Kilometer-high Saudi tower inches closer to world's tallest record

The JEC Tower has hit another milestone on its journey to become the new world's tallest skyscraper. The building is rapidly moving toward the halfway mark and has reached a height of 430 m (1,410 ft), with around 570 m (1,870 ft) left to go until the record-breaking megatall is completed.

Located in the port city of Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, the JEC Tower (which also goes by Jeddah Economic Company Tower or Jeddah Tower) is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, the former responsible for the design of the current world's tallest building, the 828-m (2,717-ft) Burj Khalifa. Once finished, this latest supertall will include at least 157 floors and will be almost twice the height of the tallest building in the USA, the 541-m (1,776-ft) One World Trade Center.

Tower set to redefine global skyline passes 430m mark on path to becoming world's tallest building

Despite building work starting over 13 years ago amid financial and contractor issues, construction has finally resumed on Jeddah Tower — the structure which is set to become the world's tallest building with a planned finished height of over 1,000 meters.

The Burj Khalifa has long-held the title of the world's tallest building since construction finished in 2009, standing at a staggering 828 meters and overtaking Taipei 101 for the title with a lead of over 300 meters in the end.

A similar smashing of the record could soon be achieved by Jeddah Tower, however, as it nears its estimated completion date of August 2028 with progress finally resuming.

More than 1,500 Brisbane children listed as experiencing homelessness

Of the families recorded by Brisbane Zero, 321 identified as being homeless for the first time. (ABC News: Patrick Rocca)

New data from Brisbane Zero shows last financial year there were 984 families, including 1,539 children, who were identified by name as experiencing homelessness in the city.

The snapshot is used to understand the scale of homelessness in Brisbane, and to recommend ways to improve the situation.

Caitlyn Wheatley, a youth ambassador with the Foyer Foundation, reminded people to remember that a person sleeping rough is "someone's someone".

More than 70 per cent of families listed by name as experiencing homelessness in Brisbane last year had a single mother as the sole parent, new data shows.

The census is less than a week away and many Australians are still unsure about when and how they must complete the compulsory national survey.

It could lead some to commit a costly blunder by failing to fill out the census, or providing false information.

Census night falls on Tuesday, August 11 and most households will complete the census online.

The census is mandatory and anyone in Australia who does not fill it out on or by Tuesday, August 11 risks being fined up to $364 a day.

You still have to do the census if you are travelling or away from home on census night, but Australians who are overseas on August 11 don’t need to complete it.

How Rene Russo built property portfolio after Hollywood exit

Rene Russo was one of the most bankable actresses of the 1990s, commanding multimillion-dollar paychecks alongside Mel Gibson and Pierce Brosnan before vanishing from the spotlight.

Now sitting on a $60m ($US40m) net worth, The Hollywood superstar has built a savvy property portfolio generating tens of thousands in monthly income.

While stepping back from acting, the Lethal Weapon 3 star and her screenwriter husband Dan Gilroy relied on a multimillion-dollar Los Angeles real estate collection.

The couple put one of their Brentwood residences up for rent, asking $30,000 ($US19,500) per month.

Built in the early 1990s, the four-bedroom residence sits on a wooded hillside with views across surrounding canyons. The couple purchased the home in 1999 for $3.4m ($US2.4m).

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson says he won't be pushing for a contract extension in the off-season after another frustrating year for the Kangaroos.

Clarkson has one year left on his five-year contract, and he urged the club to mimic others like Brisbane and Adelaide by "sticking to the path".

The Kangaroos, who are 13th on the ladder, face a challenging run home starting with Western Bulldogs on Thursday night.

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson is unfazed going into the final year of his contract, saying he just needs a "handshake".

‘Clarko’ looks exasperated. It’s time for a hard conversation

In the past five matches, North Melbourne have been sixth in the competition for average age and fifth for games experience.

Although there is a big hole in the middle when it comes to age and experience, they should be performing better than they have in the past five matches when a wildcard chance has been up for grabs.

Their inaccuracy has been costly but combined with the overuse of handball and indefensible turnovers in the back half, they have collapsed to 13th on the ladder.

Billboards promoting improvement aren’t created from two wins over Essendon and Richmond, Carlton on Good Friday, Port Adelaide, Gold Coast and West Coast.

‘Comes to an end for all greats’: Big Clarko question that must be answered as ‘ugly’ reality looms

Garry Lyon says Alastair Clarkson deserves to lead North Melbourne into 2027, but hard questions need to be asked on whether the four-time premiership boss can coach the “contemporary” game.

Clarkson says he’s unfazed by mounting external pressure that he labelled “water off a duck’s back,” as he prepares to go into the final season of a five-year deal.

Anti-weapons protesters who vandalised a defence manufacturer and set nearby vehicles alight could face life imprisonment after police said the incident was being investigated as an act of terrorism by “far-left extremists”.

The Australian federal police, their Victorian counterparts and spy agency Asio are examining whether the incident at Melbourne-based Lovitt Technologies on 5 July 2025 was potentially perpetrated by “far-left extremists, motivated by anarchist and revolutionary ideologies”, a joint statement said.

The alleged perpetrators were being investigated in relation to the offences of engaging in a terrorist act under the federal criminal code and “other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts”, the AFP said.

Authorities investigating an arson attack on a Victorian defence manufacturer last year are now considering it a possible act of far-left terror.

Shortly after the arson attack at Lovitt Industries, a video emerged from a group claiming responsibility and linking the incident to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

AFP Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall said authorities were working to identify those responsible, releasing new images of the suspects.

