Lanterns review – Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre’s alien-hunting superhero caper is a bust

Sure, it’s got evil extraterrestrials trying to detonate whole towns … but not even the almighty Green Lantern and his mesmerising protege can save this show from feeling a whole lot of meh

It is my personal belief that you are starting off on the back foot whenever you’re given a superhero who draws their powers from an extrinsic item. Captain America is nothing without his shield. Elon Musk could build a metal suit and proto-heart and become Iron Man, which tells you everything you need to know about the problem. And, most pertinently, as we’re about to discuss the latest iteration of the Green Lantern legend, there’s the Green Lantern and his big green ring. It grants the wearer mighty powers but periodically needs recharging from a big green power pack. Plus, Green Lanterns themselves are ultimately employees of Green Lantern Corps, a cosmic law enforcement agency run by the Guardians. They are a race of immortals who live on the planet Oa, but by that point there’s a lot of meh to cut your way through.

I’m not really into traumatic superhero stories, but Lanterns had me in its grip

Superheroes and mortals alike return to the same question in HBO Max’s gritty, psychological take on DC’s Green Lantern franchise: “Are you afraid?”

The three words become a mantra for John Stewart (Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge; The Morning Show), a Lantern-in-training assigned to follow around Earth’s long-standing Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights). Together, they investigate a strange shooting in Nevada with suspected intergalactic links.

Without mental resolve, these intergalactic law officers can’t use their weapons – a magical emerald green ring that lets them fly and create objects, force fields and more out of sheer mind power. But fear itself is the powering force of Lanterns, a show that examines how it is used to justify acts of love, war and hatred across interpersonal relationships and intergalactic colonialism alike.

HBO Max Scores Big With New 91-Minute 'John Wick' Substitute Action Thriller

James Melzer is a Senior Staff Writer at MovieWeb, working remotely from Pennsylvania. He covers the hottest entertainment news, as well as the latest and greatest in streaming from around the world. James has been a regular staple at MovieWeb for almost three years, writing everything from lists and features, to breaking news and movie reviews.

Before joining MovieWeb, James covered pop culture news for a variety of different media sites, including Manolith and Real TV Addict. He also hosted a successful audio podcast, where he interviewed everyone from authors and artists, to screenwriters and actors.

Three days after its streaming debut, HBO Max has found their newest hit with an action thriller that takes all the hard-hitting action of the John Wick franchise and drops it into a small Minnesota town. One could even go so far as to call it a John Wick substitute when you take into account that it was created by Derek Kolstad, who is the screenwriter responsible for bringing Keanu Reeves' action franchise to life in 2014.

HBO Max Quietly Adds Certified Fresh Neo-Western Thriller Starring Bob Odenkirk

Bob Odenkirk has built quite the illustrious career in Hollywood, earning Emmys, a Peabody Award, and a host of award nominations. While he's been in several films and TV shows over the years, his most notable role is, without a doubt, portraying Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Well, in April of this year, he starred in a film as an interim sheriff who's determined to get to the bottom of a explosive mystery plaguing a small town. Classified as a new-Western action comedy thriller (a mouthful), it wowed both critics and fans, and now it's streaming on HBO Max for subscribers.

Bob Odenkirk's Underrated 2026 Action Movie Is A Must-Watch On HBO Max

Bob Odenkirk's late-career action endeavors have been pretty impressive. 2026's "Normal" is no different and is available to stream on HBO Max right now.

Typically, when a well-established star makes a career turn towards action movies of a certain kind, it's a bad omen. The Old Man Liam Neeson action oeuvre, for example, has given us some great films, but on the whole it's been one "Taken" clone after another. So, when Odenkirk suddenly emerged as a John Wick-esque badass in 2021's "Nobody," it didn't seem like the most auspicious development.

Thankfully, the film turned out to be more than your standard action B-movie. /Film's Chris Evangelista might have dismissed "Nobody" as a disappointing "John Wick" clone, and in many ways it was. But that wasn't necessarily surprising considering the movie was written by "John Wick" scribe Derek Kolstad and produced by "John Wick" co-director David Leitch, whose 87North Productions also oversaw Odenkirk's action debut. Despite the unmistakable John Wick stamp, however, "Nobody" at least tried to have some fun with Odenkirk's everyman aura and apparent lack of action bonafides, giving it an edge over your typical Jason Statham-style hardman outing.

Lanterns Season 1 First Reviews: A Mature, Grounded Mystery and One of DC's Best Shows Yet

The DC Universe continues on the small screen with Lanterns, a new superhero series debuting on HBO this weekend, and the first reviews are now online. Based on the Green Lantern comics, the show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two human members of an intergalactic law enforcement agency who wear “power rings” that give them extraordinary abilities. As R-rated as Peacemaker but much more grounded than anything else we’ve seen from James Gunn’s take on the franchise, this fantastical detective procedural may work as its own thing, but it also might prove divisive among the comic book loyal.

'Lanterns' Review: Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre Shine in HBO Series

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King created the series, in which Hal Jordan and John Stewart bicker more than they kick intergalactic butt.

Jack Reacher, protagonist of books by Lee Child and an ongoing Amazon drama, has several characteristics integral to his Jack Reacher-ness.

Of primary importance to Child’s readers, Jack Reacher is gigantic. If Jack Reacher isn’t 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, he might as well be Tom Cruise in a muscle car, because he sure isn’t Jack Reacher.

Of subtler importance, albeit more complicated to discuss, is Jack Reacher’s whiteness. Reacher is a behemoth who strolls into towns in the South and the American heartland. He’s a vagrant who picks fights in public places, undermines law enforcement, beds random women and refuses to leave before unraveling mid-level conspiracies. Many, if not all, of Jack Reacher’s adventures would play out wildly differently if he were a 6-foot-5, 250-pound man of color.

