Two new faces named as Socceroos reveal World Cup squad

Cristian Volpato's dramatic last-ditch switch from Italy to Australia has been rewarded with selection for the World Cup before the attacker even makes his Socceroos debut.

Sassuolo playmaker Volpato, who switched allegiances from Italy to Australia just days ago, headlines Australia's 26-man squad along with 25-year-old uncapped striker Tete Yengi, while skipper Mat Ryan and veteran Mathew Leckie head to a fourth World Cup.

Volpato and Yengi join 15 other players in the group who could play their first World Cup games, including 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, while Ryan and Leckie will equal Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan as the only Australian players to go to four men's World Cups.

Socceroos’ World Cup squad revealed as Tony Popovic rolls dice with two uncapped strikers

Joe Gauci, Kye Rowles, Brandon Borrello and Martin Boyle miss out

The Socceroos have named two uncapped attackers in their World Cup squad for this month’s World Cup, as coach Tony Popovic rolls the dice in a bid to find an attacking spark.

Winger Cristian Volpato, the former Italy youth international, has been rushed into the squad after the paperwork allowing his change of allegiance was only completed in the past week. Towering striker Tete Yengi has also won a place after a strong year with Japanese club Machida Zelvia.

Coach Tony Popovic had to cut four players from his training squad to meet the 26-player limit. The unfortunate four are goalkeeper Joe Gauci, defender Kye Rowles and forwards Brandon Borrello and Martin Boyle.

Leaked documents show Australia's richest company quietly shelved plans to go green

Mining giant BHP quietly shelved billions of dollars of green projects despite promising the public it was committed to cutting emissions, and telling its board climate action was "urgent" and any delays would "risk" its reputation.

Hundreds of pages of internal BHP documents, exclusively leaked to Four Corners and Guardian Australia, reveal how the company sought to publicly position itself as a climate leader while internally finding reasons to put off action.

The documents focus on BHP's iron ore operations in the Pilbara, which made $US14.4 billion ($22 billion) in pre-tax profits last financial year, are the backbone of the company and helped make BHP the world's largest miner. Those WA mines account for more than a third of its Australian emissions.

The world’s biggest miner has halted or delayed projects to cut vast amounts of emissions and has quietly war-gamed options to push major climate investments in its Western Australian iron ore operations into the next two decades, internal documents show.

An exclusive investigation based on documents leaked to the Guardian and the ABC’s Four Corners can reveal that BHP, one of Australia’s biggest historic emitters, has dumped plans for a facility that could have significantly reduced emissions and has put on ice renewable projects designed to power its iron ore operations in the vast, resource-rich Pilbara region.

Australian Unemployment Hits 4.5% to Highest Level Since Late 2021

Australia's unemployment rate rose to its highest level in four and a half years in April, as a drop in female workforce participation weighed on the labor market. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.5%, marking its steepest level since November 2021, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This exceeded market expectations of 4.3%, which would have matched March's rate. The number of unemployed individuals grew by 33,000, while total employment dropped by 19,000, according to ABS head of labor statistics Sean Crick. "Compared to what we usually see in April, more people remained unemployed this month," Crick said. The decline in overall employment was primarily driven by a significant drop in female workers, with full-time positions falling by 19,000 and part-time roles shrinking by 13,000. "This is the first fall in female employment since August 2025," Crick said. The rise in unemployment comes amid broader economic pressures stemming from the war in the Middle East, which has dampened demand, weakened consumer sentiment, and driven up commodity costs, particularly fuel and oil prices. According to a private survey from S&P Global, Australia's private sector contracted for the second time in three months. The S&P Global Flash Australia PMI Composite Output Index fell back into contraction territory below the neutral 50.0 threshold, slipping to 47.8 in May from 50.4 in April. A slump in hiring was a major catalyst for the decline, with jobs across both the manufacturing and services sectors shedding at their fastest pace in more than five and a half years. Meanwhile, underemployment slipped to 5.8% in April from the prior month's 5.9%, while the participation rate decreased month on month to 66.7% from 66.8%. However, the working hours rose 0.9% to 15.8 million hours. "Hours worked is often viewed as a canary in the coal mine for any slowing in broader labor market conditions, as firms will typically trim staff hours before headcount," Commonwealth Bank senior economist Trent Saunders said. "So the increase in hours worked in April may suggest that conditions did not weaken as much as the seasonally adjusted employment data suggest." Despite the softer headline data, analysts still view Australia's labor market as resilient, and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) may well conclude that the job market remains "tight" ahead of its June meeting. "Overall, today's print supports our case that 4.35% will mark the peak for the cash rate over this cycle, with the activity data likely to soften enough to keep the RBA on hold at the August meeting following a pause in June," Adam Boyton, ANZ's head of Australian economics, said in a note to clients. "Our call for the RBA to pause in its June policy meeting is now high-conviction, and the chance that the RBA waits even longer is non-zero. Ultimately, though, the most immediate and pressing concern for the RBA is inflation," Westpac economist Ryan Wells said. "We continue to expect that the RBA will resume raising the cash rate when the size and pace of pass-through of the energy price shock is revealed."

