Neil the seal swims out to sea leaving joy in his wake

Videos of Neil the seal have brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world.

Experts say there's a reason so many of us have fallen in love with this special seal.

Authorities say it appears Neil has returned to the sea but he'll keep coming back.

The 1,000-kilogram marine mammal has spent the past few weeks at Seven Mile Beach, near Hobart, in southern Tasmania.

His bollard-bashing, fence-crushing, traffic cone-chewing antics have turned him into an internet sensation.

"Neil the seal is a global treasure," one fan posted on Instagram.

Is Neil the seal lonely and poorly brought up or just a hooligan?

Like many adolescents with an outsized social media presence and a distinct lack of constructive peer support, Neil the seal is exhibiting performative behaviour that is causing serious concern to those charged with his care and supervision.

Neil is the five-year-old elephant seal born in southern Tasmania who still hauls himself ashore at or near his birthplace twice a year – once in October to moult, and once mid-year during mating season.

In his early visits ashore as a playful pup of just half a ton or so, Neil spent time wrestling traffic cones or sprawling out across driveways or pavements, attracting a substantial global audience to social media posts about his shore visits.

Neil the seal is more than a viral animal. He’s become a global folk hero

I am one of Hobart’s many residents who travelled to a nearby beach to witness Neil the seal – an animal that has been receiving global attention for his wild personality and humorous antics.

Neil’s latest arrival in Tasmania was in late June. Due to his celebrity status, a security detail from the local council had been tasked with limiting all pedestrian access to the animal.

On my visit yesterday evening, people peered from a distance at the sleeping giant. A constant stream of cars was permitted to travel on the road, slowly, as though on an impromptu safari.

US judge tosses out Musk’s bid to void Twitter fraud verdict

Jurors had found Twitter owner Musk liable for tweets in which he questioned whether the platform was overrun by fake and spam accounts that had led to a slump in share prices.

A United States federal judge has rejected Elon Musk’s bid to void a jury verdict finding that Musk, the world’s richest person, defrauded Twitter investors by trying to drive down the social media company’s stock price after agreeing to a $44bn takeover.

US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco, California on Monday also denied Musk’s motion to decertify the class of investors, and granted the investors’ motion for prejudgment interest. The judge did, however, find Musk not liable for one of his challenged tweets.

Elon Musk suffers massive setback in $2.5 billion Twitter fraud case

Elon Musk’s aggressive attempt to wipe away a massive legal defeat has been flatly rejected by a federal judge, leaving the tech billionaire facing a potential $2.5 billion penalty.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco officially shot down Musk’s bid to void a March jury verdict. That verdict found the world's richest man liable for defrauding Twitter investors by intentionally trying to manipulate and tank the social media company's stock price during his chaotic $44 billion takeover in 2022, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

In a stinging written order, Judge Breyer did not hold back against the billionaire's defense strategy.

US judge rejects Elon Musk’s bid to overturn Twitter fraud verdict

Judge Breyer upholds jury finding that two Musk tweets misled investors during the $44 billion Twitter acquisition, with potential damages reaching $2.6 billion

A federal judge in San Francisco has shut down Elon Musk’s attempt to undo a jury verdict that found him liable for misleading Twitter investors. The ruling keeps Musk on the hook for what could be one of the largest securities fraud damage awards in recent memory.

Judge Charles R. Breyer rejected Musk’s post-trial motions during a June 18 hearing, expressing clear skepticism toward the arguments for overturning or retrying the case. Plaintiffs’ lawyers have estimated damages in the range of $2.5 billion to $2.6 billion, stemming from the impact Musk’s statements had on Twitter’s stock price during the chaotic acquisition saga.

Germany parts ways with coach following disastrous exit

World Cup daily news. We will bring you the latest from around the world as the FIFA World Cup 2026™ finally gets under way (All times AEST).

After their disappointing exit against Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Tuesday (AEST), Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has parted ways with the DFB.

It's been reported by German newspaper Bild that the 38-year-old has left his position after it was 'strongly encouraged' that he resigns.

The former Bayern Munich manager has been in charge of the national side since 2023.

Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked to the position.

And with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, Switzerland are through to the Round of 16.

Jurgen Klopp is back! Germany job accepted two years after Liverpool exit as Julian Nagelsmann is replaced following 2026 World Cup flop

Jurgen Klopp has 'officially' agreed to return to the technical area as the new manager of the Germany national team. The former Liverpool boss will step into the vacancy left by Julian Nagelsmann following a dismal 2026 World Cup campaign that ended in total heartbreak for Die Mannschaft.