Mourinho review – if he didn’t want to open up, maybe he shouldn’t have starred in a docuseries…

Football manager José Mourinho stars in a three-parter from the creators of Bros: After the Screaming Stops. Don’t expect it to be quite so entertaining…

Among his previous credits, the director of this mini-series Joe Pearlman can count the revelatory and hilarious 2018 film, Bros: After the Screaming Stops. That documentary worked brilliantly because its subjects seemed so sweetly but devastatingly lacking in discretion or self-awareness that everything they said landed like a line from a Christopher Guest parody. They couldn’t help themselves.

In terms of a character study, storied football manager José Mourinho is a very different kettle of cold fish. Like the Goss twins, he takes himself very seriously indeed, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. He’s something of a closed book. “You are pushing me to speak about myself,” he says, towards the end of the final part of this series. “And I don’t want to.” Which is fair enough but it does beg the question: why then, would you agree to be the subject of an in-depth three part documentary series?

Operation Safed Sagar Review: Eye In The Sky, Feet On Ground

Operation Safed Sagar's prime purpose may be to honour IAF warriors but it is an inadvertent reminder of how we went from a nation of Jung na hone denge to Ghar mein ghus ke marenge, observes Sukanya Verma.

The Indian defence forces deserve accolades for winning against all odds during the 1999 Kargil war, after fighting at high altitudes and tough terrains with aging equipment while heeding diplomatic guidelines against an adversary whose strategic advantage gave them an upper hand.

Quite a few movies like Lakshya, LoC-Kargil and Shershaah have fictionalised the battle on ground as part of Operation Vijay.

The focus now shifts to the contributions of the Indian Air Force in Operation Safed Sagar.

For more than two decades globally, Live Nation’s ONES TO WATCH has built its reputation on identifying tomorrow’s headline acts before the rest of the industry catches up. Big Walk review – larking around with mates elevated to an artform

Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PC; House HouseThe creators of Untitled Goose Game return with an online, open-world adventure that delivers slapstick silliness and bucolic majesty in nearly equal measure

Radiant sunsets glinting on lapping waves; bushland valleys that beckon with secrets; modernist buildings sat atop craggy ridges: Big Walk’s setting is as arresting as it is beguiling – a kind of architectural fever dream transplanted to a handsome Australian wilderness – but it is the images created by players that lodge deepest in the mind. Here’s one that has stuck with me: in the black of night, cicadas kicking up an almighty din, I had lost my partner. Panic. Despair. Fear. Then, there in the far distance, I saw him signalling in my direction. He was relentlessly spamming a gigantic, ball-shaped lamp on and off, the ground around him flicking from inky dark to warm pastel pink and back again, like a single Christmas light blinking from afar.

Big Walk review – House House's collaborative puzzle quest takes the hangout game to a new peak

What is Big Walk, exactly? It's a simple game, really, but explaining what's special about it is a little more complicated. For starters, you might wonder if the latest game from Melbourne-based House House is anything like its breakthrough. Well, it certainly shares the gleeful devilment of its biggest hit. There are no geese here, though your colourful avatars do have a somewhat birdlike quality; big or small, that nose is slightly beakish. It's equally smart in the way it wields its silliness, similarly playful and exuberant, and stuffed with innumerable delightful little touches. Otherwise, it's not much like Untitled Goose Game at all.

Big Walk Is for the Italians

Growing up as a kid with a rebellious streak, there was a time in my life when I tried to resist my Italian heritage. My father was born in Abruzzo, and I was always close to Italian culture as a result, but I spent years trying to distance myself from it. It was a futile resistance. I couldn’t help but absorb cultural quirks from my father and his friends. I never realized that until the first time someone noted how much I talk with my hands. I felt like a walking stereotype at the time, but I’ve since come to embrace the theatrical way I communicate. Nothing emphasizes your frustration like an impassioned flick of the wrists.

    Ariana Grande: petal Album Review

Ariana Grande’s much-scrutinized drift into a higher vocal register in recent years, to hear her tell it, is an act of self-preservation. “If I have a long day of press or I have to sing, I’ll place [my voice] a little higher,” she explained on a podcast in 2025. “That is just something that’s healthy for the voice.” As one of the most visible pop stars on the planet, she’s become adept at shielding herself: Take the oversized hoodies she frequently wore on pap walks in 2018, which she described as reflecting her desire to “hide away” as she navigated the overwhelming combined grief of the 2017 terrorist attack on her arena show in Manchester and the death of Mac Miller. Or the way she seemed to continue to perform the peppy, pink-hued role of Glinda off-screen during the back-to-back Wicked press tours in 2024 and 2025. All to say, when it comes to Grande, what seems light and carefree can also be a carefully constructed form of armor.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Petal’ Introduces an Angry and Angular Ari: Album Review

On the surface, Ariana Grande’s “Petal” is a sister album to its predecessor, 2024’s “Eternal Sunshine” — it was made with the same two collaborators, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Max Martin, and it also was entirely written, performed and produced by the three of them. Usually, that formula means a chapter two: more of the same but different.

Not this time. This sister is darker, moodier and a lot more blunt than “Sunshine,” and her emotions are more volatile, less heartbroken, and much less internalized. It’s a different Ariana, musically and especially lyrically.

Grande braced her fans for a change in a widely circulated interview earlier this week. “I think [fans] will feel familiarity and comfort in it,” she said of the album. “Yet at the same time it’s very experimental and different for me, and also I wrote from a place that I don’t usually, which is unfiltered rage,” she laughed. “I usually am too shy to tap into that, and I think this time I didn’t filter as much as I usually do.”
