    Hundreds of people are reported missing, including more than 300 foreign nationals, as the death toll is expected to rise.

    Flash floods on Nepal-Tibet border leave scores dead and hundreds missing

    More than 1,000 people have now been declared missing after a catastrophic flash flood in Nepal and Tibet, the majority of which are tourists.

    Nepal’s disaster agency has said 823 people remain out of contact on Thursday, more than 24 hours after the disaster hit. The 823 included at least 579 tourists, both Nepali and foreigners, it said in an update.

    At least 165 people are confirmed killed, in both Nepal and in China, where a further 558 people are reported missing.

    ABC removes more episodes by sacked reporter Mahmood Fazal after investigation into anonymous sources

    An ABC review of sacked reporter Mahmood Fazal's use of anonymous interviewees has found three more episodes of concern from Four Corners and Background Briefing.

    Two episodes have been withdrawn and another has had a short segment edited out.

    A separate ABC Ombudsman review into two Four Corners episodes is still underway. 

    The ABC has withdrawn a further two episodes by sacked Four Corners reporter Mahmood Fazal and edited another due to concerns about anonymous interviewees. 

    Fazal's employment was terminated in May after an ABC investigation into his appearance on a podcast with a former underworld figure last year, ABC managing director Hugh Marks confirmed at a Senate estimates hearing in May.

    ABC removes third Four Corners episode led by Mahmood Fazal

    The ABC has removed two more investigative programs associated with sacked reporter Mahmood Fazal, including a Four Corners episode about hitmen operating in Sydney, after completing its internal review into the journalist’s work for the national broadcaster.

    Acting news director Lee Glendinning told ABC staff on Monday that the broadcaster had removed three more pieces of content, including an episode of flagship investigative radio show Background Briefing and part of a separate Four Corners episode Fazal had co-reported.

    The removals are part of a deepening scandal at the ABC, which had trusted Fazal to front some of its most prominent programs, but removed him in May after he appeared on an unauthorised external podcast. That led ABC sources to raise concerns about the authenticity of sources on some of Fazal’s broadcasts, three of which have already been pulled.

    Mercedes-Benz recalls more than 58,000 luxury cars over electrical fault

    Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has recalled more than 58,000 of its cars due to an electrical fault which may increase the risk of an accident.

    The recall affects a range of cars manufactured from 2018 to 2026, including some AMG models, some of which can retail for about $190,000.

    “Due to a manufacturing defect, the door-lock microswitch may be susceptible to water damage and could fail,” the recall notice said.

    “If this occurs, the door may not be detected as open, preventing the auto-park feature from operating as intended.

    “A loss of auto-park feature may result in unintended vehicle movement.

    “This increases the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.

    Mercedes-Benz recalls over 58,000 vehicles in Australia

    More than 58,000 Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG vehicles produced between 2018 and 2026 are being recalled due to an electrical fault.

    Mercedes-Benz Australia is recalling over 58,000 vehicles across several model lines as they may not automatically shift into park.

    "Due to a manufacturing defect, the door-lock microswitch may be susceptible to water damage and could fail. If this occurs, the door may not be detected as open, preventing the auto park feature from operating as intended," the company says in its recall notice.

    This refers to the vehicle shifting into park when the door is opened.

    "A loss of auto park feature may result in unintended vehicle movement. This increases the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users," the notice reads.

    New data from Brisbane Zero shows last financial year there were 984 families, including 1,539 children, who were identified by name as experiencing homelessness in the city.

    The snapshot is used to understand the scale of homelessness in Brisbane, and to recommend ways to improve the situation.

    Caitlyn Wheatley, a youth ambassador with the Foyer Foundation, reminded people to remember that a person sleeping rough is "someone's someone".

    More than 70 per cent of families listed by name as experiencing homelessness in Brisbane last year had a single mother as the sole parent, new data shows.

    Simple census blunder could see you slapped with hefty fines

    The census is less than a week away and many Australians are still unsure about when and how they must complete the compulsory national survey.

    It could lead some to commit a costly blunder by failing to fill out the census, or providing false information.

    Census night falls on Tuesday, August 11 and most households will complete the census online.

     The Age

    The census is mandatory and anyone in Australia who does not fill it out on or by Tuesday, August 11 risks being fined up to $364 a day.

    You still have to do the census if you are travelling or away from home on census night, but Australians who are overseas on August 11 don’t need to complete it.

    One of Australia's biggest tomato brands and two major supermarkets are selling products that independent scientific testing shows do not match the country of origin stated on their labels.

    Forensic testing conducted for Four Corners has revealed dozens of tomato paste and passata products that claim to be from Australia or Italy are actually from China.

    About half of those are sourced from Xinjiang, an area known internationally for its use of forced labour.

