    Spain’s King Felipe VI thanked the country’s World Cup-winning squad on Monday, telling the players their triumph belonged to the whole nation.

    “When our national team plays, we all play. When you won, you won for all of Spain,” he said at a reception for the squad after they won Spain’s second World Cup title.

    Two-time Ballon d’Or winner and football trendsetter dies, aged 75

    Kevin Keegan, the two-time Ballon d’Or-winning football star who captained and coached England’s national team and won the European Cup with Liverpool, has died. He was 75.

    Keegan’s death was announced on Tuesday by his former club Newcastle, where he had been both a player and coach.

    For a time in the 1970s, Keegan transcended the English game with his celebrity status.

    One of just four Englishmen to win the Ballon d’Or, he wasn’t just a brilliant football player who dovetailed nimbleness and an eye for goal with a relentless hunger and work rate stemming from his working-class upbringing in northern England.

    Kevin Keegan: Liverpool legend and former Newcastle United and England manager dies aged 75

    Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has died at the age of 75, seven weeks after he revealed he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer, his family have confirmed.

    One of English football's most decorated players, Keegan enjoyed spells at Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle during an illustrious playing career.

    He later went on to manage Newcastle, Fulham, England and Manchester City.

    Keegan revealed he had stage four cancer in June, which is the most advanced stage of cancer and means the disease has spread to other parts of the body.

    His family initially disclosed he was battling the disease in January, after he had "further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms" in hospital.

    Jake Melksham, the last active AFL player from Essendon’s supplements era, has supported James Hird’s bid to return as coach of the Bombers.

    Now playing an important role as an experienced member of Melbourne’s forward line, Melksham made 114 appearances for the Bombers – including four seasons under Hird – between 2010 and 2015.

    The 34-year-old also played alongside current Bombers president Andrew Welsh, who heads the panel to pick the club’s next senior coach.

    Hird this week met with Bombers officials, declaring he is “all in” on wanting to coach Essendon again.

    “Andrew Welsh is a good friend and an old teammate, I know he’ll make the right call on who he thinks is the right person, and he probably won’t succumb to external noise,” Melksham said.

Standing nearby, Mbappé watched the sequence unfold. As the ball crossed the line, he flung his left arm into the air, wiped his face with his jersey, then walked back toward midfield.

    One of soccer’s biggest stars and a player capable of changing a game on his own was unable to do so this time. Not against a perfectly organized and disciplined Spanish side that frustrated France at every turn and made the tournament favorite look ordinary.

    Police made 98 arrests following disorder in Paris after France’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain on Tuesday.

    The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed 98 people, including 21 minors, had been taken into police custody, with the most significant offences including the firing of mortar fireworks at emergency services, such as fire stations and police cars.

    Among the other offences, 12 trash containers were set alight on Raymond Queneau street on the outskirts of the city centre, and firefighters were targeted with mortar rounds when arriving on the scene, but were not hit, the prosecutor’s office added.

    July 15, 2026, Mountain View, CA — On July 16, 2024 a daytime meteor shook New York City with a sonic boom as it passed just south of the Statue of Liberty. Now, an international team of researchers reports in the journal Science Advances that a short time later, a more than two-pound meteorite crashed through the roof of a house in the town of Hillsborough, New Jersey.

    "A forensic study of the fragments revealed that they contained preserved bits from near the surface of a small primitive asteroid where it experienced concentrated salty fluids—a process not previously known from this type of proto planet world," said lead author and meteor astronomer Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley.

    A meteorite weighing more than 2 pounds (1 kilogram) that crashed through the roof of a New Jersey home two years ago could shed light on ancient water in the solar system.

    Observers across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania reported seeing a fireball streaking across the sky during the daytime on July 16, 2024. As the object whizzed by just south of the Statue of Liberty, it caused a sonic boom felt by New York City and New Jersey residents.

    The spectacle came from a space rock, estimated to be the size of a heavy airline bag, that zipped through Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 32,000 miles per hour (14.4 kilometers per second).

    Chemistry From Another World Found in The Famous Hillsborough Meteorite

    In July 2024, residents of the New York metropolitan area were treated to a rare spectacle as a fireball exploded in the sky, rattling the region with a sonic boom.

    One New Jersey homeowner got an even closer encounter – a high-speed meteorite fragment punched through her ceiling, shattered, and came to rest on her bedroom floor.

    The Hillsborough meteorite, as it was later named, was a spectacular boon for science: It was recovered almost immediately, and landing in a house, had escaped rain and soil, minimizing Earth contamination – and preserving its chemistry in unusually pristine condition.

    Now, scientists have found evidence that concentrated salty brines once flowed through its parent asteroid, driving complex chemistry and leaving behind unusual minerals and a rich suite of organic compounds.

    Meteorite that crashed into New Jersey home contains "alien world chemistry," scientists say

    A meteorite that crashed into a New Jersey home held prebiotic molecules and other "building blocks of life," astronomers said in a newly published paper. 

    The meteorite struck the home in July 2024. The homeowner preserved the fragments in glass jars using disposable gloves and aluminum foil, allowing an international team of experts to study them in detail, the researchers said in a paper published Wednesday in the journal ScienceAdvances.  

    When scientists examined the preserved fragments, they were able to determine the meteorite was made of a rare, primitive material called CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite. This is only the second observed fall of such a meteorite, making it "one of the most scientifically valuable meteorites ever recovered," according to a news release from the SETI Institute, a nonprofit research organization based in California.

    Queensland Reds general manager Sam Cordingley has called on World Rugby to crack down on hip-drop tackles as it emerged the Roosters have joined the cross-code race to sign outstanding young Reds star Treyvon Pritchard.

    Pritchard suffered a broken ankle and syndesmosis when subjected to a dangerous hip-drop-style tackle in the Junior Wallabies’ loss to Wales at the Under-20s World Championship in Georgia on Monday night (AEST).

    Pritchard is due to fly back into Brisbane on Thursday and undergo surgery, which will sideline him for several months and potentially scuttle any call-up this year for the Wallabies and/or Australia A.

    Rugby urged to follow NRL’s lead after injury to Roosters target

    The NRL's crackdown on hip-drop tackles has been held up as a blueprint for rugby union, with the code now pushing for similar laws after a horror injury to a player on the radar of several league clubs.

    Queensland Reds officials are advocating for World Rugby to outlaw the dangerous tackling technique following the serious injury suffered by rising star Treyvon Pritchard during a Junior Wallabies clash earlier this week.

    Pritchard broke his ankle and also suffered a syndesmosis injury in the incident, with the injury expected to sideline the highly-rated outside back for an extended period.

    While the debate has sparked widespread discussion in rugby circles, it also carries significant interest for the NRL, with multiple clubs already positioning themselves to lure the youngster across to the 13-man code.

    France’s captain has played with a sense of unfinished business but he will be 31 when the next World Cup begins

    It was only last month that Kylian Mbappé suggested all roads may lead to Florida. He was in sufficiently mischievous mood to reveal David Beckham had been chewing his ear off about a move to Major League Soccer, dangling the prospect of a reunion with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

    “We will see, I don’t know,” he said. “The American culture is different. There are no limits to ambitions, I like it.”

    Yet Mbappé will walk out in Miami on Saturday nursing clipped wings and thwarted aspirations. The third-place playoff retains some prestige given the names involved. But it pales in comparison with the broken dream of another final; the regrets from France’s semi-final defeat by Spain, their third in three years against the European champions, will linger into the American summer.
