Why anarchist thriller V for Vendetta, 20 this month, is as relevant as ever

Political dissent, societal control, a devastating virus: 20 years on, V for Vendetta looks less like a film than a prescient warning

.css-1mniedq{color:inherit;font-weight:inherit;font-size:inherit;font-family:inherit;line-height:inherit;}This is the latest instalment in our From the Vault feature series, in which we reflect on culturally significant movies celebrating notable anniversaries.

As a movie, V for Vendetta is far from perfect. But viewed today, 20 years after its cinema release, its existence feels nothing short of miraculous.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Hollywood studios were reluctant to make anything that could be considered politically incendiary. A few years later, however, films such as War of the Worlds (2005) and United 93 (2006) began to grapple with that terrible legacy.

Sporting CP claim 3-0 victory over Estoril behind Luis Suarez’s brilliant brace in Primeira Liga Matchday 2…

Sporting CP defeated Estoril 3-0 in Primeira Liga Matchday 24, with Luis Suarez playing a decisive role through a brilliant brace that guided the hosts to victory at Estadio Jose Alvalade. The forward opened the scoring and doubled the advantage, setting the tone early in a match controlled by Sporting CP from start to finish.

Sporting CP showed attacking efficiency and composure throughout the game, building their advantage through organized possession and constant pressure in the final third. Estoril attempted to respond, especially during key stretches of the match, but struggled to break through a disciplined defensive structure.

The victory was sealed late in the match when Daniel Braganca added a third goal, confirming Sporting CP’s dominance and securing three important points in the title race. With this result, Sporting CP continue applying pressure at the top of the Primeira Liga standings.

Sporting CP v Estoril: title push meets top-half surge

Sporting CP face Estoril in Liga Portugal at Estádio José Alvalade on Friday, 27 February 2026, with the hosts pressing the title race and the visitors seeking to strengthen their top-half position.

Sporting CP won 1-0 away in September and come in second with 58 points. Estoril sit seventh on 33 and have climbed the table in recent weeks, but recent head to heads have largely favoured the Lisbon side.

The Leões are unbeaten in their last five league games, including a 3-0 win at Moreirense. Estoril have three wins in five, capped by a 3-1 victory over Gil Vicente, though a 3-0 loss at AVS showed their vulnerability on the road.

This ‘new’ SBS doco is great. But to one filmmaker, it’s oddly familiar

SBS’s series about conman John Friedrich is fascinating, but to Philippe Charluet, it looks a lot like a project he submitted to SBS years ago.

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

The integrity of SBS’ commissioning process has been called into question by a veteran filmmaker who claims the documentary Australia’s Greatest Conman?, the first part of which airs on Tuesday, bears an uncanny resemblance to a project he submitted to the network on three separate occasions in the late 2000s.

Philippe Charluet, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years, on Sunday went public with his assertion that the two-part program about John Friedrich, the former head of the National Safety Council of Australia, which went belly-up in 1989 owing around $300 million, bore striking similarities to a project his company repeatedly submitted to the broadcaster as it sought a pre-sale that would help secure finance to bring the project to fruition.

"It's pretty wild": Marc Fennell on the mystery of fraudster John Friedrich

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Marc Fennell investigates John Friedrich's possible motives in 'Australia’s Greatest Conman?' on SBS and SBS On Demand.

When Walkley Award-winning journalist and presenter Marc Fennell looks around for a head-spinning crime story, he’s usually focused on the bigger picture.

The Mission was hung on an art heist in which 26 works were stolen from a former orphanage. But the show was less about the crime, and more about the unimaginably dark history of that woe-begotten place.

His latest docuseries, the two-part Australia’s Greatest Conman, shares some of the bones of that story.

You almost have to wonder if Network Ten saw the backlash coming. After the controversial sacking of longtime Australian Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia last year, the theme of this new season, “Redemption”, feels a little on the nose.

“The want to right your wrongs. The need to make your mark. And to turn your greatest failures into your greatest success.” These first words, gravely purred by new host and past winner David Genat as the sun sets over a Samoan beach, are as much about the show as they are about the 24 new contestants.

Fans threaten to boycott after new Survivor host’s debut

Survivor Australia fans have threatened to switch off the latest season entirely after new host and former player David Genat made his controversial hosting debut on Monday night.

In June, it was announced long-time host and fan favourite Jonathan LaPaglia had been sensationally dumped after almost ten years at the helm — remarkably, before his eleventh season had even aired.

After much speculation as to who would replace him, model and Survivor all-star Genat — nicknamed the Golden God — was revealed as his successor.

Following the first episode of Australian Survivor: Redemption on Monday, fans were quick to blast the show, and even threatened to boycott it altogether over the polarising casting decision.

Australian Survivor premiere drops for 10

Australian Survivor has taken a hit from the tribe in its first outing with new host David Genat.

Last night the refreshed reality show drew 464,000 viewers in National TV Audience, down on its February 2025 number of 527,000 with former host Jonathan LaPaglia.

There would be other factors at play including the power of Married at First Sight at 1.87m (from the same production company ESA) -but Survivor was also against MAFS last February.

7:30 was high at 918,000 then Australian Idol (762,000) and an unscheduled episode of Australian Story (641,000) which was changed by ABC for “editorial” reasons.

Later Media Watch was 596,000 then Four Corners (585,000), a Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony repeat (359,000) 911 (322,000) and Matlock (139,000).

'I don't mean this in a disrespectful way': What Tassie gun plans to do to cocky English opponent

Tasmania's Rob Wilkinson is confident he will get his career back on track against "cocky" Englishman Luke Trainer in Dubai on Sunday (AEDT).

Wilkinson, 33, has had nine months to stew since his last fight, a TKO loss to Phil Davis in Orlando.

And Trainer, a 29-year-old who calls himself 'The Gent,' has fanned the flames ahead of the much anticipated showdown.

Watch all the action from the 2026 Professional Fighters League, live and on demand on Stan Sport

v, because like I said he might knock me out in the first minute," Trainer said.

"I think I'm going to put him out in the first round. I think if he shoots on me, I'll strangle him. If not the second, if not the third. I believe I will put him away."

Luke Trainer believes title shot next with big win in return at PFL Dubai

Luke Trainer hopes a big performance at PFL Dubai gets him a championship bout against Corey Anderson

Luke Trainer is ready to remind people who he is after a lengthy layoff, and hopes to parlay that into a championship opportunity.

Trainer returns to action for the first time since September 2024 to face former PFL season champion Rob Wilkinson this Saturday at PFL Dubai. Trainer enters the bout a winner of four straight, and eight of nine, as he makes his first appearance in the PFL SmartCage after a seven-fight run with Bellator.

“The Gent” was hoping to face a different opponent, but he’s thrilled to face a dangerous and seasoned fighter like Wilkinson.

Road to the title: Rob Wilkinson’s dream of being a two-time PFL champ

Always within arm’s reach of the world title and never one to cherry-pick opponents, ‘Razor’ Rob Wilkinson returns to the cage with a burning fire in his eyes and championship gold on his mind.

In a sport full of endless highs and lows, not many fighters can say they reached the pinnacle of MMA and became a world champion, let alone an Australian from Tasmania who defied the odds. Rob Wilkinson (19-4-0) etched his name in the history books in 2022, becoming the PFL light heavyweight champion —  and he plans to make history again.

Almost one year since he last fought in May 2025, Wilkinson, the number-three-ranked light heavyweight, is set to take on number-six-ranked Luke ‘The Gent’ Trainer (9-1-0) on Saturday, Feb 7, 2026, at PFL Dubai: Nurmagomedov vs Davis.
