‘Not going to be an issue’: Mikel Arteta relaxed about Arsenal contract situation

‘They don’t have to worry … I want to be here’

Mikel Arteta has said he is relaxed about his Arsenal contract expiring at the end of the new season and believes his side will need to be better than last year to defend their title successfully.

The Premier League champions will face Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff on Sunday and are heavy favourites to win back-to-back league titles for the first time since the 1930s. The departure of Pep Guardiola from their traditional rivals City means Arteta is now the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, with the Spaniard having joined in December 2019.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta not worried about contract talks with deal expiring in 2027

Mikel Arteta has said that supporters "don't have to worry about" his future at Arsenal as he wants to extend his contract and the time left on his deal is "not an issue".

The Gunners boss is into the final 12 months of his agreement that he signed in 2024 but says he is relaxed about formal talks taking place regarding a renewal.

Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since 2019 and led the club to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season.

Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday (15:00 BST) and Arteta was asked in his news conference about the concern some supporters may have given he is yet to agree a new deal before the 2026-27 campaign kicks off.

Mikel Arteta: Arsenal manager says he will sign new contract after entering the last year of his current deal

Mikel Arteta has entered the final year of his Arsenal contract having won the Premier League last season; Arteta: "I want to be here, I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with. We will resolve that"

Mikel Arteta has revealed he will sign a new Arsenal contract and there is no need for fans to be worried about his future.

Arteta has entered the final year of his contract with the Premier League champions – despite co-chairman Josh Kroenke saying in May that a new deal was an "upmost priority" of the club.

Tesla Semi European Push: France Hire Signals 2027 Launch Is Real

Tesla is quietly assembling the commercial infrastructure needed to sell its Semi truck in Europe, and the latest hiring move makes the 2027 target feel less like a projection and more like a plan. The company has brought on Jean-William Dubal as Business Development Manager for France — a role squarely focused on landing fleet customers before the truck even arrives on European soil.

The Semi's European story has been building steadily throughout 2025 and 2026. Tesla hired Usuf Schermo as Head of Business Development for the EMEA region back in April 2025 — the first concrete sign that Europe was more than a footnote in the Semi program. Then in June 2026, a Business Development Manager listing appeared for Parsdorf, near Munich, focused on securing fleet customers, managing truck configurations, and overseeing charging infrastructure for German-market operators. A supporting Fleet Coordinator role in Munich followed, dedicated to managing demonstration vehicles.

Tesla Semi heads to Europe in 2027: 805 km of range, 800 kW and 1.2 MW charging

Tesla is preparing to bring the Semi to the European market in 2027, but the date itself is not a fresh August announcement: Elon Musk was already talking about the electric truck’s European prospects back in February 2026. Something else is more interesting: the production Semi now has firm specifications, and they show how well the American concept fits European logistics.

According to Tesla’s current figures, the Semi comes in two versions. The Standard Range covers roughly 325 miles, or 523 km, while the Long Range manages 500 miles, about 805 km, and Tesla was quoting that figure well before volume output began. Both versions use three independent electric motors on the rear axles, and peak drive power reaches 800 kW, or around 1088 PS (1072 hp).

John Longmire opens up on booing during player’s final years

‘I should have threatened to pull our players off the ground’

Former Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has opened up on his regret for not doing more to support Adam Goodes in the final years of his career, as the two-time Brownlow medallist faced “diabolical, almost unforgivable” treatment.

Writing in his autobiography released this week, Longmire said the final years of Goodes’s career were a source of regret.

“I wish everyone had done more,” he said. “Adam Goodes was not just a champion footballer, he was a leader and a man of immense courage. What he endured was diabolical, almost unforgivable.”

‘Extreme act’ Swans coach regrets not doing amid Goodes booing

Former Sydney coach John Longmire regrets not doing more to support champion player Adam Goodes during the final years of his career where the dual Brownlow Medallist was booed relentlessly by fans around the country.

The 2012 premiership coach, in his autobiography: “Pain, Perspective and Premierships – My Autobiography”, went as far as saying the club should have staged a walk off during a game to send the message that they would no longer stand for what was happening.

Franco Baresi was not only the captain but the moral heart of great Milan team

The late centre-back defined an era of Italian defending and his collection of honours is eternal proof of his class

There are very few players who become bywords for their position, who enjoy universal acclaim. But for anybody who watched football in the late 80s or early 90s, Franco Baresi was the central defender. He was unsurpassed, obviously the best in his position in the world, the definition of the art of the defending. The oddity is, he really wasn’t like very many other defenders at all.

Baresi had just turned 19 when he won his first scudetto at Milan under Nils Liedholm. It was 1979 and Italian football was still dominated by the ideals of catenaccio. Most defences comprised a libero, two man-markers and, if you were lucky, an attacking left-back. But not Liedholm’s. The Swede was a pioneer in Serie A of zonal marking, and the idea that the game was not a series of physical battles but a question of space. Baresi was only 5ft 9in and a teenager. More traditional coaches might not have trusted him. But Liedholm saw an impeccable reader of the game, even at that age. Baresi was an ever-present, not only in the league but in the Coppa Italia and Uefa Cup as well.

