    August 26, 2026 – Iran war latest

Iran and Oman have outlined a proposal for a temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.

    • US pressure: President Donald Trump claims the financial strength of the US will move the country “toward a very big victory” over Iran, adding that he does not believe Iran’s supreme leader is dead. The US’ wider sanctions against Iran are targeting aviation, shipping, technology, gold and digital assets.

    • More diplomacy: Qatar’s prime minister will visit Tehran on Thursday and meet with Iranian officials, according to Qatar’s foreign ministry. Earlier this week, Qatar voiced support for ongoing efforts between Oman and Iran to reach an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments.

Iran live updates: Tanker attacked in Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO says

The Trump administration is trying to ramp up economic pressure on Iran.

President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.

The U.S. and Iran have nonetheless continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz as the primary flashpoint.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre on Thursday said it received a report of a tanker being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran vows to retaliate against countries that cooperate with fresh US sanctions

Test of US rhetoric will rest on whether nations such as India, China and Russia view economic threats as credible

Tehran has vowed to retaliate against any country that cooperates with the US attempt to impose fresh sanctions against Iran in what the Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has billed as “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary”.

In advance of the US announcement, the United Arab Emirates, Iran’s single biggest trading partner in the Middle East, announced it was ending all trade with Iran, a move Tehran believes was coordinated between Washington and the UAE.

The US has said it will impose sanctions on any country or entity trading with Iran – what are known as secondary sanctions.

Iran faces 'greatest financial offensive ever', says US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

The US treasury secretary has threated Iran with "the single greatest financial offensive ever", claiming the US-Israel war with Iran was "entering its endgame".

Scott Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country in "an economic D-Day" and that any nation partnering with Iran financially would also be isolated.

Bessent's threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from US President Donald Trump's administration on previous threats.

Iran dismissed Bessent's comments and said it would shut down all oil exports from the region "if the war continues", according to news agency Reuters.

The Iranian regime has also issued a new warning to shipping not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission, the agency reported.

The US and Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis have reported separate attacks on shipping as prospects for ending the Iran war dimmed, with Tehran saying the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless Washington accepts its conditions.

The attacks, in the Gulf of Oman ‌leading to the strait and at the entrance to the Red Sea – both vital choke points for global oil supplies – come as the war shows no signs of ending despite repeated assertions from US President Donald Trump ‌of a deal being imminent.

US forces in the Middle East say they have carried out dozens of strikes on Revolutionary Guard targets across Iran, hitting "missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites, and maritime capabilities".

The strikes followed comments from US President Donald Trump that he was going to "beat the f****** s***" out of Iran, after it launched missile attacks against American bases in Jordan.

While the war with Iran threatens to expand across the region, US officials have privately cautioned that resuming major combat operations would ‌carry significant risk, given America's dwindling munition stocks.

US strikes ‘dozens’ of targets in Iran, hours after Trump’s expletive-laden threat

Baghdad: The US military launched strikes on Iranian targets, hours after President Donald Trump warned that a retaliatory attack was imminent after Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward American forces in the Middle East.

US Central Command announced the strikes – which began at 10am on Thursday (AEST) – on social media and said they were “a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attack”.

“We’re going to be hitting them very hard, because it’s our turn to hit ’em. They know it’s coming, they’re asking us not to do it,” Trump had told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon (US time).

Farmers kept planting as the war raged and now they are paying for it

Quality for winter crops has been great for north Queensland. (ABC News: Brooke Tindall)

Vegetable growers in north Queensland were anxious to plant their winter crops when the price of diesel jumped above $3 a litre in March.

The harvest is now underway and, although fuel prices have eased, farmers are not making the return on what they spent earlier in the year.

Bowen vegetable farmer David Richardson said the prices he received for his eggplant this year had been poor.

Mr Richardson said growers were feeling the repercussions of the rising costs that had flowed in the wake of the war in Iran and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.

Ukraine war briefing: EU sanctions oust Russian president of world chess

EU unveils largest package in four years of measures against Russian individuals and interests; Laura Loomer shows up in Kyiv. What we know on day 1,612

Arkady Dvorkovich, the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), said on Friday he was suspending his activity with the organisation after being placed on the EU list of sanctioned Russians. Dvorkovich, a former Russian deputy prime minister, complained that the designation was “unlawful and unfair”. A statement said Viswanathan Anand, an Indian world chess champion, would take over as the federation’s interim president.

It came as the EU has unveiled its largest sanctions package in four years against Russia, targeting 218 individuals and entities. The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said the measures hit more than 100 banks and cryptocurrency operators, more than 40 ‌vessels from Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, as well as several oil refineries. The package adds more than 50 military-industrial entities to the sanctions list, including key actors ‌involved in producing Russia’s long-range drones. The Russian oil price cap is frozen at $44.10 per barrel for 12 months, preventing an automatic increase that would have raised it to about $58.50.

The EU has imposed sanctions on the head of the Russian Olympic Committee and the president of FIDE

The European Union has imposed sanctions against Russia’s Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee, Mikhail Degtyarev, as well as the President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Matviy Bidny. According to him, Degtyarev openly supports Russia’s war against Ukraine, while Dvorkovich, as head of FIDE, promotes the Kremlin’s interests and contributes to the legitimization of Russia in international sports.

“Their inclusion on the EU sanctions list confirms that there is no place in the civilized world for Kremlin officials and their lobbyists,” Bidnyi noted.

Statement by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich – International Chess Federation

Today, the EU decision to include my name in the 21st sanctions list was published. I want to state unequivocally that I consider this decision unlawful and unfair, and this decision will be immediately challenged by all possible means. I am confident that justice will prevail.

However, given that until a formal court decision is rendered and/or such decision is cancelled or amended, these sanctions could hinder the stable functioning of FIDE, I have decided to voluntarily suspend the exercise of my powers and duties as FIDE President with immediate effect and for as long as I remain subject to sanctions under the EU and Swiss laws and regulations. In accordance with the FIDE Charter, the duties of the President will be assumed by the FIDE Deputy President, the 15th World Champion, Viswanathan Anand.
