‘This quarter was otherworldly’: Palantir earnings surge past expectations

Shares soar as yearly revenue up 93%, even as opposition grows to company’s role in Trump immigration agenda

In a sea of companies reporting mixed financial results this quarter, Palantir stands out. Although Palantir was not immune to the AI jitters that caused industry-wide drops in share prices earlier this year, the AI and analytics company reported that its overall revenue grew 93% year over year to $1.94bn. That’s well over the $1.8bn Wall Street expected Palantir to bring in for the second quarter.

The glowing financials sparked a 10% surge in share prices in the immediate aftermath. Despite growing opposition to Palantir’s work with various governments including the crucial role the company plays in the Trump administration’s immigration agenda, the company’s revenue from US government contracts grew 90% year over year to $809m.

Tech giant Palantir posts ‘otherworldly’ growth despite criticism over Gaza

Second-quarter revenue jumped 93 percent but Palantir’s ties to Israel and role in military technology are controversial.

United States artificial intelligence and data analytics giant Palantir Technologies has reported “otherworldly” quarterly results, sending its shares more than 14 percent higher in after-hours trading, as its growth shows no signs of slowing despite mounting criticism over its close ties to the US and Israeli governments and concerns about its growing role in artificial intelligence and warfare.

Palantir Technologies reported a revenue of $1.94bn for the second quarter, up 93 percent from a year earlier, and raised its forecast annual revenue to between $8.15bn and $8.158bn, up from $7.65bn to $7.662bn earlier. It said strong demand from both commercial customers and government agencies drove the surge.

    Palantir’s Stock Paces Best Day In A Year—Here’s Why It’s Up 20%

Palantir’s stock skyrocketed by nearly 30% on Tuesday after reporting “otherworldly” revenue growth through its latest quarter, reversing course for the enterprise software firm, whose shares have plunged so far this year amid broader concerns about the AI market.

Shares of Palantir surged 29.8% as of Tuesday afternoon, pacing the stock’s largest single-day gain since Feb. 6, 2024 (up 30.8%).

Palantir on Monday reported quarterly revenue of $1.9 billion and earnings per share of $0.41, far surpassing estimates of $1.8 billion and $0.34, respectively, according to FactSet.

A 93% year-over-year boost in overall revenue was largely driven by a 149% surge in commercial revenue to $764 million, while government revenue jumped 90% to $809 million.

Michigan Senate Primary Election 2026 Live Results: Stevens, El-Sayed, Rogers and More

With former Rep. Mike Rogers unopposed in the Republican primary, all attention has been on a bruising Democratic primary battle between physician Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens. Stevens has rallied the Washington and Michigan Democratic establishments to her side, while El-Sayed has captured energy and attention from progressive luminaries. The winner will face a sprint to the general election while trying to repair any damage from the long, hard-fought primary.

From my new weekly newsletter, the Data Dive, here's what I'm watching for tonight in Michigan. Hope you'll read and subscribe, and tune in for live results beginning at 7:45 p.m. tonight.

US politics: Can a left-wing Muslim win the midwest? Or are Democrats about to make a big mistake

Ypsilanti, Michigan: Abdul El-Sayed takes the microphone, and the 100-or-so-strong crowd rises to their feet in applause. He leads them in a call-and-response of his election slogans. “Money out of …?” he yells. “Politics,” they respond. “Money in your …? Pocket. Medicare for …? All.”

It is not a glamorous setting. We are in a basement at the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, a small city between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Surrounding us is a collection of old-school firefighting vehicles and a 1913 Ford Model T repainted to look like one.

These are the unassuming rooms in which future leaders are made. In El-Sayed’s case, possibly an important leader. A doctor, unionist and Muslim, he is vying to become the Democratic candidate for the US Senate here in Michigan, a swing state that will decide the outcome of the midterms.

Fact-checking Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens' claims ahead of the Michigan Democratic Senate primary

Michigan Democrats will pick their nominee for the U.S. Senate on Aug. 4 in a battle dominated by views on U.S.-Israel relations and the Democratic Party's future.

The race between Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens has exposed intra-party rifts about whether Democrats should move further to the left in a battleground state Donald Trump won in 2016 and 2024. Criticizing U.S. aid to Israel, as El-Sayed has done, has become increasingly common in the Democratic base, and, in July, nearly half of House Democrats voted to cut off aid. (The vote failed because of Republican opposition.)

White House parodies Nicole Kidman’s iconic AMC ad

As AMC celebrates a historic opening weekend, the White House is parodying the theater company's iconic prescreening promo featuring Nicole Kidman.

On Aug. 3, the official White House social media accounts posted a one-minute-long video parodying AMC's "We Make Movies Better" ad, which features Kidman and is played before a movie begins at the theater chain. Whereas AMC's video promotes the magic of movie theaters, the White House's video, which appears artificial intelligence-generated, promotes the determination of President Donald Trump's administration.

"We come to this place for MAGA, to fight, fight, fight and win, win, win because we need that, all of us," the White House's video begins, featuring a man wearing a Make America Great Again ballcap. In comparison to AMC's, Kidman opens with, "We come to this place for magic. We come to AMC Theatres to laugh, to cry, to care because we need that, all of us."

