Crew searching for Amelia Earhart plane lands at remote island infested with carnivorous crabs

A team of researchers have arrived at a remote island to inspect possible plane wreckage of famed aviator Amelia Earhart, who vanished in 1937 while flying around the world.

The group from the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and Purdue University arrived at Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific Ocean on Monday.

The search team's work, expected to take five days, could be hampered by giant land-dwelling crabs, as well as the El Niño climate phenomenon which is now the strongest ever recorded.

Coconut crabs, also known as Robber crabs, emerge at night to hunt for small mammals and seabirds, and will force the search crew to spend nights on their ship for their own safety.

Giant coconut crabs that roam a remote Pacific island where researchers are searching for Amelia Earhart's missing plane are so numerous that the team is sleeping offshore rather than on land.

A joint team from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute has arrived on Nikumaroro Island in Kiribati to investigate a mysterious object that some believe could be the wreckage of Earhart's aircraft, hoping to solve a disappearance that has baffled investigators for nearly 90 years.

After a five-day, 1,500km voyage across the South Pacific, the team began clearing a path through dense vegetation to reach the so-called Taraia Object, encountering several giant coconut crabs along the way.

What happened to Amelia Earhart? – Behind The News

AMELIA EARHARTA new expedition is hoping to solve one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history … what happened to Amelia Earhart? It's a question that's puzzled researchers and historians for nearly 90 years. But now, a team of researchers hope to find some answers here on Nikumaroro Island, which is a small island in the Pacific Ocean. They're investigating an object they reckon could be her long-lost plane. Amelia Earhart was one of the world's most famous pilots who set a whole bunch of records including becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean back in 1932 and in 1937, she attempted to fly around the entire world! But on the longest leg of her journey whilst flying somewhere over the Pacific Ocean…her radio messages stopped. It's the last time anyone heard from her. There are a lot of theories about what actually happened. One of them is called the "castaway theory “It’s the idea that Earhart and her navigator… Fred Noonan … didn't crash into the ocean but instead landed safely on a deserted island and survived there for a while and that's the theory this new mission is testing. Researchers have spotted a strange shape in satellite images which they've named the Taraia Object, and they reckon it could be the remains of Amelia Earhart’s plane because its size and shape match her plane's body and tail. A team of 17 researchers has set off for the island to investigate using drones and other special equipment to get a closer look. Could this help finally solve the mystery of Amelia Earhart? Well, we'll have to wait and see.
