Slow Horses season six review – it gets harder to enjoy Gary Oldman’s spy thriller every year
The showâs creator has gone, itâs been retooled as a conventional thriller and it feels like itâs starting to run out of ideas â even if itâs as slick and confident as ever
This is a new Slow Horses: season six is the first not to be guided by its creator, Will Smith, a writer whose previous work on The Thick of It and Veep explained why this espionage saga had an unusually sharp comic tongue. The absence of Smithâs drollery is discernible in a more straight-faced new story, but the bigger problem is one of a creative work naturally eroding over time. Slow Horses is now old.
‘Slow Horses’ Renewed for Season 8 at Apple TV
“Slow Horses” has been renewed for an eighth season at Apple TV following the spy thriller’s Emmy win for outstanding directing in a drama series.
The six-episode Season 8 is adapted from “Clown Town,” the ninth book in Mick Herron’s “Slough House” series. Gary Oldman, who was nominated for lead actor in a drama series at the Emmys, will return as the grumpy yet lovable Jackson Lamb.
Season 8 “sees Jackson Lamb and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) face off in their most explosive confrontation yet,” according to its synopsis. “When a botched attempt to blackmail the Park puts Taverner on the offensive, it is up to Lamb to unravel one of MI5’s darkest secrets and put an end to it once and for all.”

‘Slow Horses’ Star Gary Oldman Reveals That “Spies Love This Show”
âIâm not very good at putting my feet up and kicking back,â Gary Oldman tells me. Thatâs clear. Heâs one of the finest actors of his generation, with the versatile résumé to prove it: Sid Vicious, Dracula, Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirius Black, Herman Mankiewicz, Winston Churchill. (Not to mention his Emmy-nominated guest-star turn on Friends.) But Oldmanâs most delightful role to date is his current one: Jackson Lamb on the Apple TV British spy series Slow Horses. Vanity Fair caught up with Oldman, who is as genial as his character is curmudgeonly, ahead of the showâs season six premiere on September 16.
