'ISIS bride' was 14 when she married a terrorist, sister says

The sister of an Australian woman who married an Islamic State fighter has revealed how her sister was "groomed" into travelling to a war zone in Syria where she is now stuck.

A group of 23 Australian children and 11 women with links to the IS terrorist group attempted to return to Australia from a Syrian refugee camp last week.

The Australian government has refused to help the group, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying he has "nothing but contempt" for the women.

Ex-housemate claims ISIS bride wanted to ‘make bombs’

A former housemate of Kirsty Rosse-Emile claims the ISIS bride declared as a teen she wanted to “make bombs” rather than return to school, raising fresh concerns as she seeks to return to Australia from Syria.

A former housemate of Australian ISIS bride Kirsty Rosse-Emile says she was stunned when, as a teenager, Rosse-Emile declared she did not want to return to school and instead wanted to “go and make bombs”.

As Ms Rosse-Emile and another 10 ISIS brides attempt to return to Australia, the woman — identified only as Sara — told the Daily Mail about her conversation with Ms Rosse-Emile when they were teenagers.

A Sydney doctor trying to help families linked to Islamic State return to Australia says he is confident the women and children will eventually be repatriated.

Jamal Rifi, an Order of Australia recipient known for his advocacy in Muslim communities, made headlines last week when reports emerged he was helping the 34 Australian citizens stuck in a detention camp in Syria.

The group, consisting of 11 women and 23 children, had last Monday tried to leave the camp and make their journey onwards to Australia, but were forced to turn around by Syrian authorities shortly afterwards.

Just after question time on 23 November 2022, the federal parliament debated a motion relating to the repatriation of four Australian women and 13 children who had been stuck in a Syrian detention camp since the fall of Islamic State three years prior.

One after another Labor MPs argued with passion, clarity and logic about why it was not just acceptable, but necessary and morally right, for the federal government to assist the return of its own citizens from the squalid and dangerous camps.

I need to clarify why, as a doctor, I have been in Syria, helping with efforts to bring children and their mothers back to Australia. Thus far, given the sensitivities, and for the children’s sake, I have chosen not to enter the political debate that I have seen swirling at home. But now, while I am still in the Middle East, away from my beloved Australia, I must explain my role, dispel misinformation and respond to a particularly flawed policy proposal to make it a crime to assist in the repatriation of the 34 Australian citizens trapped in Syria’s detention camps.

‘It was very scary’: Inside the shocking America’s Next Top Model documentary

It’s judgment day for America’s Next Top Model and, true to form, it’s televised. When the reality show premiered in 2003, it promised to give viewers a glimpse behind the scenes into the modelling and fashion industries. However, the show – created and hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks and producer Ken Mok – soon became infamous for the extreme lengths it was willing to go to in order to shock its audience and make “good TV”.

Now, a slick three-part Netflix documentary, Reality Check: America’s Next Top Model, is unpicking the series, which ran for 24 seasons (or “cycles” in ANTM speak) and, at its height, drew more than 100 million viewers worldwide.

It has been eight years since America’s Next Top Model last aired, yet one of the most unhinged exports of early-2000s reality television has been exhumed by Netflix’s three-part documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, which premiered on February 16.

Like all cultural artefacts best left in their era, ANTM has not aged quietly.

Created by Tyra Banks and developed with showrunner Ken Mok, the series debuted in 2003 and ran for 24 seasons, or “cycles” in ANTM-speak.

Fears for Australia's 'best beach' overrun with tourists arriving 'by the busload'

An increasing number of Australia's most unspoiled and pristine locations are facing being overrun with visitors, leaving authorities scrambling to preserve their natural beauty while reaping the benefits of tourist dollars. The nation's "best beach" is the latest on the list under threat, prompting a new plea.

Tourism Australia named Squeaky Beach the best across the continent in 2024, and it came second on Lonely Planet’s list of the best beaches in the world last year.

Situated on the east side of Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria — at the southermost tip of the state — visitor numbers have risen exponentially in recent years, as guests flock to enjoy its white quartz sands.

I was gaslit by doctors for years. A hysterectomy finally gave me my life back

Blurred vision, exhaustion and bleeding gums were just some of Keltie Knight’s symptoms of a rare type of anaemia

Keltie Knight is a Canadian-born American television presenter and podcast host.

