OpenAI says dozens of third parties have been affected by autonomous agents bypassing security controls or otherwise negatively impacting their systems.

New evidence shows its agents spent days trying different tactics to access Australian health data, though the separate incidents have not been formally linked.

OpenAI is conducting a months-long review of incidents and will continue to notify affected organisations on a rolling basis.

Rogue artificial intelligence agents spent almost a week trying to access Australian health data as OpenAI reveals "dozens" more breaches globally.

OpenAI says its bots broke into other governments’ websites

Australian senators are demanding OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman appear before a parliamentary inquiry into artificial intelligence as the tech giant reveals its rogue agents have hacked dozens more organisations around the globe.

OpenAI confirmed on Friday (US time) its bots had infiltrated United States government websites and leaked more than 50 ChatGPT user photos just days after Anthony Albanese revealed to the world the company had hacked Medicare.

The prime minister on Saturday pointed to the broadening security breaches as more evidence humans risked losing control of the technology without a co-ordinated international response, while insisting the AI rollout was inevitable and Australia must get on board.

OpenAI says agents leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users in latest example of rogue activity

Disclosure reveals new area of privacy risk for the company and illustrates how difficult it is to inventory unauthorized activity tied to its agents

Two months after OpenAI disclosed the accidental hacking of Hugging Face, the ChatGPT maker is still working to understand the full scope of its rogue agent activity, two people briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The latest example came on Friday when OpenAI said its agents had leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users. OpenAI declined to say if the images were AI-generated or identified real people. It also declined to say when the images were posted.

Also on Friday, OpenAI confirmed its agents had accessed US government websites, including those of the Security and Exchange Commission and the commerce department, accessing US Census data from the latter. The company was also investigating an attempted breach of the education department’s website, as reported by the New York Times.

Australia is becoming a second-rate country again

Bigger government, higher taxes, more expensive energy, more regulated workplaces and closing off natural growth options will make Australia second-rate again.

Critics of this week’s Intergenerational Report queried its assumption that artificial intelligence would rescue Australia from its decade-long productivity drought.

But even this hopeful assumption would leave a sub-par future that Treasury and the government of the day seem satisfied to bequeath to the next generation.

It is difficult enough to predict what will happen next month, let alone 40 years from now.

Regardless, for the past quarter of a century, Australian governments have sought to project where the nation is heading and predict the challenges and opportunities that may present themselves every five or so years.

They're rarely correct. But that's hardly the point. In many ways, it is just as instructive to figure out why previous forecasts missed the mark, delivering valuable insights into how best to approach the future.

This latest report, the seventh since 2002, has arrived at a seminal moment in history.

James leads Australia’s ‘Cash is King’ movement. He says a big change is coming

Exclusive: A surge of Australians could find themselves queueing up at the ATM to withdraw cash after a significant payments reform.

The Reserve Bank’s looming card surcharge ban is tipped to arrive with an unexpected side effect: a revival of banknotes.

The Cash is King leader said he expects more signs offering discounts or asking for cash-only after October 1. Cash is King

From October 1, businesses will be legally prohibited from charging fees for credit card and bank card sales in a move that is expected to save customers an estimated $1.6 billion.

It is widely anticipated that businesses will raise prices instead of wearing the cost themselves.

Card surcharges are banned from October 1. What’s changing at the checkout?

From October 1 this year, businesses will be banned from adding a surcharge when customers pay with a debit, credit, EFTPOS or prepaid card.

The Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association has said it “will be one of the largest changes in payments” in Australia’s history – and many small businesses “are unprepared for its arrival”.

The change follows a lengthy Reserve Bank of Australia review and decision to remove surcharging from all designated card networks (EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa). American Express is voluntarily joining the change.

When the Reserve Bank first effectively allowed card surcharges in 2003, Australians mostly paid in cash. Cash still accounted for 69% of payments in 2007, when the central bank first began tracking payment methods usage. Back then, debit and credit cards were used for only one in four payments.

Surcharge ban, NDIS, aged care, auction rules: All the changes coming for Aussies in October

There are a raft of changes being introduced next month by both federal and state authorities. From credit card surcharge bans to NDIS and aged care support, these will affect Australians all over the country.

Many banks and businesses have already started introducing changes for their customers, while others won't commence until next Thursday, October 1. While most will take place nationwide, some are only relevant to particular states.

Warning as cash only signs appear ahead of new ban next week

From next Thursday, consumers will no longer face surcharges when making a card payment.

When paying at a merchant, the surcharges for EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa will no longer be able to be passed on at the point of purchase, which the RBA says currently cost consumers $1.2 billion each year.

South Africa v Australia: first men’s cricket one-day international – live

40th over: South Africa 208-5 (Breetzke 84, Jansen 31) Jansen gives himself some room to punch a square drive off Edwards to the rope. The debutant responds with a slower ball that slips out of his hands and down the legside. Edwards limits the damage from there with the South Africans picking up three singles from there.

39th over: South Africa 200-5 (Breetzke 83, Jansen 25) SIX! Jansen is done with hanging around as he picks up the flight from Zampa, takes one step down the pitch and sends the ball sailing over the long-on fence. The towering all-rounder does much the same again as he gets down on one knee and slog sweeps the leg-spinner into the crowd at deep midwicket. That brings up the 200 for South Africa just as they were getting bogged down.