In April 2029, a Massive Asteroid Will Just Miss Earth. Scientists Are Worried There Could Still Be Major Consequences

In April 2029, a rare visitor is going to swing through near-Earth space.

Asteroid 99942 Apophis – a chunk of space rock around 370 meters (1,210 feet) long – is going to sail past within hailing distance, less than 32,000 kilometers (20,000 miles) from Earth.

Scientists have crunched, and re-crunched, and crunched the numbers again for good measure, and they're as certain as they can be that Apophis poses no imminent threat to the inhabitants of Earth.

But do the inhabitants of Earth pose a threat to Apophis? Well, the answer to that question is a surprising maybe, according to a paper published in The Planetary Science Journal.

Asteroid Apophis, named for the Egyptian god of chaos, will pass closer to Earth on 13 April 2029 than many weather satellites do — roughly 32,000 kilometres from the surface — and up to 90% of the world's population may see it with the naked eye

For the first time, humanity will watch a mountain-sized asteroid sail closer than our weather satellites, close enough that nearly half the world might witness it without instruments.

On the evening of 13 April 2029, a point of light may appear among the stars and move quickly enough for anyone watching carefully to see that it does not belong there.

It will not be a satellite. It will not be a meteor burning in the atmosphere. It will be asteroid 99942 Apophis, a stony object with a mean diameter of about 340 metres, passing roughly 32,000 kilometres above Earth’s surface.

That is inside the altitude used by geostationary weather and communications satellites. It is less than one tenth of the average distance to the Moon. For an asteroid of this size, it is the closest encounter humanity has ever known about years in advance.

An Asteroid The Size Of The Empire State Building Is Set To Pass Close To Earth

A gigantic asteroid is set to soar past Earth – and, if the conditions are right, it’ll be visible to the naked eye for billions of people around the world.

The asteroid is named Apophis, after the Egyptian god of chaos and destruction, as it was originally thought it might impact Earth in either 2029, 2036, or 2068.

However, scientists have since confirmed that it will safely pass close to our planet – and won’t impact Earth for at least 100 years.

It has a mean diameter of 340 metres, and is at least 450 metres long. To put that into perspective, the Empire State Building is 443 metres tall (including the spire and antenna).

'National tragedy': Experts warn of concerning NAPLAN knowledge gaps

NAPLAN test results for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 show some persistent gaps in students' literacy and numeracy proficiency. (ABC News)

Annual National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test scores have been released after 1.2 million students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat the test in March.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) said the results showed a slight improvement in numeracy scores in years 5, 7 and 9.

Individual students should have already received their scores, with school results to be released toward the end of the year.

One-third of Australian students are not meeting "challenging but reasonable" expectations in literacy and numeracy in what experts are warning is "stagnant" underperformance.

Reading and writing worsens in Australian schools as one in three students fail to meet Naplan benchmarks

Education minister Jason Clare says the results showed ‘real challenges’ but numeracy scores were heartening

Reading and writing scores are going backwards for almost every age group in Australia’s national standardised school tests, with one in three students still failing to meet Naplan benchmarks.

This year’s tests were taken in March by 1.2 million students across years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to measure literacy and numeracy proficiency, with results released on Wednesday by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (Acara).

Participation was down compared with last year due to industrial action in Tasmania and flooding in the Northern Territory, which has led Acara to not report Tasmanian state-level results as it lagged “far below” the body’s data standards for accurate reporting.

A third of students fail to hit NAPLAN benchmarks

One in three Australian students are failing to meet national numeracy and literacy benchmarks, but NAPLAN data shows Victorian schools are outperforming those in other states.

Nationwide NAPLAN results released on Wednesday show little or no improvement on last year, with large numbers of children still struggling with the basics of learning, despite a federal push to reshape how reading and maths are taught and tested.

The results of tests sat by more than 1.2 million children around the nation in March show nearly 30 per cent were “not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected” or “working towards expectations” in numeracy, reading, writing and spelling. More than 40 per cent of participants did not reach benchmarks in grammar.

'Unfounded and premature': Why experts say parents shouldn't panic about screen time

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Concerns about children and screen use may be overblown, new research suggests, with experts saying worries about an 'iPad baby' generation may be "premature".

A new international study, based on data from over 3,000 children, found no link between screen use duration and developmental difficulties at ages five or 10.

Researchers in the UK spoke with the families of children back in 2009 and 2010 and followed their development for the subsequent 10 years.

Over that time, there has been some criticism and debate about the role of technology in parenting, and whether young people born in the 21st century will be a screen-addicted generation.

New Research Suggests There May Be Two Ages When Screen Time Matters Most

I was scrolling Instagram the other day and another parenting influencer was shaming parents for giving their kids access to screens. They pointed to studies and research proving why this is bad. They’re not wrong. If you’re a parent, you’ve heard a version of the same advice dozens of times: Limit screen time. Easier said than done.

Whether it’s a video that buys you enough time to make dinner, an educational app during a long car ride, or a movie that helps everyone survive a rainy Saturday, screens have become part of modern family life. And while parents often worry they’re somehow “ruining” their kids every time they hand over a tablet, experts say the reality is much more nuanced than that.

A New Study of Screen Time And Child Development Has Some Unexpected Findings

Digital screens are now deeply embedded in our lives, with children getting access to them at earlier and earlier ages – but is this increasing screen time actually affecting their health?

The science is more mixed than you might expect, with some digital device studies raising concerns and others suggesting there's no real relationship between time in front of a screen and mental or physical problems.

In a new paper published in JAMA Network Open, researchers from the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London analyzed data from a cohort of 3,786 children in the Growing Up in Scotland longitudinal research study.
