Buckley pulls out of North coach race as Lions board considers selection process
Nathan Buckley has withdrawn from the race to become North Melbourne’s next senior coach, delivering a major twist in the Kangaroos’ search for Alastair Clarkson’s replacement.
Two industry sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed to this masthead that Buckley had informed those involved in the process that he will not pursue the vacant position, ruling himself out of a return to senior coaching at Arden Street.
Buckley was due to formally present to the coaching panel on Saturday, but told the club late last week that he would be removing himself from the process.
It means Clarkson’s successor is set to be a first-time coach, with Daniel Giansiracusa, Jaymie Graham, David Hale and North assistant Xavier Clarke all in the mix.
Another huge name exits North Melbourne coaching race
Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has dropped out of the race to become the next North Melbourne coach, according to The Age’s Sam McClure.
Buckley’s exit from the vacancy means the Kangaroos have seemingly overlooked all the experienced coaches on the market, including premiership coaches and club greats John Longmire and Adam Simpson.
The Age is reporting that Buckley made the call not to pursue the position after initially agreeing to present for the job on Saturday and that North will now likely head down the path of an untried coach.
It comes after they shockingly sacked coach Alastair Clarkson with a year to run on his contract following the 2026 season.
