Geologists reveal the world’s largest iron deposit worth $6 trillion that could reshape the global economy

A colossal iron ore deposit buried deep beneath Western Australia has stunned scientists — with far-reaching consequences for global markets, industrial balance, and our understanding of Earth’s geology itself.

In one of the most significant geological discoveries in decades, researchers have identified a deposit in the remote Hamersley region that could rewrite both mining economics and Earth’s ancient history. Already renowned for its mineral wealth, Hamersley is now home to what experts describe as the largest iron ore formation ever found — an estimated 55 billion metric tons of ore with iron content exceeding 60%.

Valued at roughly $6 trillion, this discovery could shift global trade dynamics and even challenge existing theories about how mineral-rich layers formed deep in Earth’s crust.

BHP Stock Today: January 26 Pilbara $6T Iron Find Reshapes Outlook

BHP stock is in focus after reports of a vast, high‑grade Pilbara iron ore endowment that could shape long‑term supply. We examine what this means for BHP stock on 26 January 2026, including price action, valuation, and risks. Shares last closed at A$64.97, near the year high of A$67.56. With iron ore prices central to earnings, we outline scenarios for Pilbara iron ore and how China demand, capex, and approvals may shift the outlook ahead of results on 16 Feb 2026.

A new analysis highlights ~55 billion tonnes of >60% Fe ore across WA’s Hamersley/Pilbara, valued near $6 trillion at current prices. That scale could extend Australia’s supply leadership and attract fresh capital over time. While resource definition and timelines remain uncertain, the headline figure underpins long‑duration optionality for majors. See coverage from Futura Sciences.

When one talks about the Pilbara’s mineral wealth, one typically thinks of iron ore, with the red dirt in WA’s north accounting for more than half of our $230 billion resources export industry.

But dig deeper and it’s not the only mineral the Pilbara hides between its auburn soil.

The giant mineral province is also known to host rich deposits of gold, lithium and copper.

De Grey Mining’s landmark 11.2Moz Hemi gold discovery played a key role in shifting the market’s expectations. The intrusion-hosted deposit now owned by Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) parked off a mini rush to find similar deposits in the region in 2020.

Australian Open 2026: Iva Jovic & Victoria Mboko – doubles partners leading teen disruptors

Iva Jovic (left) and Victoria Mboko will meet in the quarter-finals if they win their fourth-round ties

If the men's draw at the Australian Open has belonged to the veterans, the women's has been a celebration of youth – with teenagers Victoria Mboko and Iva Jovic reaching the second week of a major for the first time in their fledgling careers.

After dropping just 12 games across her previous two matches, 17th seed Mboko came through a tight three-set encounter with Danish 14th seed Clara Tauson. The 19-year-old's reward is a date with world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the last 16.

Teenagers stun at Aus Open as World No.1 pushed and divisive star bundled out

Teenagers Iva Jovic and Victoria Mboko are the talk of the tennis world after Mboko produced an 'incredible' fight against Aryna Sabalenka and Jovic sent Yulia Putintseva packing from the Australian Open on Sunday. The 18-year-old Jovic destroyed Putintseva with a 6-0 6-1 thrashing, sending the divisive star home in just 53 minutes.

It came after Putintseva divided opinion with her response to what she described as 'disrespectful' treatment from fans in her previous win over Zeynep Sönmez. The Kazakh player danced in front of vocal Turkish fans – who then booed her relentlessly during an on-court interview – after Putintseva said they'd been trying to put her off throughout the match.

Even Gen Z wants to keep Australia Day date: poll

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Record numbers of Australians want to keep Australia Day on January 26. After a summer marked by anger and division following the Bondi killings, seven out of 10 people reject the call to change the date.

Support for January 26 has climbed steadily in the past three years in exclusive polls for this masthead conducted by Resolve Political Monitor. Only 47 per cent backed the date in January 2023, but 56 per cent supported it in January 2024, shortly after the failed Voice to parliament referendum.

Now, 68 per cent back the current national day despite the objections of Indigenous Australians to celebrating the nation on the day the first fleet arrived and colonisation began.

Opposition to moving Australia Day from January 26 is hardening: new research

David Lowe receives funding from the Australian Research Council and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Deakin University provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

Australians are deeply divided over whether January 26 is an appropriate day to celebrate Australia Day – and we are no longer debating it as much as doubling down in entrenched camps.

Over the past five years, we have tracked attitudes on whether Australia Day should continue to be celebrated on January 26 through the Deakin Contemporary History Survey.

The most striking result from our late 2025 wave is not a shift in overall opinion, but a hardening of opposition to changing the date. While the balance between those who support and those who oppose change has remained stable, fewer Australians are sitting in the middle. This means more are expressing strong disagreement with changing the date of Australia Day.

