The Senate committee scrutinising contentious proposed NDIS cuts has been given an extension after a deal between the government and Greens.

The inquiry received more than 4,000 public submissions in just over a fortnight and has heard grave concerns from across the disability sector.

The inquiry will now report in mid-August, with the government standing by its approach as "the right package" for the NDIS.

Disability advocates have welcomed a pause to a bill paving the way for the biggest-ever cuts to the NDIS, after a "ridiculous and disrespectful" Senate inquiry into the proposed overhaul of the scheme was given an eight-week extension.

And for 25 years it weighed Australian Olympian Scott Miller down. Drugs and bad decisions destroyed his life until a dramatic arrest and incarceration saved it.

When Miller went to the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 as a 21-year-old, the weight of a nation was on his ample shoulders.

He would win silver, beaten for gold in controversial circumstances by Russian Denis Pankratov, who swam more than a third of the race underwater, to break the only individual men's world record in a final at the meet.

Shattered, Miller threw the silver medal in the bin, only to have it retrieved by his mother, Jenny.

‘I know I’m not a bad person’: Scott Miller opens up about drugs, prison and Alan Jones in ABC documentary

Olympian turned convicted drug dealer Scott Miller isn’t expecting everyone to sympathise with his story, as told in an ABC News documentary charting his fall from grace and the rebuilding of his life.

The former butterfly swimmer was so stung by his last media appearance – a grilling by 60 Minutes’ Tara Brown following his 2013 arrest for possession of methamphetamine, for which he received a one-year suspended jail sentence – that he initially said no to the two-part series Deep End: The Scott Miller Story.

But, since his 2024 release from prison, after serving more than three years for his role in a drug syndicate supplying crystal meth, or “ice”, Miller feels the time is right to “clear up a few misconceptions”.

Brisbane Roar’s 2026 Hahn Australia Cup Round of 32 opponents have been confirmed with Michael Valkanis’ men set to travel to face NPL New South Wales outfit, Sydney Olympic in what will be their first competitive hit out of the 26/27 season.

Roar will compete in the final rounds for the first time since 2023 when they defeated Newcastle Jets, Sydney United, Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Knights to reach the final where they were defeated 3-1 by Sydney FC.

Michael Valkanis enters his second full season as Roar boss and will field a new-look side in the Round of 32 with four new faces confirmed and more to come ahead of the 26/27 campaign.

The Lowy Institute foreign policy think tank has produced a new report tracking the "dramatic" scale of Beijing's vast military build-up.

The analysis warns that the Chinese military can already hit Australia's trade routes, subsea cables and critical infrastructure and is developing a "real and growing" ability to hit the Australian mainland with missiles.

It says the threat to Australia would escalate "dramatically" if China secures a military base in the Pacific, or develops a bomber or drone that can reach Australia.

The rapid expansion of China’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet and long-range missile stockpile is fuelling its growing ability to hit targets in Australia, a threat that could expand dramatically over the next decade, new analysis warns.

A Lowy Institute paper, to be published on Monday, finds that China’s existing ability to strike the Australian mainland would be turbocharged by game-changing developments: the addition of a new long-range bomber to its military arsenal, as well as the ability to move existing assets closer to Australia via a military base in the Pacific.

The paper, based on open-source intelligence on China’s military modernisation, finds the Chinese navy is set to have 25 nuclear-powered attack submarines at its disposal by 2035, up from an estimated nine today.

Australia has named a strong swimming team for next month’s Commonwealth Games, headlined by world record holders Kaylee McKeown and Cam McEvoy, along with 15 Dolphins debutants, including emerging backstroke star Henry Allan.

On the sixth and final night of Australian trials, selectors unveiled a squad of 60 swimmers — across both able-bodied (42) and para (18) programs — for the Games in Glasgow, which begin on July 24.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic says it has been ordered by the US government to suspend foreigners' access to some of its advanced AI models.

The US government restrictions cite national security concerns over the AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

The news comes a day after a coalition of US state attorneys-general opened a sweeping investigation into OpenAI.

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI suspended over security fears

Anthropic has suspended its powerful new AI model after US authorities raised security concerns just days following its public release.

In a statement published on its website, Anthropic said it was ordered to suspend foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5, a program that the company self-described as "too powerful".

"The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance," the company wrote.

Anthropic and the Trump administration are involved in a separate ongoing lawsuit over an order to stop government agencies using the company's AI tools. The BBC has approached the US Department of Commerce for comment.
