How this tiny town welcomed a 70-piece orchestra

The Sydney Youth Orchestras share their knowledge with the Wilcannia locals.  (Sydney Youth Orchestras: Craig Proudford)

The rugged landscape of rural New South Wales is unfamiliar to 15-year-old violinist Demeil.

Travelling through the outback on a bus, it's the first time he's experiencing the brown dirt turn a deep red, and the trees grow hardy.

He's leaving the city behind to journey with the Sydney Youth Orchestras on its Big Sky tour into remote areas, collaborating with local performers along the way.

It's almost 11 hours on the bus before they reach their destination. (Sydney Youth Orchestras: Craig Proudford)

The Sydney Youth Orchestras, which has served as a stepping stone for young musicians for more than five decades, is sharing its talents to help bridge the divide between city and country through music.

    Back Roads: April 16

Jeremy Fernandez is guest presenter this week on Back Roads on a musical journey as two groups of young Australians from completely different worlds come together in the New South Wales outback.

The Sydney Youth Orchestras — Australia’s premier training ground for the next generation of classical musicians — leave the bustle of the big city for the wide skies and dusty roads of Wilcannia, a small Barkindji community on the banks of the Darling River.

There, they join forces with the Wilcannia Children’s Choir, a remarkable group of young singers who are proudly keeping their traditional language and culture alive. For the kids from the bush, it’s a rare opportunity not just to see an orchestra, but to perform with one — and to share their culture with new friends.

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the Nasdaq-100 index, which holds a high concentration of technology stocks, recently declined from its peak. During a broader market downturn, this index fell more sharply than the S&P 500.

Amid economic uncertainty linked to geopolitical events affecting energy markets, some investors have reduced their equity holdings. Historically, such market declines have presented investment opportunities, particularly within the high-growth technology sector.

The Vanguard Information Technology ETF provides exposure exclusively to the information technology sector. The fund holds hundreds of stocks, but its portfolio is heavily concentrated in four of the largest U.S. companies by market value: Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Broadcom. Together, these four holdings represent nearly half of the ETF's total portfolio value.

Vanguard ETFs April 14: Buy the Dip During Market Selloff

Vanguard ETFs are capturing investor attention as markets face significant headwinds on April 14, 2026. The Nasdaq-100 has fallen as much as 12% from its all-time high during the recent broad market sell-off, while the S&P 500 declined by a lesser 9%. This divergence highlights the vulnerability of concentrated tech portfolios. Investors are increasingly asking whether now is the time to buy Vanguard ETFs, particularly those focused on technology and diversified exposure. With geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising economic uncertainty, many are trimming stock exposure. However, historical data suggests market corrections often present compelling buying opportunities for long-term investors willing to stay disciplined.

“This,” says Fiona Copeman, the hub manager of the Malabar wastewater treatment plant, “is what you would call our four-bus area.”

Copeman is gesturing to a model of the plant on a table inside the facility itself. She’s referring to a 300 cubic metre underground chamber that houses, as Guardian Australia revealed in January, a “fatberg the size of four buses that likely birthed poo balls that closed Sydney beaches”.

Sydney-Wollongong commuters finally get start date for new intercity trains

After a five-year delay, NSW’s multibillion-dollar fleet of new Mariyung trains will start carrying passengers on the South Coast rail line between Kiama and Sydney from next Tuesday, raising commuters’ hopes of more reliable and frequent services.

The new intercity fleet will be progressively rolled out on the line over the next year, starting with seven trains of four and six carriages, before longer eight and 10-car sets enter service during peak periods.

All 16 new trains to eventually be used on the line will terminate at Sydney’s Central Station – like those used on the Blue Mountains and Newcastle lines – partly because 10-carriage trains are too long to stop at platforms on the underground line between Redfern and Bondi Junction. The longest Mariyung trains also cannot be turned around at Bondi Junction.

The Mariyung Fleet will start carrying passengers on the South Coast line from Tuesday – five years after originally scheduled.

The fleet was originally slated to be in service in 2021 but a range of issues including ordering more carriages, the need for infrastructure upgrades and conflict with rail unions pushed back the delivery date.

The first Mariyung passenger service will leave Kiama Station at 7.56am on Tuesday, April 14, heading for Central Station.

Meryl Streep ignites ‘Mamma Mia 3' frenzy

Meryl Streep has reignited the conversation around Mamma Mia 3 with a single, emphatic phrase.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Oscar-winning actress was asked if she would return for another installment of the beloved ABBA musical franchise.

The clip quickly went viral across social media, with fans celebrating the possibility of Donna Sheridan’s return.

The moment was particularly striking given that Streep’s character was written as deceased in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018).