BREAKING: Patriots into Super Bowl as big gamble backfires, Aussie ‘MVP’ stars in defeat

But less than five years after the legendary quarterback announced he would be leaving Foxborough, the Patriots are back in the Super Bowl yet again. They have a long-term answer at quarterback too.

Drake Maye was far from his best, but came up with big plays when it mattered most – including a few key gains with his legs – to help the Patriots to a 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos in snowy conditions.

AFC championship: Patriots robbed of defensive TD off Jarrett Stidham turnover, then Drake Maye scores one anyway

An officiating mistake cost the New England Patriots a defensive touchdown against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

But Drake Maye deemed the error moot by running for a touchdown two plays later to get the Patriots on the scoreboard and cap a pivotal sequence in the AFC championship game.

The sequence started late in the second quarter as the Broncos held a 7-0 lead. Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who was playing for injured starter Bo Nix, faced pressure on third-and-3 and carelessly released the ball near Denver's 14-yard line.

Patriots linebacker Elijah Ponder picked the ball up and ran into the end zone for what looked like a New England touchdown. But officials blew the whistle as Ponder picked up the ball, killing the play.

Gene Steratore flip-flops on controversial Jarrett Stidham fumble call

Late in the second quarter of Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, a forward-pass controversy left the CBS broadcast crew confused and unable to give a clear explanation to fans watching at home.

Facing a third down with 3:09 left in the second quarter, Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham found himself in trouble and attempted to throw the ball away under duress, leading to a sequence that left everyone watching, including the officials on the field and the broadcasters in CBS’s booth, completely flummoxed.

Jim Nantz, Tony Romo, and Gene Steratore stumble through that clusterf–k of a sequence on the field.

Meet Veronika, the first cow known to engage in flexible, multipurpose tool use

A tool-using cow is challenging what we know about farm animal intelligence

A pet cow named Veronika uses a tool in a surprisingly sophisticated way—possibly because she has been allowed to live her best life

In news that is sure to delight fans of a certain Gary Larson cartoon turned meme about the limitations of bovine cognition, cow tools are real.

Larson’s 1982 comic for his series The Far Side showed a cow standing behind a table bearing an array of oddly shaped objects. The text below the image read simply “cow tools.” Now a pet cow named Veronika has been documented not only using a tool but doing so in a surprisingly sophisticated way. The finding adds a new species to the growing list of creatures that have been found to use external objects to achieve a goal and suggests that society has been underestimating the minds of farm animals.

Watch Veronika the brown cow pick up a rake to scratch herself—a scientific first

Veronika the cow has learned to scratch herself with deck brushes and other tools. Scientists took note.

Veronika, a cow living in an idyllic mountain village in the Austrian countryside, has spent years perfecting the art of scratching herself with sticks, rakes, and deck brushes. Now that scientists have discovered her, she has the distinction of the first cow known to use tools.

She picks up objects with her tongue, grips them tight with her mouth, and directs their ends to where she wants them most. When she’s wielding a deck brush, she will use the bristled end to scratch her thick-skinned back, but switches to the smooth handle when scratching her soft, sensitive belly.

Anti-immigration protesters and annual Invasion Day rally-goers are set to converge on Melbourne’s CBD on Monday, and police will don extra protective gear after protests in October turned violent.

The Invasion Day rally will start at 11am outside Parliament House. Previous such protests have moved through the CBD and ended up outside Flinders Street Station. The opposing March for Australia is to start outside Flinders Street Station at noon.

March for Australia rallies are typically anti-immigration, however Monday’s event appears to focus more on Australia Day and keeping the public holiday on January 26, directly opposing the Invasion Day rally’s push to mark the day on a different date.

Near record streak of dry January days in Seattle

SEATTLE — January is typically a soaker in western Washington, but lately, you’d be hard-pressed to find any rain at all.

Sunday marks the 13th day in a row with no measurable rain in our area.

RELATED | Cascade snowpack lagging at 50% of normal as unusual warm weather stretches on

And this is not something we want to see when we should be loading up our snowpack in the mountains and keeping the raingear handy in the lowlands.

Right now, we are on track to set a new record for consecutive January days with no rain.

The old record is 15 days in a row with no rain, set back in 1963.

You would have to go back to 1963 to find this kind of dry pattern in western Washington. That’s when Seattle set a record of 15 straight days in January without rain.

We are not quite there yet, but Friday is Day 11 with no measurable precipitation.

“We’ve just been under a pattern that’s really deflected any of these weather systems away from us,” Jacob DeFlitch, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Seattle, said.

The dry streak is expected to continue at least through the weekend. Forecast models show a possible weak system arriving Monday, but meteorologists say it is unlikely to bring much, if any, rainfall.