Italy World Cup winner and AC Milan legend Franco Baresi dies aged 66

Franco Baresi, who won the World Cup with Italy and was regarded as one of football’s finest defenders, dies aged 66.

Franco Baresi, the former AC Milan captain who was one of Italy’s most acclaimed defenders, has died. He was 66.

His death was announced on Friday by Milan, the football club where he spent his entire 20-year playing career. No cause of death was given.

“The entire history of AC Milan is in tears,” Milan said.

In August 2025, Baresi underwent surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule and subsequently began a course of immunotherapy.

His last public appearance was at the opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February, when, along with former Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi, he carried the torch into the San Siro — the stadium he formerly played in.

My advice to Claudia Winkleman: it’s not you, it’s the giant sofa – try a different kind of chatshow | Fiona Sturges

The popular presenter is by no means the first to have come a cropper hosting a talkshow. But new formats provide new opportunities

You might think the TV chatshow is an easy format to get right. Hire a well-liked host with comic chops and some successful shows under their belt. Build a cheerful set with a big sofa in the middle. Book some A-list celebs plus the obligatory comedian, invite a live audience et voilà! A prime-time hit is surely born.

Except that time and time again, it has proved not to be that simple. Just ask Claudia Winkleman, who revealed last week that she won’t be returning to do a second season of The Claudia Winkleman Show on the BBC. The series, which launched in March, filling the gap while The Graham Norton Show was on hiatus, was received with lukewarm reviews and so-so ratings. The decision to call time on it is reported to be Winkleman’s – “I was just too nervous to enjoy it,” she admitted – though, given the cuts rippling through the corporation, she may have opted to jump before being pushed.

Claudia Winkleman’s chat show was doomed from the start

She's become the best presenter in British entertainment by hiding her ego. But chat shows need you to show off

It is very Claudia Winkleman to blame the failure of her chat show on herself. Usually when a TV programme flops or gets the heave-ho, the talent associated with it either get defensive and blame the schedule or the concept, or they never mention it again and hope everyone forgets about it.

But this is Winkleman, who has never turned down an opportunity for self-deprecation – when the series was announced last year she said, “I’m obviously going to be awful”. And so while her decision to call time on it, after only seven episodes that began in March, is a shock, her humility, vulnerability, and grace about it is precisely on-brand.

Bond, James Bond? Not quite, but this Kiwi comedy is a delightfully dry spin on spy thrillers

Lovers of endearingly mild-mannered New Zealanders being polite, careful and deadpan in risky, high-stakes circumstances, rejoice. New Zealand Spy is a six-part comedy series from New Zealand comedian, writer and musician Paul Williams (Taskmaster NZ), whose love of James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock films has engendered a deeply dry-witted retake on classic spy films.

Kicking off with the panache and adventure of any Bond movie, we meet Williams’ spy protagonist, Michael Brown (spy name: Michael Riviera), piste skiing in a pearly white snowsuit down a vast Queenstown slope chased by an Australian spy agency guard.

Brown is eventually trapped and his identity requested at gunpoint. Does he answer “Riviera, Michael Riviera”? No. What follows is an awkward silence as he tries to remember his undercover alias. A squabble ensues, the guard is perplexed and infuriated but we flash back to how Riviera became a spy a few weeks previously.

    New Zealand Spy: Trailer

New Zealand's newest spies – and the only three who applied – are tasked with protecting the nation from incoming threats, most notably from their noisy neighbours in Australia.

Battered but not broken Blues look to unleash mayhem in State of Origin decider | Angus Fontaine

But if Queensland pick up where they left off in game two, Billy Slater’s Maroons can condemn NSW to a fourth series loss in five years

Most league pundits have had New South Wales twisting in the wind since their 44-24 capitulation in Melbourne. The Blues have won only three deciders contested at Suncorp Stadium in the last 32 years and have lost 15 of 20 Origin matches played there. Laurie Daley has been in a position to wrap up a series nine times now – eight times he’s failed.

But this is Origin, where anything and everything can happen. Pilloried in the media, the Blues are battered but they aren’t broken, with fresh players bringing fresh hope. Queensland, unable to claim underdog status, have practised calm before the storm. In a city angry at their imploding Broncos, the stage is set for a Suncorp barnburner.

    Liam Martin is fired up

He’s known as a ‘wild dog’. But Liam Martin’s pre-game antics will surprise you

About the same time as 50,000 Queensland fans save their loudest boos for Liam Martin when his face is beamed on the big screen before kick-off on Wednesday night, the man himself will be following a strict pre-game ritual beneath Suncorp Stadium.

The TV cameras captured Martin sitting in the sheds with his eyes closed and meditating before a game against the Gold Coast Titans a few weeks ago.

Commentators had a laugh at the vision, while even his mates were quick to ridicule him via text message.

How is it one of rugby league’s wildest and most physical players – the man regularly dubbed “grub” by the Queenslanders, and “wild dog” by his own teammates – could appear so at peace just moments before a game?
