Origin coaches brush off concerns over any conflict of interest

AAMI AFL Origin coaches Chris Scott and Dean Cox have laughed off concerns they will use their positions to lure some of the AFL's biggest stars to their clubs

CHRIS Scott has brushed off Ken Hinkley's concerns about AAMI AFL Origin coaches having a conflict of interest, joking his presence at Victoria may even put off players from joining Geelong.

Scott will coach Victoria in Saturday's Origin blockbuster at Optus Stadium, with Sydney coach Dean Cox given the reins of Western Australia.

Hinkley, who coached Port Adelaide for 13 years before standing down at the end of last season, has raised concerns about the potential for Origin coaches to lure the AFL's biggest stars to their respective clubs.

Star raids? AFL boss responds to ‘absolute advantage’ criticism of Origin coaches

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon has defended the decision to have current club coaches in charge of State of Origin teams after criticism from Ken Hinkley that there may be a conflict of interest.

Hinkley suggested on SEN it was “an absolute advantage” for Victorian coaches Chris Scott and Sam Mitchell and Western Australia bosses Dean Cox and Justin Longmuir to “create a connection” with the game’s top stars and potentially help poach them to their clubs down the track.

Chris Scott has declared that AFL clubs have been speaking to rival players for years in response to claims he will use his time as Victorian coach to form connections with potential Geelong recruits.

Scott said there was as much chance he would turn players off as he would be to win them over while he was embedded as a State Of Origin leader in Perth.