When the Proteas stunned Australia on return

South Africa announced their return to cricket’s biggest stage with a nine-wicket demolition of Australia in their first meeting after isolation.

On 26 February 1992, the Proteas walked out at the Sydney Cricket Ground for their first-ever World Cup match.

Their opponents were defending champions Australia, but South Africa hardly looked like a side finding their feet after years away from international cricket.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat, but the Proteas immediately put them under pressure.

Allan Donald led the attack with 3-34 from his 10 overs, while Brian McMillan took 2-35 and Adrian Kuiper returned an excellent 2-15 from five overs. Richard Snell went wicketless but conceded just 15 runs from nine overs.

Oil prices lower as Iran open to diplomatic end to war

Jobs numbers ‘final nail in the coffin’ for RBA rate rise

The Australian sharemarket is lower after unemployment rose, in line with losses in New York as oil surged back above $US100 a barrel and bond yields spiked higher.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 73 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 8692.70 at 2.15pm on Thursday. Two of the 11 sectors were in the green, led by energy.

New data published on Thursday showed the unemployment rate in Australia rose to 4.6 per cent in August despite the economy adding 39,500 jobs.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.8 per cent, and the Nasdaq dropped 1.1 per cent overnight, retreating from recent highs as the yield on US 10-year bonds leapt to 5.11 per cent.

Unemployment rises to 4.6%, but a September interest rate hike still looks likely

Unemployment rose to 4.6% in August, new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show. That’s the highest it’s been since November 2021.

Since the start of this year, Australia’s unemployment rate has increased by 0.5 percentage points, up from 4.1% last December.

However, that upward trend appears unlikely to dissuade the Reserve Bank board from lifting interest rates next week, given the central bank’s recent stern warnings about fighting inflation.

On Tuesday, Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock warned that unemployment may need to rise further to help rein in inflation:

I think [an unemployment rate] between 4.5% and 5% will probably take enough heat out of the labour market that it’ll ease pressure on inflation.

Surprise unemployment jump ahead of RBA’s looming rates call

The unemployment rate has unexpectedly risen after 6000 people lost their full-time jobs in August, but it’s unlikely to spare Australians from another rate hike next week.

New data released on Thursday morning by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the jobless rate rose to 4.6 per cent for last month, up from 4.5 per cent in July.

The jump in unemployment will factor into the RBA’s next interest rate decision, to be handed down on Tuesday. Peter Rae

It is the highest unemployment level recorded in Australia since the end of the pandemic.

Economists had expected the figure to remain steady at 4.5 per cent.

Australia confirms F-35 fighter jet parts were mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong

Australia’s defense minister said Tuesday that F-35 fighter jet parts had been mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong, following reports US lawmakers were investigating the mishap amid concerns about the possibility of China getting access to sensitive US military technology.

“We’ve been made aware of this, and we’re obviously working with the United States and Lockheed in terms of how we can assist in this investigation,” Defense Minister Richard Marles told reporters in Adelaide.

Politico first reported last week that the F-35 parts shipment bound for the United States for repairs were rerouted in transit from Australia this summer, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Classified Australian F-35 parts disappear in Hong Kong

First reported in Politico and later confirmed by the Pentagon, the shipment of components from Australia was bound for the United States for repairs before it was rerouted to Hong Kong and disappeared.

The shipment reportedly included an F-35 canopy, which is covered in a sensitive radar-absorbent material that degrades over time and requires subsequent repair or replacement. The nature of prior generations of radar-resistant canopy materials, such as gold used on the F-16 fighter jets from the late 1980s, were classified.

Australia does not possess a facility capable of repairing the canopies for the RAAF’s fleet of 72 F-35 fighters.

More US soldiers have died in Iran than Pentagon has reported

Saudi Arabian authorities issued air-raid alerts for Riyadh early Saturday, the first in the capital since the height of the US-Iran war in March and April.

The kingdom’s early warning system issued emergency alerts at 4am (11am AEST) and again at 6am for residents of the capital, without giving further details. The Saudi civil defence said the danger had lifted soon after in both cases.

Other areas across Saudi Arabia received similar warnings overnight, including the Red Sea cities of Jeddah and Yanbu and Farasan Island in the Red Sea.

Chalmers’ $500b debt turnaround relies on ‘unrealistic’ forecasts

Claims in the upcoming Intergenerational Report that Australia is on track for a $500 billion improvement in the federal government’s long-term debt outlook hinge on an overly optimistic assumption about the nation’s productivity potential, economists say.

They say the report, to be released on Monday, would instead have revealed a deterioration in the federal government’s debt position over the next 40 years had Treasury used a more realistic forecast for productivity growth than its current assumption of 1.2 per cent.

Chalmers wipes more than $500b off nation’s debt – in four decades’ time

Hundreds of billions of debt that would weigh on future taxpayers is likely to be avoided, a long-term forecast on the state of the federal budget will reveal, even as the government faces growing spending pressures and a blowout in the nation’s interest bill.

The seventh release of the intergenerational report, to be released by Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Monday, will show gross government debt far lower than expected and deep spending cuts in this year’s budget improving the budget bottom line into the 2060s.

Yet the immediate pressure on the budget is growing with another step-up in the interest rate on Australian government debt amid a global repricing of public debt exposing fiscal problems in the United States.
