Pulls Down AI-Generated Holiday Ad After Deluge of Mockery

    Update: McDonald’s has issued a very strange response to the drama.

    Thanks to the rise in popularity of generative AI, mainstream companies like Coca-Cola and Google are jumping on the bandwagon to plop out new advertisements. There’s just one issue: pretty much everybody hates it.

    This year, McDonald’s decided to get in on the corporate slopfest with a 45-second Christmas spot cooked up for its Netherlands division by the ad agency TBWANeboko. The entire thing is AI, and revolves around the thesis that the holiday season is the “most terrible time of the year.”

    Humbug aside, the ad assaults the viewer with rapidly-changing scenes played out in AI’s typically nauseating fashion. Because most videos generated with AI tend to lose continuity after a handful of seconds, short and rapidly-changing scenes have become one of the key tells that the clip you’re watching is AI.

    McDonald's pulls AI-generated Christmas advert following backlash

    McDonald's Netherlands has taken down a Christmas advert made with Artificial Intelligence (AI) following online backlash.

    The 45-second advert was produced with generative AI clips and released publicly on McDonald's Netherlands YouTube channel on 6 December.

    Viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the film, with one commenter calling it "the most god-awful ad I've seen this year".

    On 9 December McDonald's Netherlands removed the video, adding in a statement to BBC News that the moment served as "an important learning" as the company explored "the effective use of AI".

    The advert was created for McDonald's Netherlands by Dutch company TBWANeboko and US production company The Sweetshop.

    Nepal estimates millions in damages from September protests

    Kathmandu (AFP) – Nepal on Thursday estimated that the country suffered losses of about $586 million in September's deadly anti-corruption protests that ousted the government.

    The youth-led demonstrations, initially triggered by anger over a brief government ban on social media, were fuelled by deeper frustration over economic hardship and corruption.

    After a police crackdown killed young protestors, the riots spread and on the second day more than 2,500 structures were torched, looted or damaged.

    The committee formed to assess the damage caused during the protest submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday, the prime minister's secretariat said in a statement.

    GenZ protests in Nepal leave 77 dead, NPR 84 billion in damages: Report

    Kathmandu, Dec 11 (IANS) Nepal witnessed the loss of 77 lives and damage to physical property worth NPR 84.45 billion during the GenZ protests in early September, a government-formed committee has revealed.

    The committee formed to assess the damages caused during the GenZ movement on September 8 and 9, and to prepare a plan for the reconstruction of public infrastructure, submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday.

    According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, 20 people died on September 8, followed by 37 on September 9, and 20 more in the following days, bringing the total death toll to 77. The country witnessed massive destruction of public and private property on September 9, in response to the killing of GenZ protesters the previous day.

    It was a day to forget for India's pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh as they went wicketless and leaked runs during the second T20I against South Africa on Thursday, December 11. Bumrah conceded 45 runs off his four overs, which was his joint third-worst performance with the ball while Arshdeep didn't enjoy any home comfort being back in Punjab.

    India won the toss and opted to field in Mullanpur, where dew made its presence early on. The first two overs from Arshdeep and Bumrah did ask questions of the batters, but then they started to lose control as the conditions became ideal for batting. Arshdeep had a horror performance in the 11th over as he conceded seven wides, much to the anger of India coach Gautam Gambhir.

    South Africa has been dismissed for its lowest ever T20 score as India dominated the opening match of the series.

    Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya returned from a lengthy lay-off to smash 59 off just 28 deliveries in his side's 101-run win.

    The five-match series continues on Friday morning (12:30 am AEDT) in New Chandigarh.

    India has dismissed South Africa for their lowest T20 international score, bowling them out for 74 in a 101-run win that served both as a warning and an encouragement to Australia.

    If India defied losing the toss and getting the worst of the conditions, theoretically, in Cuttack, South Africa did the same in New Chandigarh to come roaring back into the T20I series, which is now locked 1-1 with three matches to go.

    India captain Suryakumar Yadav noted at the toss that the outfield was already dewy when the players were going through their pre-match warm-ups. It was a no-brainer to chase. But Quinton de Kock put India under pressure with a 46-ball 90 studded with seven sixes, and Donovan Ferreira finished brilliantly with an unbeaten 16-ball 30, taking South Africa to an imposing total of 213 for 4.

    ‘Pure carnage’: Rivals crumble in historic T20 disaster as milestone marred by controversy

    Hardik Pandya struck an unbeaten 59 and took a key wicket as India thrashed South Africa by 101 runs in the first T20 international on Tuesday.

    Pandya’s 28-ball blitz, laced with six fours and four sixes, powered reigning world champions India to 175-6 after they were put in to bat first in Cuttack.

    The Indian bowlers then combined to skittle South Africa for their lowest T20 total of 74 in 12.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series as part of their build-up for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February-March.
