After spending ten years developing her horror-comedy series Gnomes, co-writer Tegan Higginbotham had a concern plaguing her mind.
"We grew up on Mel Brook's comedies where Nazis are funny," she says.
Created by Joel Kohn (The Mirror), Higginbotham co-wrote the series with her husband Paul F Verhoeven, as well as pulling double duty as one half of a ditzy police duo, the other half being fellow comedian Matt Okine.
Gnomes might be set in a small Australian township but its set-up hinges on a deadly but petrified European gnome queen who was stolen by the Nazis in the final whiffs of WWII as Hitler's last-ditch attempt to regain power.
Rightly described as âGremlins meets Hot Fuzzâ, this fun series has the high-spirit and gusto one hopes for in a show about evil killer gnomes
One can never trust marketing materials to accurately describe a movie or TV series, but Iâm pleased to report that Gnomesâ official synopsis gets its tone right: âGremlins meets Hot Fuzz.â This six-part horror-comedy series indeed feels like the kind of rambunctious, high-spirited production thatâd be right up the alley of Joe Dante and Edgar Wright, directors of the aforementioned films. Particularly in its air of barely controlled chaos, staged with a slight wink to the audience but never too self-consciously.

Evoking the beloved, splatter-gore spirit of classic 80s monster mashups like Gremlins and the dark laugh-out-loud humour of Hot Fuzz, the wild horror comedy Stan Original Gnomes premieres October 8. The series stars Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) alongside an ensemble cast of beloved Australian actors, including Megan Smart (Black Snow), Matt Okine (Mother & Son, Stan Original The Other Guy), and Luke McGregor (Rosehaven).
In the quiet suburb of Nompton, Senior Sergeant Arnold Kipps (Butterfield) is having the worst day of his life. His ex-partner and ex-flame Ellie McKay (Smart) has just arrived to shut down his local police station—right as an ancient, evil force is awakened by the bloodthirsty Gnome Queen. Plunged into pure, unadulterated chaos by a hellish horde of killer ceramic gnomes, Arnold and Ellie must band together with a ragtag team of misfit cops, rebellious teens, and an ambitious mayor to save their town from total destruction.
