Project Hail Mary review – Ryan Gosling’s charm carries unserious last-ditch space mission
Tale of a brilliant molecular biologist cast into outer space with only a helpful alien for company is a bit silly, but Gosling’s charisma keeps it watchable
This is a movie, adapted from Andy Weir’s sci-fi bestseller, about a desperate astronaut mission of the future, named by Nasa after the “Hail Mary pass†in American football, launched into space in a last-ditch attempt to save Planet Earth, dying because a string of alien microbes are snuffing out the sun.
Hunky high school science teacher Dr Ryland Grace, played with seductive, unruffled good humour by Ryan Gosling, wakes up from his induced coma on this spacecraft, with wacky long hair, straggly beard and zero memory of why he is aboard. The rest of the crew are dead, and Grace must now figure out how he got there and how to rescue humanity.
‘Project Hail Mary’: What The Critics Are Saying About Big-Budget Ryan Gosling Space Movie
Anticipation has been high for the arrival of Amazon MGM’s big-budget space movie Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling.
The Phil Lord- and Christopher Miller-directed space adventure, which is eyeing a $50 million-plus box office opening off an estimated $150M+ production budget, sees Gosling’s school teacher Ryland Grace wake up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth. As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing the sun, and save Earth. An unexpected friendship may be the key to this. Sandra Hüller is among supporting cast.
The reviews are coming in and it’s fair to say that the early read on the movie is that it’s a critical hit. The film, which opens March 20, currently has a 94% score from 70+ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rousing 'Project Hail Mary' is 2026's first great movie – Review
Who knew putting glasses on Ryan Gosling and giving him an alien best friend could lead to something so spectacular – and the first great movie of 2026?
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, “Project Hail Mary” (★★★★ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters March 20) is an epic space adventure that checks all the sci-fi boxes – emphasis on “sci” there – and casts Gosling as a brainy Everyman who is mankind’s last shot to avoid extinction. Funny and dramatic when it needs to be as well as exceptionally rousing throughout, the movie perfectly captures the story of human resilience and interstellar bromance that Andy Weir’s 2021 brilliant novel did so well.
