    Washington: Donald Trump has distanced himself from an Israeli attack on a key Iranian gas field, while also issuing fresh threats, as tit-for-tat strikes on energy infrastructure escalate the Middle East conflict and propel oil prices even higher.

    Iran’s South Pars offshore gas field – the Iranian sector of the world’s largest natural gas reserve – came under attack on Wednesday, prompting the regime in Tehran to retaliate by firing missiles at Qatari liquified natural gas sites and Israel.

    As countries worldwide, including Australia, grapple with spiking oil prices, the attacks sent the price of Brent Crude above $US111 ($157) a barrel for the first time during the nearly three-week-old war.

    The US president also said in a post on his Truth Social platform that the US “knew nothing” about Israel’s Wednesday attack at the South Pars field, which Iran shares with Qatar, and neither did Doha. Trump said that “no more attacks will be made by Israel” on the field – unless Iran “decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar”.

    European countries have ruled out sending warships to the strait of Hormuz, despite threats from Donald Trump that Nato faces “a very bad future” if members fail to help reopen the vital waterway.

    Germany ruled out participation in any military activity, including efforts to reopen the strait. “There was never a joint decision on whether to intervene. That is why the question of how Germany might contribute militarily does not arise. We will not do so,” the chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said.

    As the US and Israel’s assault on Iran grinds on, the Trump administration has issued increasingly bellicose claims that American and Israeli forces are delivering ferocious blows to the Iranian regime.

    The US secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, warned of the “most intense” day of strikes yet on March 10. And Donald Trump followed with a claim that the war will end soon because there is “practically nothing left” in Iran for the US military to target.

    Iran’s 'oil lifeline’ has been left untouched in the conflict. What happens if it's seized?

    The prospect of a U.S. move to seize Kharg Island, a strategically vital hub often referred to as Iran's "oil lifeline," is considered extremely high risk, both from a geopolitical and economic standpoint.

    The five-mile-long coral island, which is located about 15 miles off the coast of mainland Iran in the waters of the northern Persian Gulf, has been left untouched through nearly two weeks of U.S. and Israeli-led strikes against Iran.

    The Trump administration has discussed seizing the island, according to an Axios report on March 7, citing four unnamed sources with knowledge of the discussions.

    White House officials have previously said they expect oil prices to fall dramatically once Operation Epic Fury comes to an end, while White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has said the president "wisely" keeps all options on the table.

    Why Iran’s vital Kharg Island oil hub is still untouched by US-Israel bombers

    While some argue for destroying the terminal through which 90% of Iran’s oil exports flow, others caution of a global market ‘tailspin’

    Kharg Island – through which 90% of Iran’s oil exports flow – is arguably the country’s most sensitive economic target but the export terminal has so far remained untouched throughout the US-Israel bombing campaign.

    Experts say bombing or capturing the site with US forces would be likely to cause a sustained increase to already surging oil prices, as it would amount to taking the entirety of Iran’s daily crude exports offline.

    “We may see the $120 a barrel price we saw on Monday heading to the $150 if Kharg were attacked,” said Neil Quilliam, with the Chatham House thinktank. “It’s too vital for global energy markets”.

    The FBI warned police departments in California in recent days that Iran could retaliate for American attacks by launching drones at the West Coast, according to an alert reviewed by ABC News.

    "We recently acquired unverified information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran," according to the alert distributed at the end of February. "We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack."

    An Iran-linked hacker group has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on a medical tech company in what appears to be the first significant instance of Iran’s hacking an American company since the start of the war between the countries.

    The company, Stryker, which is headquartered in Michigan, produces a range of medical equipment and technology.

    Historically, Iran has conducted some of the most infamous “wiper” cyberattacks on national enemies, aiming to simply erase all data on computers’ networks. Victims include Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, in 2012, and the Sands Casino in 2014.

    Since the war started, some established hacker groups sympathetic to Iranian leadership have claimed minor attacks, but most have been relegated to briefly altering the appearance of a website, and none have appeared to have had major impact. Some tech and cybersecurity companies, including Google, and the email cybersecurity company Proofpoint have told NBC News that they have largely seen Iran’s hackers conducting espionage related to the war.

    Iran-linked hackers hit medical giant Stryker in retaliatory cyberattack

    Group claims to have seized 50 terabytes of data in response to deadly US-Israeli strikes on Iranian school that killed more than 170 people.

    A major cyberattack has crippled the global networks of Stryker, one of the world’s largest medical device companies, with an Iran-linked hacking group claiming responsibility and warning it marks “the beginning of a new chapter in cyber warfare”.

    Handala, a hacking persona with documented ties to Tehran, said it carried out the attack in retaliation for the killing of more than 170 people, most of them schoolgirls, in a strike on a school in the southern Iranian city of Minab on the first day of the US-Israeli military war against Iran.

    An Iran-linked group said it hacked a US medical company, causing “global disruption” to its systems, in retaliation for the bombing of the Minab school in Iran, in an attack seen as widening the Middle East into the cyber realm.

    Handala, a hacker group, claimed responsibility for the attack on Wednesday on the Stryker Corporation, which makes medical devices and is based in Michigan. It affected thousands of employees using the company’s Microsoft systems.

    Australia faces a worsening fuel shortage due to the conflict in the Middle East.

    Regional businesses have started rationing fuel, while some towns, farmers and transport companies report they have been cut off completely.

    Suppliers say farmers and fishing operations are days from grinding to a halt, and Easter food supplies are at risk.  

    Dozens of docked fishing trawlers and other vessels have been stranded as a result of Australia's worsening fuel shortages, which some distributors have described as the worst they have seen.

    As Australians face high petrol prices in the face of extreme oil price volatility, there are concerns the agriculture sector might not have the supplies it needs.

    Some areas of regional Australia are experiencing fuel rationing – at a time when many winter crops are weeks from being sown.
