Former BBC Radio 1 DJ and Live Aid presenter Andy Kershaw has died aged 66, his family has confirmed, saying he died around 19:30 BST on Thursday.

It had been announced in January that the broadcaster, who also had his own podcast, had been diagnosed with cancer and was unable to walk.

Kershaw was a familiar voice on Radio 1 for 15 years from 1985, known for his eclectic taste and for helping champion world music.

Kershaw was born in Rochdale in 1959, and after studying at Leeds University, he began his career in the early 80s at Radio Aire in Leeds as a promotions manager, forging a partnership with veteran presenter Martin Kelner.

BBC radio DJ Andy Kershaw dies aged 66

DJ spent almost three decades working for corporation and was best known for Radio 1 show from 1985 to 2000

The broadcaster Andy Kershaw, best known for the BBC Radio 1 show he hosted for 15 years, has died aged 66, his family told the corporation.

His long career working for the BBC began in 1984 as host of the rock music show The Old Grey Whistle Test. He co-presented the corporation’s television coverage of Live Aid.

Exclusive: Former ANU VC accused of ‘serious misconduct’

Four months after her premature departure as vice-chancellor of the Australian National University, Genevieve Bell was suspended from her ongoing role as a distinguished professor and barred from entering the campus or speaking to staff, students and members of the governing council.

On January 13, Bell was presented with a show cause notice alleging “serious misconduct” in the promotion of her close friend and colleague, Andrew Meares. Meares, a former newspaper photographer, was made a full professor in the School of Cybernetics against the advice of the university’s own promotion panel and despite having no university qualifications.

Documents seen by The Saturday Paper show Bell actively intervened in Meares’s career trajectory on multiple occasions.

The Australian National University's former vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell had reportedly been suspended from her role as a distinguished professor and banned from campus over alleged serious misconduct in her promotion of a colleague.

Professor Bell, who resigned as vice-chancellor last year over growing disquiet about her leadership, was reportedly issued a show-cause notice by interim vice-chancellor Rebekah Brown on January 13, alleging misconduct in the promotion of Andrew Meares to a professor in the School of Cybernetics, The Saturday Paper first reported.

Former BBC Wales producer denies possessing indecent images of children

A former BBC Wales producer has denied six counts of possessing or making indecent photographs of children, after images were found on four devices that belonged to him.

Dylan Dawes, 50, told police he had "no knowledge" of the images, but said the devices had previously "been left for extended periods" of time at his workplace.

The jury at Cardiff Crown Court were told that more than 6,200 images had been found or recovered, including 192 Category A images.

Dawes, from Cardiff, said he had looked at "adult" pornography in the past, but denied having a sexual interest in children.

BBC accused of bias after quietly removing anonymous quote begging Iran to be 'nuked to death'

Social media users are criticising BBC of biased and inconsistent reporting of the war on Iran, after a viral post on X drew attention to what critics say are double standards in the broadcaster’s narratives and editorial decisions.

The latest viral post on X exposed what critics call blatant manipulation in Iran war reporting. The post, which has racked up over 13,000 likes and 350,000 views in hours, spotlighted BBC Senior Reporter Ghoncheh Habibiazad’s article that initially quoted an anonymous “Iranian” begging for Iran to be left without electricity and water before being “levelled” and “nuked to death.”

The quote was silently removed after being flagged on social media, with no formal correction issued by the BBC.

Wisconsin football mourns passing of former tight end Jack Pugh

MADISON – The Wisconsin football program is mourning the passing of Jack Pugh, a tight end who spent three years in the program.

A four-star recruit coming out of high school, Pugh was a member of the Badgers’ 2021 recruiting class. Pugh focused on basketball during his first two years at Hilliard Bradley High School near Columbus, Ohio, before joining the football team as a junior. Despite the lack of experience, Pugh received nearly two dozen offers that included Michigan, Penn State, MIchigan State, Maryland and Minnesota.

His last year with the Badgers was 2023, though he spent that season away from the program due to personal reasons. In December of '23 he announced his retirement due to health reasons.

Jack Pugh, a tight end from Columbus, Ohio, passed away, according to the statement.

Pugh played high school football at Hilliard Bradley and was considered a four-star prospect by 247 Sports.

Pugh redshirted for the Badgers in 2021 and appeared in one game in 2022. Pugh was named “Academic All-Big Ten” in 2022.

Ex-Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa is Alive; Viral Death Rumors debunked

ISLAMABAD – Several social media posts claiming that former Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has passed away, and these reports turned to be another propaganda.

Fact-checkers identified that an Indo-Afghan X account operating from Kabul has been spreading this misinformation, falsely reporting his death.

Sources said Bajwa, 65, is alive and in good health. The confusion appears to stem from a real incident in February 2026, when he suffered a fall in his bathroom at his Rawalpindi residence. He slipped in wee hours, sustaining head injuries that required hospitalization.

Bajwa was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), initially in the ICU, and underwent treatment for his injuries. Some reports mentioned hairline skull fractures or fainting caused by a heart block-related issue, but his condition was stable.

Expressing “gratitude” for his work, Bell said: “As I noted at the Commission’s initial hearing, Mr Richardson was uniquely well placed to advise on the material to be sought from our intelligence and security agencies in order to assess the effectiveness of their preparedness for, and response to, a terrorist attack.”

The Albanese government’s Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has suffered a major setback with the resignation of Dennis Richardson whose role was to probe whether intelligence failures were a factor in last year’s Bondi massacre.

Richardson declined to comment on why he walked away from his special advisory role, but it is understood he had become increasingly frustrated with the legal processes and felt he was wasting his time.

Former ASIO boss Dennis Richardson has quit his position as special adviser to the antisemitism royal commission, just weeks before commissioner Virginia Bell is due to deliver her interim report into the performance of the nation’s intelligence and police agencies.

Bell announced Richardson’s shock resignation in a statement on Wednesday night, surprising peak Jewish community groups who were racing to find out why he had abruptly stepped down.

Richardson’s resignation represents a difficult start for the royal commission, which is scrambling to meet tight deadlines set for it by the government and carving out key areas of enquiry to avoid prejudicing the criminal trial into the massacre.

Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn has lost his bid for bail as he awaits a retrial for the alleged murder of an elderly camper.

The 59-year-old made the bid for release after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction late last year.

His defence team argued that the "exceptional circumstances" of the case meant Mr Lynn should be bailed to live with his son, who volunteered to put up his life savings as a surety.

During last week's bail application, defence barrister Dermot Dann argued Mr Lynn's time in custody before his conviction was among the exceptional circumstances weighing in favour of bail, alongside widespread "sensational" media coverage had "totally obliterated" the possibility of a fair trial in the foreseeable future.

The former pilot accused of killing camper Carol Clay and burning her remains in the High Country will remain in prison after being refused bail.

Greg Lynn, 59, was granted a retrial in December over allegations he fatally shot Clay, a 73-year-old retiree, in the head as she camped in the Wonnangatta Valley with friend Russell Hill, 74, in March 2020.

His legal team argued he should be released back into the community while awaiting the outcome of a fresh trial.

During a hearing last week, defence barrister Dermot Dann, KC, argued his client could live with his eldest son, Geordie Lynn, who owned a property he was also willing to offer up as a surety to guarantee his father’s release.
