📸 A picture for the Louvre: Bayern star just misses goal of the year

Just how damn good is France? The Equipe Tricolore’s wealth of world-class players completely dominated Sweden in the round of 32 and could just as easily have won 6-0 instead of 3-0.

Need a few examples? First, Kylian MbappĂŠ scored from the slightest of offside positions, and just a few minutes later he hit the post with a close-range effort. Adrien Rabiot and Ousmane DembĂŠlĂŠ also came close to getting on the scoresheet.

But the most spectacular moment of the match came from Michael Olise. The Bayern Munich star unleashed a scissor kick from the edge of the box that crashed against the right post. It was this close to being the clear goal of the year…

Bayern Munich duo leads the charts in FIFA World Cup playmaking

Bayern Munich stars are the most dangerous at the World Cup so far, bar one particular Englishman…

Bayern Munich has more than a few players repping their countries on the big stage at the FIFA World Cup, but some may be doing better than others.

In a recent show of statistics, captured by Squawka, Joshua Kimmich has been in spectacular creative form. The midfielder has created more big chances (four) than any other player across the opening two rounds of fixtures at the tournament.

Right behind him on the list is his Bayern teammate Michael Olise, who has created three big chances for France, proving that the Bavarian club’s creative core is absolutely dominating on the world stage.

A Golden Boot Race For The Ages: How Messi, MbappĂŠ, Haaland Are Defying History

The Golden Boot may not always lead to team success, but the race for the individual award this summer might be one of the most compelling in recent memory.

Lionel Messi didn't start against Jordan on Matchday 3 of the 2026 World Cup. But of course, he still had a part to play. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni had no reason to bring him on. Sure, at the time, Argentina had let a two-goal advantage slip to one. There was a kernel of doubt forming in Albiceleste minds, perhaps. Yet, this was not a game that needed Messi.

But Messi wanted it. Or, at least, he played like he did. In 20-plus compelling minutes off the bench, the Argentine changed the complexion of the contest. When he came on the pitch, the aura changed, the vibe shifted. And, of course, there was the one moment. Should Yazeed Abulaila have saved Messi's 80th-minute free kick? Perhaps. It was a little close to him. It didn't require all that much movement.

France 3-0 Sweden: World Cup 2026 last 32 – live reaction

France were a cut above Sweden as they breezed into the last 16

Is Michael Olise the best former Reading player at the tournament?

Zafar Sobhan says: “It’s always a good sign when players come off without complaint. Especially when there’s a hat trick to be had.
”France now have a full reserve front line of Mateta, Cherki and Doue (with Barcola) on. They’re as good as any other country’s starters. Scary.”

Should we hand France the trophy now? It already feels like the tournament has gone on far too long, so it would make sense. The front four is far too good at the moment and Sweden were the latest victims. They will just be pleased they do not need to see the likes of Mbappe, Olise, Barcola and Dembele again anytime soon.

Who Is France's Next World Cup Opponent?

France blew past Sweden with a 3-0 victory to advance to the round of 16. Kylian MbappÊ found the back of the net twice, curling a shot around the goalkeeper with his right foot in the first half. He latched onto Bradley Barcola's through ball for a right-footed finish in the second half. Then Barcola got on the scoresheet for good measure.

After the impressive win, what's next for France at the World Cup? Here is who it will play in the round of 16 and the potential path to making the World Cup final.

After beating Sweden in the round of 32 on Tuesday, France will face Paraguay, which beat Germany on Monday. The round of 16 match between France and Paraguay will be Saturday, July 4, at 5 p.m. ET at Philadelphia Stadium (watch on FOX and stream on FOX One).

France vs Sweden live updates: Mbappe chases down World Cup goals record as Barcola strikes

Kylian Mbappe closed in on Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup goalscoring record as France swept past Sweden 3-0 in New York.

Mbappe struck twice at MetLife Stadium to take his World Cup knockout-stage tally to 10, the most in the competition’s history.

He is also now just one short of Messi’s all-time record of 19 World Cup goals. The two players are level in the 2026 Golden Boot race, with six goals each.

Bradley Barcola scored France’s excellent second goal, and they will next face Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.

Another vintage World Cup performance from a man who continues to stake his claim as the best player in world football.

World Cup live updates: Touching gesture for grieving coach after stunning goal

After Kylian Mbappé’s two goals against Sweden this morning, he has now joined Lionel Messi on top of the Golden Boot standings.

If we get another week of these two battling it out for the trophy, it will certainly be a joy to watch.

Up next for France is Paraguay, who knocked out Germany on Tuesday in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Can they produce similar magic up against this juggernaut French team?

It’s unfortunate we don’t get to see France versus Germany, but Paraguay now gets an enormous opportunity.

Still a few minutes left, but they lead Sweden 3-0 here in New Jersey.

From Cape Verde to drinks breaks: The World Cup group stage's surprises and stinkers

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The 2026 World Cup's group stage has come to an end, and it didn't disappoint, producing stunning moments, record-breaking feats and heartbreaking exits.

The group stage started with a wild match between Mexico and South Africa — which saw three red cards — and ended with a dramatic draw between Austria and Algeria, ending Iran's geopolitically tinged presence in the partly-US-hosted tournament.

