Breaking: Stranded school students rescued from flooding Gold Coast national park

Heavy rainfall has led to rescues across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales overnight.

High school students on a school camp were rescued from rising floodwaters at Mount Barney National Park in the Scenic Rim.

The weather bureau is forecasting falls between 10 and 25 millimetres across the Gold Coast and hinterland today.

Almost 50 high school students and teachers have been rescued after becoming stranded by floodwater at a national park in the Scenic Rim.

The rescue was one of more than 10 performed across the region yesterday as heavy rain drenched parts of south-east Queensland.

Huge cloudband dumps a month’s worth of rain in a day

Brisbane’s unseasonal bleak weather is set to continue on Tuesday, after a unique cloudband dumped more than a month’s worth of rain on the city in 24 hours, causing woes on the city’s train lines and roads.

An umbrella will be a necessary accessory again on Tuesday, as the large north-west cloudband, which stretches from the Kimberley in WA all the way to south-east Queensland and further into the Tasman Sea, collides with a coastal trough.

“This is an impressive weather system, and it is relatively unseasonable,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Harry Clarke said.

The average May rainfall for Brisbane is about 69 millimetres. Brisbane received 74 millimetres of rain between midnight on Sunday and 4pm on Monday.

Breaking: Ruling upheld after transgender woman excluded from female-only app

A court ruling that the exclusion of transgender woman Roxanne Tickle from a female-only app was discriminatory has been upheld.

Roxanne Tickle has been awarded $20,000 in damages in the case against the Giggle for Girls app and its CEO Sall Grover.

A judge previously ruled Ms Tickle was discriminated against due to her gender identity after her access to the social media platform was restricted in 2021.

A landmark Federal Court ruling that the exclusion of a transgender woman from a female-only app constituted gender identity discrimination has been upheld on appeal.

The federal court upheld a landmark decision that found a women-only social media app and its founder unlawfully discriminated against Roxanne Tickle after the transgender woman was denied access to the app.

In her judgment on Friday afternoon, Justice Melissa Perry upheld a August 2024 finding that Tickle was discriminated against on the basis of her gender identity, and also sided with Tickle’s cross-appeal that she experienced two instances of direct discrimination by the Giggle for Girls app and its founder Sally Grover.

The app and Grover had challenged Justice Robert Bromwich’s milestone August 2024 decision which found they had indirectly discriminated against Tickle when she was barred from the platform because they thought she was a man.

Tickle v Giggle for Girls: Damages doubled after trans woman’s landmark discrimination win

A transgender woman who won a landmark discrimination suit after she was excluded from a social media app marketed as a “women-only safe space” has had her victory increased by an appeal court and her damages doubled.

Roxanne Tickle took the company behind the app, Giggle for Girls, and its founder, Sall Grover, to the Federal Court in 2022, alleging they breached Commonwealth discrimination laws.

The court ruled in Tickle’s favour in 2024 and ordered the company and Grover to pay Tickle $10,000 in compensation plus legal costs.

Grover and the company lodged an appeal. In a cross-appeal, Tickle asked the court to find the discrimination against her was direct, rather than indirect, and increase the damages.

BREAKING: Massive blow for Maroons as QLD superstar ruled out of Origin opener

Queensland superstar Tom Dearden will miss the State of Origin opener due to a syndesmosis injury, the North Queensland Cowboys have confirmed.

Dearden, Queensland’s incumbent halfback, suffered the injury during Friday’s golden point loss to the Parramatta Eels in Townsville, with the Cowboys confirming he would undergo surgery and miss 6-8 weeks.

The injury rules him out of the first State of Origin game, in Sydney on May 27, while he’s also in doubt for Game II, in Melbourne on June 17.

Injury update: Tom Dearden & Soni Luke

Scans have confirmed North Queensland Toyota Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden suffered a syndesmosis injury in last night's game against Parramatta.

Dearden will have surgery next week and is set for a 6-8 week recovery period.

