Researchers from Stanford University have synthesised brand-new, self-replicating viruses using genomes designed by artificial intelligence for the first time.

The viruses, designed by AI models trained on genetic code from other viruses as well as more complex organisms, were able to replicate inside E. coli bacteria, demonstrating their viability.

The breakthrough could potentially lead to significant medical advances but has also raised concerns the technology could be misused to create powerful bioweapons.

US researchers have for the first time successfully synthesised brand-new viruses not found in nature, based on designs generated by artificial intelligence.

‘This quarter was otherworldly’: Palantir earnings surge past expectations

Shares soar as yearly revenue up 93%, even as opposition grows to company’s role in Trump immigration agenda

In a sea of companies reporting mixed financial results this quarter, Palantir stands out. Although Palantir was not immune to the AI jitters that caused industry-wide drops in share prices earlier this year, the AI and analytics company reported that its overall revenue grew 93% year over year to $1.94bn. That’s well over the $1.8bn Wall Street expected Palantir to bring in for the second quarter.

The glowing financials sparked a 10% surge in share prices in the immediate aftermath. Despite growing opposition to Palantir’s work with various governments including the crucial role the company plays in the Trump administration’s immigration agenda, the company’s revenue from US government contracts grew 90% year over year to $809m.

Tech giant Palantir posts ‘otherworldly’ growth despite criticism over Gaza

Second-quarter revenue jumped 93 percent but Palantir’s ties to Israel and role in military technology are controversial.

United States artificial intelligence and data analytics giant Palantir Technologies has reported “otherworldly” quarterly results, sending its shares more than 14 percent higher in after-hours trading, as its growth shows no signs of slowing despite mounting criticism over its close ties to the US and Israeli governments and concerns about its growing role in artificial intelligence and warfare.

Palantir Technologies reported a revenue of $1.94bn for the second quarter, up 93 percent from a year earlier, and raised its forecast annual revenue to between $8.15bn and $8.158bn, up from $7.65bn to $7.662bn earlier. It said strong demand from both commercial customers and government agencies drove the surge.

    Palantir’s Stock Paces Best Day In A Year—Here’s Why It’s Up 20%

Palantir’s stock skyrocketed by nearly 30% on Tuesday after reporting “otherworldly” revenue growth through its latest quarter, reversing course for the enterprise software firm, whose shares have plunged so far this year amid broader concerns about the AI market.

Shares of Palantir surged 29.8% as of Tuesday afternoon, pacing the stock’s largest single-day gain since Feb. 6, 2024 (up 30.8%).

Palantir on Monday reported quarterly revenue of $1.9 billion and earnings per share of $0.41, far surpassing estimates of $1.8 billion and $0.34, respectively, according to FactSet.

A 93% year-over-year boost in overall revenue was largely driven by a 149% surge in commercial revenue to $764 million, while government revenue jumped 90% to $809 million.

This show is like James Bond, except it’s a comedy set in New Zealand

Rose Matafeo, Joe Thomas and Paul Williams star as three hapless spies, guided by their boss, Bret McKenzie. (Supplied: ABC TV)

As a young boy growing up in Nelson, Aotearoa/New Zealand, he would rent out a different James Bond film every week from the video shop. And the obsession didn't end with childhood.

"It's weird I even remember it, but when I was 16, I had this blog that no-one followed, and I remember writing: 'I'm going to be James Bond one day, just you wait'," Williams laughs.

He's the creator, writer and star of new comedy TV series, New Zealand Spy.

Bond, James Bond? Not quite, but this Kiwi comedy is a delightfully dry spin on spy thrillers

Lovers of endearingly mild-mannered New Zealanders being polite, careful and deadpan in risky, high-stakes circumstances, rejoice. New Zealand Spy is a six-part comedy series from New Zealand comedian, writer and musician Paul Williams (Taskmaster NZ), whose love of James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock films has engendered a deeply dry-witted retake on classic spy films.

Kicking off with the panache and adventure of any Bond movie, we meet Williams’ spy protagonist, Michael Brown (spy name: Michael Riviera), piste skiing in a pearly white snowsuit down a vast Queenstown slope chased by an Australian spy agency guard.

Brown is eventually trapped and his identity requested at gunpoint. Does he answer “Riviera, Michael Riviera”? No. What follows is an awkward silence as he tries to remember his undercover alias. A squabble ensues, the guard is perplexed and infuriated but we flash back to how Riviera became a spy a few weeks previously.

110km to go: With the day’s four climbs conquered, the pack head back through Chambery, a few miles south of where they started. ‘I’m gonna die of this’: Socceroos icon reveals devastating diagnosis

Socceroos legend Paul Wade has revealed he’s been diagnosed with probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The 64-year-old, who captained Australia’s national men’s team and played 84 games in the coveted strip, released a statement through the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday.

“Football gave me so much. It gave me a life, a career, incredible experiences and the privilege of representing Australia,” he said.

“But I also must be honest about the challenges I now face and the uncertainty that comes with living with a neurodegenerative condition.

Former captain of the Socceroos, Paul Wade, has revealed a diagnosis of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy, otherwise known as CTE.

Wade says the neurodegenerative brain disease linked to repeated impacts to the head, which can only be confirmed after death, was first suspected in 2024.

The 64-year-old hopes sharing his experience will raise awareness about concussion and brain health.

Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has announced he has been diagnosed with "probable" chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which has been linked to repeated head knocks and injuries.

In a statement put out by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday, Wade said he was diagnosed in late 2024 with a suspected case of the disease after experiencing neurological symptoms.

‘I’m gonna die of this’: The hidden cost of former Socceroos captain’s greatest gift

For as long as he can remember, former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has had a gift.

