    Australia have had the last laugh in netball’s Constellation Cup, convincingly thumping New Zealand 68-58 in their fortress of Melbourne.

    The result marks the Silver Ferns’ first loss of 2026 and ends their run of 11 consecutive test wins. New Zealand win the series 3-1, but fall short of sweeping Australia for the first time.

    Kiwi shooter Grace Nweke won the inaugural Norma-Plummer Medal for player of the series. Nweke notched up 42/45 from 54 minutes in game four.

    Diminutive goal attack Georgie Horjus starred for the hosts, slotting 26 goals at 92.9%, most of them from range. Goal keep Jessie Grenvold was outstanding for her four gains, while skipper Liz Watson had 50 feeds and Amy Permenter was a constant threat in the midcourt. Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich looks to have settled on her top line-up, making no substitutions.

    Australia's rising road toll reverses hard-won safety improvements

    The number of fatal crashes caused by drink-driving has reduced, with drugs now a more common contributing factor.  (ABC News: Sarah Richards)

    Australia is on track to record the highest number of road deaths in 15 years, despite a national target to halve fatalities by 2030.

    The road toll has increased since 2020, reversing a decades-long trend towards safer roads.

    After decades of a declining death toll, the number of people being killed on Australian roads is once again rising.

    "Something is changing, and not for the better," said Australian Automobile Association managing director Michael Bradley.

    "Cars have never been safer, we're spending a huge amount of money on roads, yet more people are dying.

    SA records largest increase in road deaths in Australia

    South Australia’s road deaths have already passed the target set for the whole year, with RAA’s latest crash report counting 84 lives lost in 2026.

    South Australia has recorded the largest increase in road deaths of any Australian state over the past 12 months, with new figures revealing 88 lives have been lost on SA roads so far in 2026.

    RAA’s latest quarterly crash report has revealed the state has already exceeded its annual road safety targets, with 84 fatalities and 681 serious injuries recorded between January and September.

    Under South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy, the state is aiming to reduce annual fatalities to no more than 70 and serious injuries to 591. Both targets were surpassed before the end of September, with more than three months of the year remaining at that point.

    National Road Safety Strategy Review exposes major failings

    The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has called for a coordinated national response, warning that the country's approach to reducing road trauma is failing to deliver the improvements needed to meet its 2030 targets.

    The National Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030 aims to halve road deaths and reduce serious injuries by 30 per cent by the end of the decade.

    However, the latest AAA figures show 1,334 people died on Australian roads during the 12 months to September 30, 2026, representing a 0.2 per cent increase over the previous corresponding period.

    The national road toll is now 21.6 per cent higher than when the strategy commenced in January 2021.

    AAA managing director Michael Bradley said the review highlighted the need for fundamental changes to Australia's road safety management.

    Steve Smith has been dramatically ruled out of the series-deciding third Test against South Africa with Josh Inglis among four inclusions to Australia's XI in Cape Town.

    Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first on a sunny morning at Newlands with the upheaval in the Australian XI marking the most changes they have made mid-series since their 2018 tour of South Africa.

    The morning's theatre played out around an hour before the toss when Smith failed a last-minute fitness test on his troublesome neck.

    Australia have avoided adding another chapter to their history of Cape Town disasters, with Mitchell Starc’s six wickets having South Africa all out for 329 at the end of the first day.

    On a chaotic morning at Newlands, Steve Smith first ruled himself out of the series decider with a neck injury before Pat Cummins sent the Proteas in on a straw-coloured pitch under largely blue skies.

    South Africa then reached 0-158 with Cummins’ decision heavily criticised, before Starc’s haul led a fightback and the Proteas at one stage lost 5-29 mid-innings.

    Australia give Steve Smith chance to prove fitness ahead of South Africa series decider

    Batter aiming for Newlands return after injuring neck in second Test

    Australia will give key batter Steve Smith as much time as possible to ⁠prove his fitness ahead of the third and final Test against South Africa at Newlands, captain Pat Cummins said.

    Smith ⁠injured his neck in ⁠South Africa’s ​innings and 31-run victory in the second Test in Gqeberha which levelled the series at 1-1 going into the decider in ⁠Cape Town starting on Tuesday.

    “Hopefully, it all goes well and he’ll be there,” Cummins said. “But we just want to wait for ⁠that last piece of the puzzle [before naming a team].”

    Australia retain Rose Bowl with 40-run T20 win over New Zealand

    Australia have retained the Rose Bowl with a comfortable 40-run victory in the Twenty20 International against New Zealand at North Sydney Oval.

    Led by a blazing 84 from vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner, Australia scored a competitive 167-7 and held New Zealand to 8-127 on Tuesday night, claiming a 2-0 lead in the three-match series with the remaining game on Thursday.

    Australia have held the Rose Bowl for more than 26 years, and the trophy is on the line again in March for a three-match one-day series. This will be the first time it has been contested twice in the same season.

    Gardner dominated an otherwise stuttering Australian batting performance, facing just 45 balls and hitting 10 fours and four sixes on the compact North Sydney Oval.

    Scott Boland's latest heroics and Matt Renshaw's superb reflexes have put Australia in command of the second Test, as South Africa slumped to 5-97 after day two.

    After taking two wickets on a rain-marred opening day of the second Test, Boland finished another wet Monday with figures of 4-31 at St George's Park.

    But the stand-out moment of the shortened day came in the dying overs, when Renshaw somehow latched on to a Ryan Rickelton edge to his right at first slip.
