ASX 200 LIVE: ASX hits intraday record before banks drag lower; Sharon AI wins $500m contract; CBA, banks sell-off

The Australian sharemarket set a record intraday high on Wednesday afternoon, as hopes for an imminent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz overpowered a sell-off in bank and energy stocks.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index was up 72.6 points or 0.8 per cent, to 9218.4 on near 3pm AEST on Wednesday afternoon. Five of the 11 sectors were lower, led by the banks and energy stocks.

Wall Street rallied overnight, sending the S&P 500 and Dow Jones to record closes on news of another interim peace deal between the US and Iran to end the war, which is now in its sixth month. A robust quarterly earnings season is also helping.

Space X is making headlines this morning with its first earnings report since the tech titan went public in June. So what to make of its astronomical revenue growth? And what is still pulling its share price back to earth?

Meanwhile hundreds of ASX-listed companies are getting ready to report over the coming weeks and analysts are concerned about an earnings momentum slow-down. Could profits even be going backwards for many big companies?

John Longmire opens up on booing during player’s final years

‘I should have threatened to pull our players off the ground’

Former Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has opened up on his regret for not doing more to support Adam Goodes in the final years of his career, as the two-time Brownlow medallist faced “diabolical, almost unforgivable” treatment.

Writing in his autobiography released this week, Longmire said the final years of Goodes’s career were a source of regret.

“I wish everyone had done more,” he said. “Adam Goodes was not just a champion footballer, he was a leader and a man of immense courage. What he endured was diabolical, almost unforgivable.”

‘Extreme act’ Swans coach regrets not doing amid Goodes booing

Former Sydney coach John Longmire regrets not doing more to support champion player Adam Goodes during the final years of his career where the dual Brownlow Medallist was booed relentlessly by fans around the country.

The 2012 premiership coach, in his autobiography: “Pain, Perspective and Premierships – My Autobiography”, went as far as saying the club should have staged a walk off during a game to send the message that they would no longer stand for what was happening.

Goodes, one of the game’s all-time greats, has barely been seen in the AFL world since retiring in 2015, largely due to the confronting nature of his final years in the sport.

Corruption probe into Andrews-era firefighters negotiations handed down

The Independent Broad-Based Anti-Corruption Commission investigated allegations of corruption dating back to Daniel Andrews's first term as premier. (ABC News)

A long-running IBAC investigation has found United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall exerted extraordinary influence in pay negotiations with the Andrews government.

The report stopped short of making any findings of corrupt conduct, instead warning such behaviour raised the risk of corruption.

Mr Marshall accused IBAC of wasting public money and said its surveillance methods were extreme.

Victoria's anti-corruption watchdog has found Andrews government ministers, MPs and public servants engaged in "serious and concerning conduct" during a bitter pay dispute with the state's firefighters union.

Five things to know about Operation Richmond

On Wednesday morning, Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) handed down its report into Operation Richmond – an eight-year investigation into dealings between the state government under former premier Daniel Andrews and the United Firefighters Union boss, Peter Marshall.

IBAC found that Victorian Labor ministers, MPs and public servants engaged in what it called “serious and concerning conduct”. It did not, however, find that there had been corrupt conduct.

IBAC identified serious problems in how the Andrews government struck pay deals with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), alongside the creation of Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV).

Senior members of the former Daniel Andrews government engaged in “serious and concerning” conduct in their dealings with the firefighters’ union leader, Peter Marshall, a long-awaited report by the Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog has found.

The report by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission was tabled in parliament on Wednesday, eight years after their investigation first began.

While it did not find that any individuals engaged in corrupt conduct, the report said senior members of the Andrews government engaged in “serious and concerning” conduct in their dealings with Marshall – the secretary of the United Firefighter Union (UFU) – when negotiating pay deals for the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), and their later amalgamation into Fire Services Victoria (FSV).

Jetstar will charge passengers for overhead baggage from February next year. (ABC News: Keana Naughton)

Travellers taking more than a laptop, handbag or backpack on Jetstar flights will have to pay extra for carry-on baggage from February next year.

The budget airline has announced it will charge for cabin luggage in overhead lockers, allowing only a small under-seat bag at no extra cost.

Jetstar has announced it will charge passengers to stow carry-on luggage in overhead lockers from next year, allowing only a small under-seat bag at no extra cost.

The budget airline is set to scrap its free 7-kilogram carry-on allowance from February 2027 in a move it says is in line with other low-fare carriers globally.

Charging passengers for overhead baggage could backfire on Jetstar, with the low-cost carrier accused of a cash grab.

From February 2, Jetstar will lift its 7kg carry-on weight limit in favour of a size-based carry-on baggage model adopted by several European low-cost carriers such as Ryan Air.

Passengers will be able to bring one small, under-the-seat bag up to 10kg, but anything larger than a backpack, handbag or laptop bag will incur a charge.

Jetsar: Mixed reactions in Australia as airline introduces fees for overhead carry-on luggage

Australians have responded with a mixture of outrage and support after budget airline Jetstar announced it would start charging for the use of overhead lockers.

From February the airline is scrapping its 7kg (15.4lb) limit on hand luggage. Instead all passengers will be allowed a smaller bag that can fit under the seat in front and the option to pay for space for a larger bag in the overhead locker and priority boarding.

The move comes after "extensive research and feedback" and is similar to the policies of other low cost airlines, Jetstar said.

It was met with a mixed response by social media users, with some asking whether the airline would also start charging customers to use the toilet.

Bottle shop and pubs owner Endeavour has flagged a sharp decline in annual profit as chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka’s long-term plan to turn around the struggling company inflicts short-term pain from a jump in writedowns and restructuring costs.

The nation’s largest liquor store operator, which owns the Dan Murphy’s and BWS chains, expects to report net profit of around $52 million for the year to June 28, down from $426 million in the prior year, after disclosing a bigger-than-expected $331 million charge for significant items.

Kilometer-high Saudi tower inches closer to world's tallest record

The JEC Tower has hit another milestone on its journey to become the new world's tallest skyscraper. The building is rapidly moving toward the halfway mark and has reached a height of 430 m (1,410 ft), with around 570 m (1,870 ft) left to go until the record-breaking megatall is completed.

Located in the port city of Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, the JEC Tower (which also goes by Jeddah Economic Company Tower or Jeddah Tower) is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, the former responsible for the design of the current world's tallest building, the 828-m (2,717-ft) Burj Khalifa. Once finished, this latest supertall will include at least 157 floors and will be almost twice the height of the tallest building in the USA, the 541-m (1,776-ft) One World Trade Center.

Tower set to redefine global skyline passes 430m mark on path to becoming world's tallest building

Despite building work starting over 13 years ago amid financial and contractor issues, construction has finally resumed on Jeddah Tower — the structure which is set to become the world's tallest building with a planned finished height of over 1,000 meters.

The Burj Khalifa has long-held the title of the world's tallest building since construction finished in 2009, standing at a staggering 828 meters and overtaking Taipei 101 for the title with a lead of over 300 meters in the end.

A similar smashing of the record could soon be achieved by Jeddah Tower, however, as it nears its estimated completion date of August 2028 with progress finally resuming.

Of the families recorded by Brisbane Zero, 321 identified as being homeless for the first time. (ABC News: Patrick Rocca)

New data from Brisbane Zero shows last financial year there were 984 families, including 1,539 children, who were identified by name as experiencing homelessness in the city.