When he was 11 years old, newly arrived in Australia from England, he realised he could head a football harder, cleaner and more accurately than the other kids he would play with.

“Goalkeepers always kicked the ball into the air back then. Nobody threw it out,” he said.

“And because I was in midfield, I was probably one of the very few that was willing to head it. Right from the start, I knew I could head a ball – even if it was on the top of my head, where it hurt.

‘Something is wrong with this place’: Kelty slams state of economy

Labor luminary and former ACTU boss Bill Kelty has slammed the quality of economic management in Australia, saying taxes and spending are too high, and there is “something really wrong” when living standards are falling at the same time commodity prices are booming.

Kelty let fly in a written submission to a parliamentary inquiry into legislation to manage the nationwide distribution of cash, which has been the subject of a lengthy row between the banks and Armaguard, which is two-thirds owned by Linfox.

'This Creature': Olivia Wilde Slams Elon Musk Over 'Incel' Misogyny

Olivia Wilde has accused Elon Musk of embodying a strain of 'incel' misogyny and said she now 'deeply resents' the tech billionaire, recalling a meeting with him at SpaceX's Los Angeles headquarters years before his high-profile political turn.

In a fresh interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast, Wilde reflects on how men in positions of power shape culture and politics, and how that thinking threads through her recent work.

The actor and director has been promoting her new film The Invite while revisiting the controversies and debates around her 2022 psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, which she says was partly fueled by concerns about misogynistic ideology bleeding into mainstream life and electoral politics.

Olivia Wilde did not hold back about her feelings on Elon Musk in a recent interview.

The actress and director, whose current movie, The Invite, is now in theaters, appeared on The Louis Theroux Podcast on Tuesday, July 21. The 42-year-old Hollywood star opened up about meeting the tech trillionaire over a decade ago, and how Elon Musk and other right-wing figures like Jordan Peterson inspired Chris Pine's villainous character in her 2022 thriller Don't Worry Darling.

Olivia Wilde Recalls Meeting Elon Musk ‘Before He Turned Into This Creature’

“I really resent him now, I really deeply resent him,” the actress-director behind “The Invite” says

Olivia Wilde is remembering a meeting she had with Elon Musk “before he turned into this creature” and began stumping for MAGA and Donald Trump.

On Monday’s episode of “The Louis Theroux Podcast,” the “Invite” director-actress went into detail about a meeting she took with Musk after SpaceX set up their headquarters in Los Angeles.

She said she went to the meeting because “I wanted to see the rocket ships,” while Musk was supposedly curious about donating to a charity, with which Wilde worked, that supported Haiti by building schools and hospitals. She revealed that Musk did end up donating some money to the cause, but also noted that their interaction left Wilde “kind of confused by him.”

This Is the Tomorrowland Belgium 2026 Mainstage: Consciencia

Get a first glimpse of the breathtaking centerpiece of Tomorrowland Belgium 2026.

Over the course of two magical weekends, Tomorrowland and its iconic Mainstage will welcome around 400,000 People of Tomorrow from more than 200 countries, uniting music lovers from every corner of the world.

Here, legendary artists such as Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Hardwell, and many more will help bring this year’s story to life.

The 'Consciencia' MainStage is the largest and most ambitious stage ever created for Tomorrowland. Standing over 43 meters tall and stretching an impressive 140 meters wide, it features 56 lasers, 38 fountains, and two majestic waterfalls.

At its heart are six monumental heads, each representing one of the six primal emotions that form the core of the Consciencia universe.

Apple, Amazon Lock In Festival Streaming Rights as Platform Battle Heats Up

When Tomorrowland opens its gates in Belgium tomorrow, the audience inside De Schorre will number around 200,000. The audience tuning in will be orders of magnitude larger — and for the first time, that digital audience is not an afterthought. It is the product.

Two announcements published last Wednesday by music-industry analyst Stuart Dredge at Music Ally captured the moment: on the same day, Apple Music confirmed it would stream Tomorrowland's stages live through its Club Live broadcast series, and Amazon Music announced its return to Japan for a third year of exclusive Fuji Rock Festival broadcasts. Together, the deals illustrate something Dredge put plainly: "We're entering an era where the biggest, sold-outest festivals use livestreams as a core part of their strategy to reach larger audiences online, and build their brands globally."

The Westies review – this violent New York mob drama is like Peaky Blinders meets The Sopranos

Expect bloody chaos in this drama about a real-life 80s Irish-American gang – featuring JK Simmons as a gang leader – and their dealings with an Italian-American crime family

The Peaky Blinders effect lingers on. More than a decade after Tommy Shelby’s debut, TV still loves a real-life gangster crew, especially with Blinders creator Steven Knight having recently repeated the based-on-truth trick with A Thousand Blows. What other IRL historical crime crews are still available? All this time, the Westies, an Irish-American gang operating in 1980s New York in a fractious alliance with the Italian-American Gambino crime family, were right there. It’s the Irish mafia and the actual mafia in a two-for-one deal.

Rise and fall of 'The Westies,' New York's last Irish gang, as new series charts their murders and shakedowns

Thousands of families visit the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center every year for events like the Westminster dog show, Comic Con and International Auto Show.

Very few of them realize the blood spilled, extortion extracted and dead bodies connected with the exhibition space, as it rose from the ashes of former rail-yards to host such jazzy gatherings.

During construction between 1979 through 1986 and in the early years of operation, the burgeoning Center on the very West end of 34th Street was a cash cow for New York’s criminal elite.

It also limned the rise and fall of a violent Hell’s Kitchen-based Irish gang, the Westies. Those gangsters and the Javits Center play key roles in a new scripted crime series, “The Westies,” premiering July 12 on MGM+.
