A massive winter storm has brought snow, sleet and freezing rain to much of the US.

Several people have died in New York and Louisiana, while hundreds of thousands of people in the south-east have been without power, with Tennessee and Mississippi hit especially hard.

The ice and snowfall are expected to continue, followed by very low temperatures that could cause "dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts" for days, the US National Weather Service has said.

At least two people died of hypothermia in Louisiana, and other deaths linked to the storm have been reported in Texas, Tennessee and Kansas.

As of Sunday afternoon, more than 800,000 households had lost power, according to poweroutage.us. Meanwhile, more than 11,000 flights were cancelled, FlightAware reported.