Donald Trump’s White House Rips Off Nicole Kidman’s AMC Theatres Ad: ‘We Come to This Place for MAGA’

The box office is healing, and AMC Theatres generated its highest revenue in the company’s 106-year history last weekend thanks to “Spider-Man” and “The Odyssey.” So, of course, despite calling Hollywood both “racist” and “terrible,” Donald Trump has inserted himself in this showbiz success story.

On Monday night, the White House posted a parody of Nicole Kidman’s beloved AMC Theatres ad in a video seemingly created with generative AI. Similar to the real commercial, which plays at cinemas before each showtime, the clip opens with a rain puddle showing the reflection of the White House, as a man gazes upon the building’s illuminated columns and reveals a “Make America Great Again” hat.

Joel Cochran sustained a concussion in Friday’s VFL game against Geelong. He has now entered protocols.

Pies offer defender new deal as calls on veterans loom

Veteran defender Jeremy Howe has been offered a new deal by the Magpies

COLLINGWOOD has offered a one-year deal to Jeremy Howe as the Pies work through decisions on their veterans.

Howe underwent surgery on a broken arm in recent days after suffering the injury in last week's loss to Geelong.

However, he remains in the mix to play again this season if the Pies make the wildcard round or extend their campaign into September.

Separately, Collingwood has also made clear it wants the 36-year-old to play on in 2027, with the Pies offering a new deal for the important defender.

Lipinski suffered a calf injury in the loss to Geelong that also featured injuries to his teammates Jeremy Howe and Harry Perryman.

Howe fractured his left forearm against the Cats with a timeline on his return yet unknown, while Perryman suffered a hamstring strain and will miss at least three matches.

Star Magpie Jordan De Goey is in doubt for Sunday's away game against West Coast because of a glute injury.

About 160 Arnott's workers in Adelaide are participating in a 24-hour work stoppage as part of a pay dispute, which the United Workers Union says stems from four years of below inflation wage increases.

The company has offered a pay rise of 9.5 per cent over two years, but the union says most employees have rejected that proposal.

Adelaide workers who make some of Australia's most iconic snacks have walked off the job after previous pay rises equated to less than $1 per hour — not enough to buy a packet of biscuits.

Arnott’s Adelaide Workers Stop Work Over Pay

According to ABC News, about 160 Arnott’s Biscuits employees at the Marleston factory in Adelaide took part in a 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday in a dispute over pay. The United Workers Union said the action involved day and night shift workers and was the first industrial action at the site in more than three decades.

Dozens of workers gathered outside the factory before marching along Marion Road on Tuesday afternoon. Union spokesperson Adam Auld said the Galway Avenue site produces products including Tim Tams, Iced VoVos and other Arnott’s chocolate items.

The union says workers have received wage increases of 2.5 per cent for each of the past four years, which Mr Auld said amounted to less than $1 an hour. He said many employees were struggling with mortgage or rent costs and had to work overtime to make their pay packets stretch. The union is seeking a deal that would put workers ahead of the cost of living.

‘Can’t keep kids safe’: Inherent risks in market-driven childcare

Childcare worker Sherry used to wake up every morning unsure of how to keep the 11 children in her care safe.

“It hurts me as a teacher that you can’t keep the children in your care safe,” she said. “It’s stressful and overwhelming.”

The 30-year-old, who asked not to use her surname to speak openly, said challenging behaviours, a one-to-11 ratio and little support from management made it an impossible job and inherently risky.

A report from Victoria University’s Mitchell Institute found the push to expand childcare had created workforce churn, provider turnover and growing risk.

Since 2013, 40.7 per cent of for-profit centres have changed operators, some as many as five times, the report shows.

Reports of shocking abuse and neglect in our early childhood system mean many Australians are questioning whether they can trust childcare centres.

In our new report, we look at some of the broader factors that can increase risks in the childcare system.

We show how it is common for daycare centres to change owners or providers. The sector also has high staff turnover and relatively low pay. The result means Australia's early childhood sector is very different to other parts of our education system.

Mamdani May Need to Find $5 Billion More a Year for Free Child Care | Mamdani’s universal child…

Explore the latest developments concerning Mamdani May Need.

Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost taxpayers billions more than planned as costs balloon: report

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost 50% more than he advertised, according to a new study.

The proposed program is estimated to cost a whopping $9 billion annually, approximately with an average cost per child roughly $27,000, according to the report from the Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with the New School.

“An estimated $8.7 to $9.3 billion would be needed annually to fund universal child care in New York City,” the report, which was released on Monday, states.

That’s $3 billion more than the mayor previously said his ambitious universal free childcare program would cost.

Introducing a Universal Child Care Cost Model for New York

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul made a commitment to universal child care this year and took initial steps toward this bold objective in the State and City FY2027 budgets. That included piloting new contracted care services, like 2-K in New York City and 0-2 care in three upstate counties; a commitment to universal Pre-K statewide by 2028; and the establishment of a new State Office of Child Care and Early Education.

Nevertheless, questions remain about how much a universal, high-quality, stable system will cost, and who will pay for it.

To that end, the Economic and Fiscal Policy Team at the Center for New York City Affairs developed a universal child care cost model, a dynamic tool that incorporates the latest grounded assumptions and relevant costs for child care programs.