Australia's slowdown, family fortunes — and the investment bet heading sky-high

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Australia's jobs market is starting to soften, with the latest unemployment figures strengthening expectations the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) could hold interest rates steady next month.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the federal budget continues, with proposed tax changes prompting fresh debate around wealth planning and investment structures — including testamentary discretionary trusts.

And investors are increasingly turning their attention to space, as the sector emerges as one of the market's newest — and riskiest — frontiers.

The unemployment rate climbed to 4.5 per cent in April, the highest level since late 2021, with nearly 19,000 jobs lost during the month. Women accounted for much of the decline, while youth unemployment also increased.

Shake up your margaritas with these Aussie agave spirits (just don’t call them tequila)

Australia isn’t just dabbling in Mexican-inspired spirits: it’s building a compelling category of its own.

Agave spirits from Australian distillers pay homage to Mexico’s famed tequila and mezcal production and culture – they work with the same plant material, namely Agave americana and Agave tequilana – but have a distinctly Antipodean edge, thanks to the trialling of different roasting methods, use of wild fermentations and hybrid distillation techniques.

This results in flavour profiles that swing between the expected herbaceous, saline and citrus-driven and smokier notes with a distinctly warm earthy edge.

A wave of pre-packaged, agave-based cocktails is also gaining real traction here. Australia isn’t just dabbling in agave spirit: it’s building a compelling category of its own.

Australia gives US ‘edge’ against China, says Trump’s pick for Canberra

A body found next to an abandoned ute 50km north-west of Lake Cargelligo is believed to be a gunman suspected of killing his pregnant former partner in remote New South Wales.
A large-scale manhunt for 37-year-old Julian Ingram has been under way since January when he allegedly shot Sophie Quinn, her new boyfriend and her aunt in Lake Cargelligo, about 450km west of Sydney.
Ingram was last seen driving a Ford Ranger ute with council signage from the town on 22 January.

The police said in a statement a short time ago that a man’s body, understood to be Ingram, was discovered beside an abandoned ute 50km north-west of Lake Cargelligo.

Australian passengers who were on board the hantavirus-hit cruise ship will be ordered to quarantine in Perth for at least three weeks, in what the federal government has declared a "precautionary approach" to keep the community safe.

Five Australians and one New Zealander will be transported to Western Australia on a government plane in the coming days and will be "immediately transferred" to a quarantine facility.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said "national quarantine arrangements" would be enacted to allow the federal government to take control off the states for quarantine and return arrangements.

London/Tenerife: An Australian flight will arrive in the Canary Islands on Monday to rescue passengers from the cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak, after furious complaints that nations were not sending aircraft quickly enough to collect those on board.

The MV Hondius arrived at the port of Granadilla in Tenerife early on Sunday morning (Sunday afternoon AEST) amid huge concern on the islands about the spread of the disease that killed three people who had been on board.

One answer to Australia's housing affordability crisis is hidden in plain sight

A new rental cooperative in Melbourne is offering low-income renters better housing than the private market.  (ABC News: Rhiannon Stevens)

Melbourne's skyline opens in front of Iain's couch like a pop-up book, and when he looks over it, he almost can't believe it: "It's like, 'Oh my god, I can see the world.'"

Iain's previous rental was a sinking, water-damaged one-bedroom flat that he struggled to afford. What he sees now from his fifth-floor apartment isn't just a view, it's an opportunity.

In Australia, Iain is a statistical anomaly. The low-income "forever renter" has found an affordable, rent-controlled apartment in a central location and a long-term lease. At a time when the number of home owners in Australia is declining, and many renters are experiencing financial stress and insecure leases, Iain feels lucky.

'Simply not believable': Housing plan gains criticism

The government's plan has been welcomed, but it's raised some questions. (ABC Pilbara: Kimberley Putland)

The WA government has promised to build more than 500 houses for government workers in regional cities.

The announcement is part of the Cook Government's 2026/27 budget and "Seven Cities" vision.

Master Builders WA says serious questions about the delivery of the initiative need to be answered.

The West Australian government has announced it plans to build 500 homes for public servants in regional areas over five years despite a "critical worker shortage".

The Pilbara is set to benefit the most from the commitment, with 305 homes expected to be built in Port Hedland and Karratha.
