Yesterday Andrew Bragg announced he would strip the 2,000 page national housing code down to just 80 pages, removing most standards outside health, fire safety and essential structural requirements.

The New South Wales and federal governments have agreed to spend $2.5 billion dollars over 10 years to secure the future of Australia's largest aluminium smelter, Tomago Aluminium.

The smelter's owner, Rio Tinto, threatened closure from 2029 amid the rising cost of renewable and coal-fired power.

The prime minister and NSW premier are expected to visit the smelter in the NSW Hunter region on Thursday morning.

A bailout of the country's largest aluminium smelter will cost taxpayers $2.5 billion dollars, with the New South Wales and federal governments expected to split the bill down the middle.

Labor announces $2.5b bailout for Tomago aluminium smelter

The Tomago aluminium smelter will get a $2.5 billion, 10-year bailout paid for by federal and NSW taxpayers in a deal that will also involve a $1.1 billion facility upgrade by Rio Tinto.

Tomago employs about 1000 people and accounts for 12 per cent of NSW’s electricity demand. In December, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would keep the smelter operating beyond the expiry of its current electricity supply contracts on December 31, 2028.

Two airport workers have been stood down and the chief of Australia’s air traffic control agency summoned for a meeting with the federal transport minister as investigators probe the second near-collision between two planes at Sydney Airport in the past two weeks.

Both the air traffic controller and the ground crew worker involved in the Sunday incident have been stood down under their employers’ policies while authorities determine how a Jetstar plane got within metres of striking a Qatar jet.

The airport has suffered days of delays triggered by Airservices Australia, a government owned corporation that operates air traffic control towers around the country and has faced workforce shortages.

PERTH. La domanda è inevitabile: perché Milan e Inter (poi la Juventus oltre al Palermo) si prendono la briga di effettuare due amichevoli quasi agli antipodi dell’Italia? In Australia Occidentale, nello specifico. Cioè a 18-19 ore di volo di distanza dai rispettivi quartier generali. In una città, Perth, che parte dei loro tifosi farebbe (per ora: attenzione, per ora) probabilmente fatica a collocare esattamente su una cartina.

La risposta non è banale. Travalica uno scontato «questione di soldi». Ché del resto il gettone presenza sarebbe stato corposo anche ad altre latitudini. Dry July for Western Australia as stunning pictures tell story

Despite a wet start to winter, July has been one of the driest on record for large parts of Western Australia.

A lack of consecutive cold fronts and strong storm systems left rainfall totals across Perth and the southern half well below what would normally be expected for one of the state's wettest months.

The city gauge only managed to record 56.8 millimetres of rain this month, less than half of its long-term July average of 147 mm.

Across the broader South West region, average rainfall was about 39.7 mm for the month — the lowest since records began.

Last sunny day in Perth before rain and thunderstorms hit

Residents in Perth should enjoy the sunny start to the week, before a wet front brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to parts of the state.

After a sunny start to Sunday, the dry weather is set to continue into Monday with showers developing late in the evening on Monday.

Metrologists at the Bureau of Meteorology forecast a high chance of showers overnight into Tuesday, hitting the metro area with up to 15mm of rain, and a chance of a thunderstorm first thing.

The wet weather is set to ease up slightly by Wednesday, with any rainfall set to stop by the afternoon.

Australia air safety: Engineer sacked after rebooting Singapore Airlines plane, causing 17-minute delay

An aircraft maintenance worker who powered down a plane to clear errors before take-off has failed to win back his job after causing a 17-minute delay, with the country’s fair work umpire saying this was partly because he had been working extra shifts with a competitor.

The Brisbane man, who was a full-time licensed aircraft maintenance manager from May 2023 to December 2025, was employed by Heston MRO, a line maintenance services provider to international airlines including Singapore Airlines.

In November last year, Singapore Airlines sent Heston MRO a notice withdrawing the man’s maintenance authority – an official permit – based on “mishandling incidents”.

Engineer Sacked Over 17-Minute Delay After Singapore Airlines Jet Reboot Awarded $28,000

A veteran Australian aircraft engineer has been awarded AU$40,000 (US$28,044) in compensation after being sacked following a 17-minute delay to a Singapore Airlines flight that he was said to have caused by powering down the aircraft to clear fault messages. The man had done so in agreement with the pilots of the flight in question, but the carrier argued that his actions were a breach of protocol.

The man's employer was Heston MRO, which provides maintenance to carriers such as Singapore Airlines. Heston investigated the matter and sided with the engineer, but he was later sacked after Singapore Airlines rejected the findings of the first investigation and demanded another. A tribunal ultimately decreed that he would not have to be reinstated, with his work at another airline also playing a role.

Engineer wins $28,000 after being fired over 17-minute delay

An Australian aircraft engineer received AU$40,000 after being dismissed for rebooting a Singapore Airlines jet, causing a 17-minute delay. The carrier claimed protocol breach; his employer initially cleared him but later reversed course. A tribunal declined reinstatement but ordered compensation for procedural failures.
