When the Iran war ends, the United States and Israel will declare victory and move on. Iran will likely do the same. It will frame the airstrikes on Kharg Island, the destruction of Iranian naval assets, and the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as the price it paid for standing up to U.S.-Israeli aggression. But airstrikes and destroyed naval assets will not address the economic damage Iran has absorbed. Tehran will be left with shattered infrastructure, an economy in freefall, and a political class that needs to show its population that it has extracted something tangible from the war.

As Trump’s deadline for Iran to open Hormuz nears, Tehran says will respond in kind to attacks on civilian facilities.

Iran war live updates: Trump warns 'entire civilisation will die' if Iran ultimatum expires

US President Donald Trump's deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz will expire at 10am AEST.

Hours before that deadline, Mr Trump posted on social media that: "A whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again."

He has threatened to strike civilian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, if the Islamic Republic does not cooperate with his demands.

The UN rights chief has warned that deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure is considered "a war crime".

"Under international law, deliberately attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure is a war crime," Volker Turk said in a statement.

How might the Strait of Hormuz be reopened? Here are 3 scenarios

Australian National University provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has reached a critical juncture. President Donald Trump has demanded Iran reopen the strait or the United States will further intensify its military assault.

While the strait has not been totally closed to shipping, it has been substantially disrupted and transits have effectively slowed to a trickle. The strait is economically and strategically unique due to the access it provides to the Persian Gulf from which there is no exit point. All shipping passes in and out a single waterway.

The key navigational choke point borders Iran to the north and Oman to the south. It’s only 29 nautical miles wide (53 kilometres) and consists of two-mile-wide (just over three kilometres) navigable channels for inbound and outbound shipping as well as a two-mile-wide buffer zone. This is all in Iranian waters.

Iran threatens Bab al-Mandeb closure: How would that affect world trade?

If the chokepoint were shut, along with the Strait of Hormuz, a quarter of the world’s energy and a giant chunk of Asia’s exports to Europe would be blocked.

A top adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has threatened that Iranian allies could shut the Bab al-Mandeb shipping route as Tehran has effectively done with the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bab-al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a crucial waterway for global oil trade. Its importance has increased since Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped in peacetime.

US drops 1,000-kg bunker buster bombs on Iran's Isfahan, which has key nuclear facility | World News

The United States struck a key ammunition facility in Iran's Isfahan using 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, just hours after President Donald Trump hinted at ending the offensive.

According to a US official who spoke to Wall Street Journal, a large number of penetrator munitions were used in the operation, suggesting the target included fortified or underground structures. Isfahan is a critical military hub and is closely linked to Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

Trump also shared footage of the strike on Truth Social, posting a video that shows multiple explosions tearing through the night sky. The clip, which was not accompanied by any explanation, was later identified by officials as showing the Isfahan attack.

Live: Iran threatens to retaliate if Pentagon orders ground operation

Tehran is threatening to retaliate if US forces are deployed for a weeks-long operation in the Middle East.

US media reported overnight that the White House was considering such an operation, as the war between the US, Israel and Iran passed the one-month mark.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli Defense Forces would expand their control of territory in southern Lebanon.

US says Iran seeking 'exit ramp' despite mixed ceasefire signals

The White House insists talks to end the war with Iran are continuing, despite conflicting reports over Iran's response to a US ceasefire proposal.

Speaking at the White House, press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the US was "very close" to meeting its "core objectives" and that Tehran was seeking an "exit ramp".

The comments come amid a series of conflicting reports about Iran's response to a 15-point ceasefire proposal sent by the Trump administration earlier this week to Iran via Pakistani intermediaries.

'No intention of negotiating for now,' says Iranian minister, as US insists war goals almost met

The US is "very close" to meeting its objectives in Iran, the White House says, adding that Iran's regime is looking for an "exit ramp"

But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the country will keep "defending" itself. There is "no intention of negotiating for now," he tells state media

Araghchi says "friendly countries" may have conveyed messages between the US and Iran, but this does not amount to "dialogue" – the White House has suggested talks are ongoing

Iran earlier issued five conditions to end the war, an Iranian official told state media, including a conclusion to the conflict "across all fronts" and payment of reparations

Iran makes ceasefire demands, Trump ready to ‘unleash hell’

Washington | Iran is seeking commitments from US President Donald Trump on five demands before it agrees to end the war, as the White House insisted its peace talks to end the conflict have been productive.

Underlining the early, delicate nature of the talks and the continued sabre-rattling on both sides, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) Iran was looking for “an exit ramp” to a war that has upended markets and supply chains around the world and wreaked havoc across the Middle East.

LIVE UPDATES: Aussie trucking industry issues dire warning; Iran's military says Strait of Hormuz will be 'completely closed' if US bombs power plants; ASX falls, loses $56 billion

Hello and welcome to our live rolling coverage of the war in the Middle East this Monday, March 23.

Iran has responded after US President Donald Trump threatened to "obliterate" its power plants if the Strait of Hormuz wasn't opened within 48 hours.

At least six ships carrying oil bound for Australia have been cancelled as the federal government admits working from home can help remedy the fuel crisis.

Iran warned any strike on its energy facilities would prompt attacks on US and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets — specifically information technology and desalination facilities — in the region.

Meanwhile, the Australian transport industry has warned the fuel crisis caused by the war could prove catastrophic.

Iran says Japanese ships will be allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz, in the latest sign that Tehran has started pursuing a selective blockade of the strategic waterway.

“We have not closed the strait. In our opinion, the strait is open. It is closed only to ships belonging to our enemies, countries that attack us. For other countries, ships can pass through the strait ,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Japan’s Kyodo News late on Friday.
