FFF to receive at least 25.8 million euros after France reach World Cup semi-finals

France’s run to the World Cup semi-finals guarantees the FFF at least 25.8 million euros from FIFA, enough to balance the tournament budget but little more.

According to L'Équipe, staging costs in the United States have been steep, even with no trips to Mexico or Canada. Travel, hotels, security, player and staff bonuses, and ticketing left the federation exposed had results dipped.

Before flying to Boston, FFF president Philippe Diallo warned many federations would struggle to break even at this World Cup and said France needed to go deep. He set reaching the semi-finals as the minimum to avoid a loss.

Tennis world pays tribute after legend announces retirement following Wimbledon final

Tennis fans and fellow commentators are paying tribute to John Lloyd after the commentary legend announced his retirement at Wimbledon. The 71-year-old has been a mainstay on the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon for over two decades, but announced after the men's doubles final that he won't be back next year.

The BBC is undergoing a changing of the guard, with Lloyd, Andrew Castle and Jo Durie all moving on. Sue Barker called her last Wimbledon for the BBC in 2022 before parting ways.

Aussie commentator Todd Woodbridge dropped the news of Lloyd's retirement after the final point in the doubles final. "Before we get to the presentation, worth just saying something about you, Lloydy," Woodbridge said. "It might be the last chance that I get to sit in the comms' box with you, it's been an absolute pleasure."

BBC Wimbledon commentator confirms shock retirement during final

A third BBC commentator has announced they will step down from their role at the end of Wimbledon.

Veteran BBC tennis commentator John Lloyd has announced he is commentating on his last Wimbledon – midway through Saturday's men's doubles final.

The 71-year-old, who reached the Australian Open final as a player in 1977, has commentated for the BBC since the 1990s.

The former British number one was calling the Wimbledon men's doubles final, which was won by British star Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara, when he declared he would be calling time on his broadcasting career at the end of the event.

BBC commentator explains decision to quit Wimbledon after bombshell dropped on air

BBC Wimbledon commentator and former British No.1 tennis player John Lloyd has explained his decision to step back from his role, after it was announced live on air that this would be his last tournament.

The 71-year-old has been part of the coverage for almost 30 years, and said his goodbyes after commentating on the men’s doubles finals in which Finnish-British pair Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten came out victorious. It was just after the final point was won, when the announcement was made by fellow commentator Todd Woodbridge.

One hundred games down, four (including the third-place playoff) to go, starting with perhaps the most tantalizing match-up of the 2026 World Cup so far. France’s encounter with Spain has the potential to define the entire tournament.

France are the favorites to lift their second World Cup in three attempts. Their forward line is ferocious and Didier Deschamps is empowering his best players to reach peak performance. Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise are enough to send a shiver down the spine of any opposition defense.

Meanwhile, Spain have the technical ability to control any game. The European champions may not have reached the standards they set for themselves at Euro 2024, but they have made it this far despite not performing at their best. They have another gear or two to shift into.

Mbappe doubts linger as Spain, France meet in ‘final before the final’

Spain and France both feel that the winner of their semi-final on Tuesday (Wednesday 5am, AEST) will go on to claim the World Cup.

England and Argentina, who meet in the other semi-final in Atlanta on Wednesday, would disagree, but as Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente said of their showdown in Texas: “It’s not an exaggeration to describe this match as a final before the final.”

France are the top-ranked team in the FIFA rankings, while Spain are No.3. With Argentina ranked second and England fourth, this marks the first time the top four teams have reached the last four.

Harry Kane has insisted Thomas Tuchelâs strong criticism of Englandâs performance after their quarter-final win against Norway in Miami was driven by their failure to bring their excellence from the training ground into matches.

The England captain also suggested that Tuchelâs words had been designed to keep the players on their toes before the semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta on ÂWednesday because âhe knows as much as Âanyone that itâs not as simple as that â¦ heâs trying to drag it out of usâ.

Tuchel has been frustrated at Âvarious points of the tournament with the lack of cohesion and Âcomposure from his team. He did not pull his punches after the Norway game, saying he was unhappy with the performance âin every senseâ. The German complained about the high number of technical mistakes, the lack of speed and said the team had been âluckyâ.

Spain has a new king of the clutch, with Mikel Merino once again proving to be the hero with a critical last-gasp goal against Belgium.

Merino was the late hero for the second straight match for Spain, which will face tournament favourite France in the semifinals on Tuesday in the Dallas area.

Merino came on in the 86th minute and scored on his second touch of the match, charging into the box and pouncing after Senne Lammens spilled a rebound off Pau Cubarsí's long shot.

France advanced through second-half goals from Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, with The Guardian’s live report confirming their place in the last four.

Audience of 9.1 million watch 2am BST kick-off live and on iPlayer with 48m requests for digital content on Monday

Englandâs triumph over Mexico in the World Cup attracted a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer despite kicking off at 2am BST â the biggest television audience ever for a live UK broadcast at that hour.

The dramatic 3-2 win drove the biggest day ever recorded for BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app and for BBC Sportâs social video views, the broadcaster said.

The round-of-16 victory, in which Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane fired home a penalty, also delivered record-breaking audiences across BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with supporters staying up into the early hours or catching up on the drama later that morning.

Kane interview stuns viewers as England celebrations take toll

Harry Kane was lost for words after England survived an almighty scare in one of the most chaotic FIFA World Cup matches in history, capping off a dramatic day of action that also saw Brazil sent packing by Norway in a major Round of 16 upset.

After lengthy weather delays, the game was blown wide-open late in the first half when Jude Bellingham scored two goals in as many minutes, before Julian Quinones hit back for the host nation before the break.

Pure chaos erupted early in the second stanza when Jarell Quansah was sent off for England after flying in over the ball with his studs showing – yet moments later, it was England who took a 3-1 lead after skipper Harry Kane buried a penalty.