Cowboys hooker Soni Luke is also set for a month on the sidelines after scans revealed he sustained a high-grade MCL tear.

PORT Adelaide ruckman Ivan Soldo has retired after 66 games at two clubs.

Soldo spent nine seasons at Richmond, playing 57 games, including the Tigers' 2019 premiership campaign.

He moved to the Power at the end of 2023 but played just nine games at Alberton.

The 30-year-old ruptured his ACL in February, ending his 2026 season, and he's now opted to retire from the game completely and move back to Melbourne.

"I just want to say thank you to everyone at the club – players, coaches, staff, and our supporters," Soldo said.

Soldo calls time on AFL career

Port Adelaide ruck Ivan Soldo has called time on his AFL career after more than a decade of football across two clubs.

The 30-year-old will retire effective immediately, however the club will continue to support his knee rehabilitation after he underwent surgery in February to repair his ACL.

Soldo finishes his career with 66 games to his name, including an AFL premiership for Richmond in 2019.

Signed by the Tigers as a category B rookie in mid-2014, he was scouted out of the state basketball system, having represented the ACT in under 16s and under 18s.

Playing his first AFL game in 2017, Soldo still holds the record for most hitouts on debut with 42.

Australia has lost the opening match of its Billie Jean King Cup tie against Great Britain, with Aussie spearhead Talia Gibson going down to teenager Mika Stojsavljevic in straight sets.

Gibson lost the opening set in a tiebreak, and came from 2-5 down in the second set to level at 5-5.

But the world number 56 was outplayed by the 17-year-old Brit to fall 7-6(4), 7-5 at John Cain Arena in Melbourne.

The result means Great Britian takes a 1-0 lead, with another singles match to be played on Friday.

Australia's quest to win a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is off to the worst possible start with spearhead Talia Gibson a shock loser to British teen Mika Stojsavljevic.

Gibson was expected to get the tie at Melbourne's John Cain Arena off to a flying start on Friday for the home side, but she fell 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to the lowly-ranked 17-year-old.

World No.56 Gibson took over as Australia's No.1 following injury to Maya Joint and arrived at the tie in sparkling form.

The 21-year-old had recently beaten five top 20-ranked players and rocketed to her career-high ranking.

Breaking: Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn to remain behind bars after bail denial

Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn has lost his bid for bail as he awaits a retrial for the alleged murder of an elderly camper.

The 59-year-old made the bid for release after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction late last year.

His defence team argued that the "exceptional circumstances" of the case meant Mr Lynn should be bailed to live with his son, who volunteered to put up his life savings as a surety.

During last week's bail application, defence barrister Dermot Dann argued Mr Lynn's time in custody before his conviction was among the exceptional circumstances weighing in favour of bail, alongside widespread "sensational" media coverage had "totally obliterated" the possibility of a fair trial in the foreseeable future.

The former pilot accused of killing camper Carol Clay and burning her remains in the High Country will remain in prison after being refused bail.

Greg Lynn, 59, was granted a retrial in December over allegations he fatally shot Clay, a 73-year-old retiree, in the head as she camped in the Wonnangatta Valley with friend Russell Hill, 74, in March 2020.

His legal team argued he should be released back into the community while awaiting the outcome of a fresh trial.

During a hearing last week, defence barrister Dermot Dann, KC, argued his client could live with his eldest son, Geordie Lynn, who owned a property he was also willing to offer up as a surety to guarantee his father’s release.

Bondi gunman Naveed Akram has been denied a visit from family members after a search of their car found a fruit knife and a handwritten note.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed Corrective Services stopped the family of the 24-year-old prisoner outside the super-max jail in Goulburn on Saturday.

“A search was conducted with the vehicle and found what has been described as a fruit knife and other pieces of writing,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Counter-terrorism police investigated the note and deemed it unrelated to terrorism matters. Lanyon would not divulge details of what the note contained.