    The majority of Leggo's tomato paste products tested, in tins, cans, and bottles, were found to have misleading labels. The company, owned by US food giant Simplot, makes strong claims on its packaging that it sources from Australian farms.

    Food fraud investigation reveals the disturbing truth behind the labels

    Australians could be paying for food that is not what it claims to be.

    A Four Corners investigation has uncovered products whose labels did not match independent scientific testing, raising serious questions about the integrity of Australia's food supply.

    From cage-free eggs and Australian seafood to tomato products, spices and alcohol, the findings expose weaknesses in the systems designed to protect consumers.

    The eight-month investigation collated thousands of food import inspection records, national food recalls, state regulatory records and international food fraud intelligence. 

    It found that, despite hundreds of contaminated or unsafe food products being detected at the border each year, including rice containing arsenic and cheese contaminated with listeria, only a fraction of imported food is inspected, and testing for dangerous contaminants has declined since 2019.

    It looks like System of a Down and Faith No More are coming to Australia very soon.

    The iconic alt-metal outfit’s famous hand symbol was spotted on murals in Melbourne and Sydney on Friday and sent to Rolling Stone AU/NZ (see below), while a light projection spotted in Brisbane in the evening displayed the same, as well as Faith No More’s signature logo. (per Wall of Sound).

    If System of a Down are to head to Australia, it would be their first shows in the country in over a decade, having last played at the now-defunct Soundwave festival in 2012. The band have just wrapped a European and UK tour, and also played at Las Vegas’ Sick New World festival back in April.

    Four years ago, Georgia Godwin was at the peak of her powers as she led Australia to silver in the women's team final at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

    This time around, her first two rotations were just OK, aided by brilliant performances by Kate McDonald, whose 14.200 was the best uneven bars score of the day; and Breanna Scott on beam.

    They backed it up on the floor, with first Scott, then McDonald posting the day's second-best scores on the apparatus.

    Then Godwin reminded the world of her class with a stunning routine that earned her a 13.350 and left Australia in top spot with only the vault to come.

    With another haul of medals from the pool, Australia has widened the lead on the medal tally with a total of 17 gold medals, nine silver and 13 bronze.

    ‘Very sad day’: More than 200 jobs gone after sudden closure of Australia’s only manganese smelter

    Hundreds of jobs have been lost following the immediate shuttering of Australia’s only manganese smelter.

    Liberty Bell Bay, located in George Town in northern Tasmania, was ordered to close on Thursday by administrators after it failed to attract a buyer, despite a “tireless” effort to secure a serious offer.

    More than 200 people were employed at the smelter. Liberty Steel Group

    Administrator EY-Parthenon said it had entered into an agreement with a consortium to acquire the smelter.

    “In the absence of both a commercially viable transaction, and the funding required to continue operations, the administrators have made the difficult decision to commence the orderly closure of the business with immediate effect,” EY-Parthenon said in a statement.

    'Substantial clean-up effort' needed for shuttered manganese smelter

    Tasmanian government minister Felix Ellis says the shuttered Liberty Bell Bay will require "a substantial clean-up effort".

    The state's peak mining and mineral processing body says the closure leaves Australia more exposed to geopolitical risks.

    Mr Ellis says he is confident a $20 million loan from the state government to the smelter's former owner to purchase ore is recoverable.

    Australia's only manganese alloy smelter has closed, leaving the future of the site uncertain and the country more reliant on imported alloys for steel production.

    The beleaguered Liberty Bell Bay smelter, roughly 50 kilometres north of Launceston, produced an alloy from manganese ore called ferromanganese, a critical component of steelmaking with applications across defence, construction and mining.

    The United States expanded its air strike campaign against Iran early Friday by hitting more bridges and apparently collapsing a tower at a key Iranian port, part of US President Donald Trump's threats to start striking infrastructure to pressure Tehran to ease its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz. 

    The commercial tankers struck as they transited the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks were "highly, highly targeted", according to marine traffic watchers. 

    US bombards Iran in sixth-straight night of attacks

    US strikes continue on Iran; Malcolm Roberts crtiicised for antisemitic post; Specsavers, OPSM put patients before sales

    One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts accused the “mainstream media” of waging a campaign against him, declaring: “First they came for Pauline. Then they came for Barnaby. Now it’s my turn.” The Queensland senator said in a statement on Facebook that news reporting on his comments amounted to “selective cherry-picking and dishonest distortions” designed to protect the political “uniparty”.

    Sam Neill’s management confirmed that the much-loved actor died of pneumonia. Philip Grenz, Neill’s long-time representative, issued a statement because, he said, several media stories containing “inaccuracies and outright falsehoods” had circulated since news broke on Monday of the 78-year-old’s death in St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.
