Offer from Iran’s president not to attack neighbours provokes internal backlash

As Masoud Pezeshkian tries to de-escalate conflict, hardliners urge installation of new supreme leader to marginalise the president

The surprise offer by the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, not to attack countries in the neighbourhood so long as their airspace and US bases within their territories are not used to attack Iran has provoked a storm inside the country as the military appeared to contradict him, if not outright overrule him.

There were also calls for a new supreme leader to be installed as quickly as possible, as a means of marginalising the president. Attacks on facilities in Bahrain and elsewhere have continued, and there were unconfirmed reports that Bahrain had become the first Gulf country to fire back at Iran.

Why are Iranian leaders sending mixed messages on Gulf attacks?

Attacks on the Gulf continue as President Pezeshkian’s remarks receive pushback from the powerful IRGC.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered an apology to neighbouring countries that have been subjected to Tehran’s retaliatory strikes since the United States and Israel launched a military offensive on the country.

But Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed its disapproval of the president’s remarks on Saturday, warning neighbouring countries that Tehran would continue attacks if US and Israel used their territory to attack Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not going to stop attacks while Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, underscored Tehran’s right to self-defence.

As we head into the Australian night, here’s what we covered today.

A prominent cleric in Iran, Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, urged the country’s Assembly of Experts to act quickly and name a new supreme leader, likely in response to the ongoing political confusion.

Buildings associated with the 88-cleric panel have been hit by airstrikes in the war, likely slowing any meeting of the group.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia report more attacks as Trump says the war will only end when Iran’s leaders ‘cry uncle’ or their military is no longer functional.

Watch: Huge flames in Tehran after Israeli strikes on oil refineries

Witnesses in Tehran captured the aftermath of oil depots being hit by airstrikes as flames and smoke engulfed the surrounding cityscape.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it struck "several fuel storage complexes" in Iran's capital, which the country's National Iranian Oil Company later confirmed.

Live – Iran oil sites burn as Israel threatens Khamenei successor | Iran International

President Donald Trump said Iran’s next leader would not "last long" without US approval in an interview with ABC News.

Missile strikes and explosions continued to be reported in several Iranian cities on Sunday, including Tehran, Tabriz, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas, Ahvaz and areas near Yazd.

Iranian clerics said the Assembly of Experts has already chosen a new supreme leader, though disagreements remain over when and how to publicly announce the decision.

President Trump said on Saturday he does not want the Kurds to "go in" and get killed while fighting Iran's regime, when asked about a possible ground operation of Kurdish opposition groups against Iran.

The Iranian women’s football team is facing an impossible situation.

As the players try to prepare for their final Women’s Asian Cup game against the Philippines on the Gold Coast this weekend, they must contend with two possible realities.

One, where they return home, and could face punishment from the Islamic Republic regime for choosing not to sing the national anthem before their first game. Or another, where they stay in Australia, and their families and loved ones could instead suffer retribution.

While Trump monetises war, Iran women’s team deliver great act of sporting heroism | Barney Ronay

In refusing to sing the national anthem these athletes have placed themselves in grave danger while Gianni Infantino sides with the American war machine

A small but telling detail from a vast and baffling chain of events. You probably saw the footage of Donald Trump’s declaration of war on Iran two weeks ago, a piece of history played out in real time, a moment where the inevitable violent deaths of thousands of people were in effect announced.

In the video Trump is shown propped up at his plinth, using that sing-song intonation he employs to appear cod-statesmanlike, faux-grave, but sounding instead like a semi-sentient robot vacuum cleaner in the seconds before it runs out of battery life. To the great people of Iran. America is backing you. Don’t go outside. It’s very dangerous out there. We will for the foreseeable future be bombing you to freedom.

The Iranian women’s football players define heroism

The plight of the Iranian national football team after being accused of treachery by a regime mouthpiece is harrowing, but it’s just one example of their extraordinary courage.

The Iranian national women’s football team’s refusal to sing the national anthem during their opening Asian Cup match against South Korea on Monday saw them described as wartime “traitors” who should be “dealt with more severely” by a commentator on state television.

Forced to play wearing a Muslim headscarf, long-sleeve shirts and pants, these women used their only available tool to give the middle finger to their Islamic Republic oppressors.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the US is advancing its operation inside Iran, saying "the amount of firepower over Iran and over Tehran is about to surge dramatically".

Israel meanwhile has threatened further strikes in Lebanon, pulling its northern neighbour deeper into the widening conflict.

US President Donald Trump has reportedly said he needs to be personally involved in the selection of Iran's next leader, dismissing the likely successor — the son of the slain supreme leader — as "unacceptable".

The United States is "accelerating" its attacks on Iran, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said, while US President Donald Trump claims Iranian officials have tried to "make a deal".

Middle East crisis live: Israel bombs Tehran and Beirut as Trump says no deal with Iran ‘except unconditional surrender’

Tell us: how have you been affected by the latest events in the Middle East?

The Israeli military announced a “new stage” in its campaign against Iran, with US and Israeli officials hinting at escalating strikes. The IDF said it has “additional surprising moves” as part of this new phase, without elaborating, while US defence secretary Pete Hegseth announced that strikes on Iran will “surge dramatically”.

The IDF claimed to have destroyed the underground bunker of the slain Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which it claims is still used by senior Iranian officials. The Israeli military said approximately 50 fighter jets dropped about 100 bombs at the site in Tehran, which it claimed spread across multiple streets and included “many entry points”. There was no immediate comment from Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is, quite possibly, at its weakest point since its founding, in 1979. In June, Israeli and U.S. attacks destroyed its uranium enrichment capacity and many of its air defense systems. In December and January, the country experienced the most widespread domestic uprising since the birth of the Islamic Republic. Throughout, it has faced spiraling economic and environmental crises that it cannot fix. None of these events has knocked out the Islamic Republic. But there is no doubt it is down.