Klopp has reportedly accepted an offer to become the new head coach of Germany, ending his two-year hiatus from the dugout. Klopp walked away from Anfield in 2024 and has most recently been serving as the head of global football for the Red Bull Group, but the allure of the national team job has finally tempted him back into the heat of elite competition.

Swiatek and Rybakina out of Wimbledon as Eala and Mertens pull off upset wins

Wimbledon’s bottom half of the women’s draw was blown wide open on Saturday as the defending champion, Iga Swiatek, and the world No 2, Elena Rybakina, crashed out in third-round upsets.

Swiatek’s title defence came to an end at the hands of the rising Filipina star Alexandra Eala, who undid the Pole in straight sets 7-6 (9), 6-2 while the Belgian 25th seed Elise Mertens dismantled Rybakina on a dramatic day at SW19.

For a player carrying the hopes of an entire nation, Eala looked remarkably unburdened on Centre Court against the reigning Wimbledon champion. The 21-year-old produced the finest performance of her career, edging an epic opening-set tie break before racing away in the second to reach the fourth round.

Serena and out, Joint loses in three sets; Princess of Wales attends Wimbledon, de Minaur advances

London: Australian title hope Alex de Minaur refuses to look any further than his next match as his wide-open Wimbledon draw presents a golden opportunity for a career-best grand slam run.

The world No.6 breezed into the third round at Wimbledon without dropping a set for the second time in his career, dispatching Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, in a rematch of their recent s’Hertogenbosch semi-final.

De Minaur was on and off the court inside two hours, which was helpful on a steamy London day, and he awaits American Zachary Svadja, who ousted s’Hertogenbosch champion Kamil Majchrzak, 2-6, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 across almost three hours.

Emma Raducanu pulls out of Wimbledon after ‘niggle develops into stress fracture’

Raducanu, who was seeded 30th, had been scheduled to face Antonia Ruzic at 1pm on Monday on No 1 Court. In a statement, Raducanu said: “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon.

“I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through.

Billionaire Leon Black walks out of Epstein investigation hearing

Billionaire investor Leon Black walked out of a closed-door hearing with the congressional committee investigating late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after refusing to answer questions on non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), say lawmakers.

Black, whose name comes up in the Epstein files released by the justice department, testified voluntarily. But he left after he was asked about NDAs he may have signed, the panel chairman said.

The House of Representatives Oversight Committee issued two subpoenas for Black to share NDAs and give an on-camera deposition under oath.

Black left Apollo Global Management, which he co-founded, in 2021 amid scrutiny over his Epstein ties. He denies wrongdoing.

House committee subpoenas billionaire over nondisclosure agreements after he reportedly refused to answer questions

Billionaire financier Leon Black’s testimony before a House committee investigating Jeffrey Epstein ended abruptly on Friday morning after members from both parties said Black refused to answer questions about non-disclosure agreements.

James Comer, the Republican who chairs the committee, told reporters that the committee had already issued two subpoenas to Black on Friday – one demanding he produce any nondisclosure agreements, and another to appear again before the committee next month.

Speaking to reporters outside the room, Comer said that “the NDAs are between him and other women” and that the committee wants to know “was Jeffrey Epstein involved in the NDAs? Was he involved in writing? Was he involved in awarding funds to the women for the NDAs? … What was the reason for the NDAs? We want to know everything about the NDAs.”

Sri Lanka and West Indies renew their Test rivalry in the Caribbean on Thursday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The host is looking to reignite its Test form after losing seven of eight matches played.

In the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle Sri Lanka is in third and will want to continue to succeed to get a spot in next year’s final.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua da Silva, a fixture on the West Indies side for five years before he lost his place at the start of 2025, is set for a return thanks to the strength of consecutive outstanding domestic seasons.

How much dividend income can investors bank on in the next couple of years?

CBA slips 0.9% in Sydney with rate pressure holding

Commonwealth Bank of Australia dropped 0.9% Thursday, finishing at A$162.23 as global rate worries pressured Australian banks. The S&P/ASX 200 gave up 55.2 points to close at 8,911.1. Sydney trading was closed at publication.

CBA’s drop is key because the Reserve Bank of Australia pausing rates hasn’t removed investor worries about the stock. Higher borrowing costs could stick around or even go up while households are already showing some pressure. Morningstar’s Nathan Zaia said this week that Australian bank stocks remain “expensive after the share-price correction.” Morningstar

Selling hit more than just CBA. Westpac fell 1.1%, National Australia Bank shed 0.9%. ANZ finished up 0.3%. The moves point to investors cutting risk in rate-sensitive financial stocks, not reacting to new CBA results.