In between, the group stage delivered many memorable moments, from unexpected qualifications to superstars coming through with the goods. It also saw a new record set for the most goals scored in any World Cup group stage.

World Cup 2026 power rankings: France still kings but who has climbed 26 places?

From Algeria to Uzbekistan, we assess the standing of the 48 nations after the group stage of the tournament

It took a little over an hour for Kylian Mbappé to find his groove. Irked by a poor refereeing decision, he scored twice in France’s opener against Senegal. Ably supported by a stunning cast, Mbappé will already have his sights on winning the competition. Michael Olise has shown his class throughout, while Ousmane Dembélé dazzled with a hat-trick against Norway. We’ll see if anyone can stop Didier Deschamps’ team.

Lionel Messi turned 39 this week but there is little indication he is slowing down. A missed penalty against Austria was the only blemish on his Group J record and, to be fair, he scored twice in that match, adding to his hat-trick against Algeria as he became the World Cup’s record goalscorer. Argentina’s success will hinge on their captain, which may explain why he was allowed a breather in the final group match – although he still came off the bench to score his sixth goal in the group stage.

FIFA World Cup 2026 LIVE updates: Paraguay v Germany goes to extra time at 1-1; Brazil score late to beat Japan; the Netherlands prepare for Morocco

Joshua Kimmich is up next for Germany, lining up to the left of the ball.

He takes a large pause and scores into the back left as Gill dives to the other side.

Now, it’s Paraguay’s turn to take their first shot.

It’s Mauricio who sends it into the bottom-right corner and past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give his team the lead.

Germany is up and goalscorer Kai Havertz will open for them.

Germany will start the penalty shootout as Orlando Gill walks to the goal.

There’s confusion as Junior Alonso fouls Jamal Musiala but also gets his foot stepped on in the process. Germany win the free kick but Alonso stays down for a while. It’s certainly getting fiery between both teams as the clock winds down, especially on this side of the pitch. Not long after winning a free kick, Musiala concedes one for a foul on Galarza, which he receives a yellow card for, too.

Women's T20 World Cup: South Africa stutter against Bangladesh but apply pressure to India

India were knocked out of the T20 World Cup at the group stage by a six-wicket defeat by Australia, meaning South Africa will play England in the semi-finals.

On a dramatic day at Lord's, South Africa first beat Bangladesh to leave India needing a win against unbeaten Australia to progress.

They looked well placed when a thrilling 56 from 27 balls by captain Harmanpreet Kaur lifted their score 170-4 amid partisan support and with superstar Virat Kohli in the stands.

India, who took 36 runs from the final two overs, were on top again when they reduced Australia to 68-3 in the 10th over of the chase.

South Africa scrapes past Bangladesh and leaves India needing to upset Australia at Lord's

LONDON (AP) — Australia produced a statement group-closing win that eliminated India and advanced South Africa into the semifinals of the Women's Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday.

Australia looked primed for a seventh crown in 10 World Cups after blowing away India by six wickets with an over to spare at a packed Lord's.

India had to win to overtake South Africa for the last semifinal spot.

But half-centuries by Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner in a 100-run partnership off 59 balls powered Australia to victory in front of an India-heavy crowd of 27,163, a second record attendance for a World Cup group match in 24 hours.

The World Cup knockout stage brackets plus printable wall chart: who wins it from here?

With the end of the group stage, the FIFA World Cup moves into the knockouts and it has already thrown up some real curveballs.

Japan will face Brazil, Portugal take on Croatia and the Netherlands play Morocco in three of the heavyweight fixtures much earlier than any of those sides would have wanted to meet teams of that calibre.

“I think Argentina has pulled a rabbit out of the bag with their bracket; at least on paper they should have a very clear route to the semis at least, to play Spain,” former Denmark captain Thomas Sorensen said on the Football360 Today Podcast, which you can listen to here, or on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube.

World Cup 2026: Key takeaways from the second round of group stage matches

Here’s a look at the viral moments and on-field controversies as well as the biggest players, best performances, goals and more.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined the party, Lionel Messi set a new record, Iran once again displayed their fighting spirit and Turkiye were shown the door.

The second round of the 2026 World Cup group stage had a fair amount of drama.

Unlike other high-profile strikers at the tournament who came out all guns blazing from the get-go, Ronaldo needed some time to open his account. But his two goals in Portugal’s 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan on Tuesday were enough to silence the critics as the 41-year-old became the first player in history to score in six World Cups.

Here are the FIFA rankings for every third-place team in 2026 World Cup tiebreaker

With the World Cup field expanded to 48 teams and 32 in the knockout stage, it might be time to get weird with tiebreakers.

For the first time, a team's place in the FIFA World Rankings could come into play and determine who advances to the knockout stage.

The world rankings are the seventh and final tiebreaker within groups, but three of the six tiebreakers ahead of them are head-to-head tiebreakers. Because third-place teams are in different groups and don't have head-to-head matchups with their counterparts, there is a chance the world rankings come into play as a tiebreaking method.

Here's a look at the FIFA World Ranking for every third-place team at the World Cup.