When you’re a well-known 43-year-old American television host, life runs at 100 miles per hour. It’s a cut-throat industry, and there’s no room for error. So when, a couple of years ago, my vision became so blurry that I couldn’t read the teleprompter on set, I started to panic.

Before I began working in television, I was a professional ballet dancer, so I always had this attitude that “pain is gain”. But as my career on television took off and I became extremely busy, my health started to deteriorate more and more.

'I was stunned': Andy Roddick claims Djokovic near-miss with ball kid 'way worse' than US Open default

Former world No.1 Andy Roddick says Novak Djokovic's angry swipe at the ball and near miss of a ball kid was "way worse" than his actions at the 2020 US Open.

Late in the second set of his third-round clash at the Australian Open, and leading 4-2 against Botic van de Zandschulp, Djokovic reacted to a lost point by lashing a ball to the left of the court.

The shot whistled agonisingly close to the ball kid at the net post in a moment that could have become the biggest story of the tournament.

Novak Djokovic in near-disqualification drama as star quits Aus Open and career ends after 22 years

Novak Djokovic came perilously close to being disqualified and kicked out of the Australian Open on Saturday night after blasting a ball in anger that nearly hit a ball kid. Djokovic let his frustrations boil over in the second set of his third-round clash with Botic van de Zandschulp, which he won 6-3 6-4 7-6 (4).

After the ball landed out following a long rally, Djokovic took an angry swipe at it. The 10-time Aus Open champion appeared to be trying to hit the ball at the net, but miscued and nearly collected a ball girl who was stationed near it.

Tennis great Andy Roddick ‘stunned’ by Novak Djokovic nearly hitting a ball kid at Australian Open

Tennis great Andy Roddick has teed off at Novak Djokovic after the 10-time Australian Open champion went within a whisker of being defaulted from another grand slam tournament.

Midway through the second set of his third-round win over Botic van de Zandschulp, a frustrated Djokovic wildly slapped a shot in the direction of a ball kid.

It came after van de Zandschulp pushed a shot long and appeared completely unnecessary given the Serbian had won the point and was leading by a set and 4-2 at the time.

The kid had no chance to react, barely flinching as the ball flew past her head.

In the promo for Wednesday night’s premiere of ABC news satire Always Was Tonight, host Tony Armstrong promised comedy that was “black, cracked and risking the sack”. He delivered.

The 30-minute special, timed around January 26, ran hard at targets such as Sky News (“announcing a rival to triple J called triple K”), mining magnate Gina Rinehart (“owner of Australia’s biggest hole”) and the ABC itself.

“It’s an honour to be the first black face fronting an ABC comedy show since Chris Lilley,” Armstrong said, opening the show. In character as the ambassador for White Australia, Bjorn Stewart (Black Comedy) later joked about examples of a “white corroboree” including “Adelaide Writers Festival” and an “ABC staff meeting”.

I Was Skeptical of Charlie Sheen’s Nonalcoholic Beer. Here's My Honest Review of Wild AF Cold Gold

I honestly wasn’t sure if I’d like Charlie Sheen’s nonalcoholic beer Wild AF Cold Gold. Could Sheen—who isn’t exactly famous for his discerning palate when it comes to alcohol—be trusted to put out a high-quality product?

Well, when I cracked open a can of his cheekily named golden lager-like beer that references his role in the smash hit Major League, I was pleasantly surprised.

The beer was downright quaffable and paired perfectly with a range of foods. If you hadn’t told me it was nonalcoholic, I wouldn’t have noticed. I’ll credit its drinkability to the fact that Sheen partnered with New England craft beer pioneers Harpoon Brewery. It took them about two years to dial in the flavor, which was built around Sheen’s personal preference and designed to be the ultimate ballpark beer. Their hard work certainly paid off.

The Coalition Split and the Re-emergence of One Nation

Despite denials, I find it hard to believe that this week’s split in the Coalition doesn’t stem from the reported surge in support for One Nation. Perhaps this week is not all about One Nation, but what has been building for months is about One Nation.

Voting intentions in this week’s Newspoll recorded One Nation on 22% of the national vote, for the first time polling ahead of the Coalition on 21%. Labor’s support slipped to 32% with the Greens on 12% and Others 13%.

Similar results from lesser known pollsters released since the start of January were dismissed. But when Newspoll starts reporting a surge in One Nation support, it gets more attention from the political classes.