Streep’s declaration came at a time when her co-stars have also been voicing enthusiasm for a third film.

Amanda Seyfried has repeatedly said it would be “silly” not to make another, longing for a reunion on the Greek island that has become synonymous with the franchise’s joy.

This controversial rom-com starring Zendaya is one of the best movies of the year

A revealed transgression spells trouble for a soon-to-be-wed couple in The Drama. (Supplied: VVS Films)

What: A happily engaged couple’s wedding plans are rocked by an explosive revelation

Likely to make you feel: Unsettled … in the best possible way

Despite appearances to the contrary, the wildly unpredictable new A24 film The Drama is anything but a traditional romantic comedy, even if it tangles with modern love in darkly funny ways.

Norwegian arthouse director Kristoffer Borgli's latest American foray — starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose forthcoming nuptials hit an unexpected snag — is best seen with as little prior knowledge as possible, in order to let its rollercoaster emotional twists catch you off guard.

The Drama review – Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s controversial wedding film delivers on its promise

A woman’s confession on the eve of her nuptials causes uproar in this insouciantly offensive provocation from the director of Dream Scenario

How much of your past should you reveal to your adorable fiance before the big day? Very tricky issues are probably best avoided in the run-up to the ceremony, but can still be recklessly raised by attractively naive young people who assume the worms surely can’t be that big or plentiful – or difficult to get back into the can.

Such a situation is the centre of this contrived but amusing high-concept, high-anxiety movie from Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli; a Euro-satire of American bourgeois aspiration that sets out to discomfit and excruciate in the spirit of Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure or Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen.

'Some will be appalled': The Drama's horrifying twist is set to divide audiences

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson's new film about a soon-to-be married couple is a romcom with a disturbing difference. The result is 2026's "first great cinematic conversation-starter".

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson haven't shied away from contentious material in the past, from Zendaya's breakthrough role in Euphoria to Pattinson's role in… well, pretty much everything he's done since the Twilight franchise. But their new film, The Drama, is sure to be the most divisive project to feature either of them. Some viewers will love it, and some will be appalled, despite it being, on one level, a romantic comedy about pre-wedding jitters.

But she has shown no signs of it so far, with the Australian in a strong position to add another trophy to her cabinet with a two-stroke lead at the end of the third round on Saturday.

Green entered the event ranked No.7 in the world, just two away from her career-high ranking of five, and hit four-under to finish the day 14-under, two strokes ahead of both Switzerland’s Vanessa Knecht and South Africa’s Casandra Alexander.

Hannah Green is one decent round away from completing a Nelly Korda-like feat after retaining a two-shot lead at the Australian WPGA Championship in Queensland.

A second straight 67 vaulted Green to 14 under par entering the final round as Australia's world No.7 chases a rare hat-trick of tour victories on Sunday at Gold Coast's Sanctuary Cove course.

Green will be odds on to add the Karrie Webb Cup to the Australian Open crown she won last week in Adelaide and the Women's World Championship in Singapore, which was her seventh LPGA title.

‘I’m Not Doing This!’ Piers Morgan Ends Interview After Manosphere Influencer Brings Up His Wife’s Pool Boy Joke

Piers Morgan’s interview with a “Manosphere” influencer came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when the streamer flashed a picture of Morgan’s wife lounging by the pool in her bathing suit.

The bizarre moment happened about 15 minutes into an interview Morgan was doing with Harrison Sullivan, who is better known as “HSTikkyTokky” on TikTok and other social platforms. Things were already a bit tense before the conversation went completely off the rails when Sullivan mocked the host for a picture his wife Celia Walden posted on Instagram.

Piers Morgan Wife image sparks walkout — host ends interview after guest shows photo

SHOCK OPENING: One live interview collapsed in minutes when a guest displayed a photograph he said depicted the host’s partner, prompting Piers Morgan to walk off set; the episode reframes how confrontational interviews play out in livestreamed formats and raises questions about boundary lines when a presenter’s family is pulled into debate. The phrase piers morgan wife became central to the clash on-screen.

Verified fact: Piers Morgan, presenter and host of the show Piers Morgan: Uncensored, invited Harrison Sullivan, known online as HSTikkyTokky, to appear on his live-streaming channel for a discussion about the documentary Inside the Manosphere by Louis Theroux.

Piers Morgan walks off own show during heated interview with HSTikkyTokky

Piers Morgan appears to have walked off his own show this evening (18 March) as he interviewed subjects from the recent manosphere documentary.

But the 24-year-old (whose real name is Harrison Sullivan) seems to have absolutely riled the 60-year-old up as he said it was ‘pointless’ and said he’s ‘not doing this’.
