Ninja is bringing its latest frozen drink maker to Australia, with the new SLUSHi Twist offering two independently prepared frozen drinks from a single machine.

The Ninja SLUSHi Twist Frozen Drink Maker (FS701BRANZ) goes on sale in Australia today, following strong demand in the US, where SharkNinja says the appliance sold out within two hours of launching.

Building on the original Ninja SLUSHi, the new model incorporates two separate 2.1-litre freezing vessels, allowing different drinks to be prepared and dispensed at the same time. Each vessel has a maximum liquid fill of 1.4 litres, while total vessel capacity is 4.2 litres.

Mike Baird will step down as Cricket Australia chair at next month's annual general meeting, the governing body said in a statement this morning.

Baird, the former NSW Premier who has been a driving force behind CA's push towards the privatisation of Big Bash Leagues clubs, will leave the CA Board he has served on for six years. He had been chair since February 2023.

Former Test batter David Boon will take over at the October 28 AGM as the interim chair while a process to appoint a full-time chair takes place over the coming months.

The Labor government appears quite happy to make compulsory superannuation an election issue. And the Coalition is more than willing to oblige, promising to support greater choice for Australians when it comes to their retirement money.

Opposition housing spokesperson Andrew Bragg has outlined his party's latest position in the debate about letting workers use their growing super money for more immediate advantage. In a speech on Tuesday to the Financial Services Council, Bragg said he wanted to "continue the conversation the nation needs to have", lamenting the growing number of people renting in retirement.

"Our national savings policy can help drive home ownership, especially in retirement," he said. "I am concerned the growing trend of retired renters will change the economic and social character of the nation."

Coalition super plan would be a gift to banks

Opposition housing spokesman Andrew Bragg wants to give a gift to the banks (“Super wars escalate as Coalition leans into mortgage plan”, September 23). At present, if someone gets into negative equity because of slumping house prices, it is not in the interest of the banks to send them broke by taking their deposit and selling the property to cover the mortgage. The value might not be enough, so the banks leave the borrower alone in the expectation that they will pay down the mortgage and restore the bank’s safety. But if the mortgage were secured by a lien over the borrower’s super, the bank would then have an incentive to call the loan and sell the house, knowing that the difference would be recovered from the super collateral whenever the super amount was larger than the negative equity. The bank could then lend the money to a lower-risk borrower. This would leave the original borrower homeless and poorer, having forfeited the deposit and some of their super. We cannot rely on the banks to act in the interests of the borrowers. Bragg should drop this idea like a hot potato. Alan Stanley, Upper Corindi

Australia’s big banks hike fees, slash rewards as card surcharge ban looms

Australia’s biggest banks are rolling out fee hikes and slashing points programs to limit the sting from the Reserve Bank’s impending card surcharge ban.

Surcharges on debit and credit payments will be scrapped on October 1 following a decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), billed as a way to save Australians money on every transaction.

The impending ban is expected to cost banks about $600 million per year.

This will include a reduction in interchange fees, which are paid by businesses to banks.

But financial institutions are finding ways to claw the money back through increasing card fees, raising interest rates and slashing customer loyalty programs.

When Labor MP Jerome Laxale asked bank executives appearing before a parliamentary inquiry two years ago why his $5 cup of coffee cost $5.08 if he paid with a card, he could hardly have envisaged the monumental shake-up of the loyalty points market that was to come.

This week, Commonwealth Bank overhauled its loyalty scheme, signalling it would compete more aggressively with its Yello program against Qantas Frequent Flyer in an about-face that showed the reward-points market is shifting, and quickly. Arguably, it is possible to draw a line between that moment and the seemingly innocuous question two years earlier.
