World Cup 2026: Paraguay's Miguel Almiron sent off for covering mouth while speaking to opponent

Paraguay's Miguel Almiron became the first player to be shown a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent during his side's World Cup group match against Turkey in San Francisco.

Almiron, 32, obscured his mouth with his hand while speaking to Turkey's Mert Muldur, who immediately informed an official standing next to him.

Following a check by the video assistant referee (VAR), referee Ivan Barton from El Salvador announced to the crowd that he was sending off the former Newcastle United winger.

Commentating for BBC Radio 5 Live, former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison said: "If you know the rules, you shouldn't do it. You've got to credit the referee and the VAR for making that decision.

Turkey vs Paraguay live updates: World Cup 2026 game latest team news and build-up

Turkey are out from the 2026 World Cup after a 1-0 defeat against 10-player Paraguay which sees USMNT top the group.

Paraguay took the lead two minutes in as midfielder Matias Galarza netted with a powerful low strike from the edge of the box.

But MLS star Miguel Almiron became the first ever player to get a red card for covering his mouth when speaking to an opponent.

Turkey exit after failing to score from 62 shots across two games; the United States top Group D after earlier beating Australia 2-0.

Paraguay win knocks out Turkey. Will Almirón’s mouth-covering red card serve as a reminder?

World Cup: Who is Ayyoub Bouaddi, the French teenager playing for Morocco?

A promising midfielder marked for the French team, Bouaddi is a breakout sensation on his World Cup debut with Morocco.

Until last month, France-based teen footballer Ayyoub Bouaddi probably thought he would experience this year’s FIFA World Cup the way most 18-year-olds do – watching it on a TV, surrounded by friends and family, and most likely backing Les Bleus, one of the pre-tournament favourites and the team he would join in the future.

Having risen through the French youth ranks, Bouaddi was tied to the French national team programme and marked as a future talent.

But Bouaddi was no ordinary 18-year-old. He had recently become the youngest player to record 50 appearances in France’s top tier of club football – Ligue 1.

The most valuable U19 midfielder in the world? Bouaddi's World Cup is rewriting his price tag

The World Cup is often the perfect stage for young players to announce themselves to the world, and no player has so far grasped that opportunity better than Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. In the African nation’s opening game against Brazil, the 18-year-old talent embodied his team’s fearless performance against the World Cup heavyweights and spent much of the match outplaying the star-studded opposition. The Lille talent seems to be on the cusp of greatness for his national team and, to no great surprise, many of Europe’s biggest clubs are taking notice.

“As a French football fan, I'm quite disappointed to see him go for another team other than France,” noted Ronan Caroff, French Area Manager, when he discussed Bouaddi’s introduction to the World Cup on this week’s Market Values podcast. “But of course, with how stacked the French midfield is and the level that Bouaddi has shown already with Lille for the past few seasons, it makes sense that Morocco will come knocking on his door and probably attract him with more playing time early on. And so far, the bet seems to have been successful with his performances in the pre-World Cup friendlies. And then in his first game with Brazil, he was already given a lot of responsibility, and he's shown the same qualities that he has with Lille so far.”

Arsenal ahead of big rivals in the race for Ligue 1 talent

Ayyoub Bouaddi is one of the finest teenagers in world football, and he could be moving to Arsenal this summer as the Gunners push to land the Lille youngster.

Football365 claims that Arsenal are ahead of the likes of PSG and Chelsea in the race for his signature as he continues to shine for Morocco at the World Cup.

He delivered a commanding performance during their first game of the competition against Brazil, dominating the midfield and surprising many fans with his display.

That performance has made more teams and supporters take notice of the midfielder, and Arsenal want to add him to their squad in this transfer window.

Brazil vs. Haiti—World Cup: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Brazil hopes its 2026 World Cup gets going on Friday, up against Haiti as Group C moves into matchday two of the tournament and looking for a first win.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Seleção was sluggish in its opening match against Morocco, outplayed by the 2022 semifinalist and perhaps fortunate to escape without picking up a loss.

Vinicíus Júnior pointed the finger at the MetLife Stadium pitch, saying the dry playing surface made it difficult to get into Brazil’s usual rhythm. In Philadelphia, it won’t be any cooler but the field at least isn’t sitting atop a hard synthetic surface below.

Re-ranking the 48 World Cup teams after day seven: England justify status but Portugal on the slide – The Athletic

Harry Kane celebrates with Jude Bellingham after the latter's goal just after half-time against Croatia Francois Nel/Getty Images

Strong starts are crucial to securing progression to the knockouts and the best possible passage, but Portugal stumbled out of the blocks on day seven — unlike England, Ghana and Colombia, who all won.

All teams have now played their first game at the tournament and we are preparing for the second round of matches. We get another look at one of the hosts, Canada, later today, who will fancy their chances against Qatar.

France’s litmus test provided positive results with an opening game 3-1 victory over Senegal. Unlike Spain and Brazil, two of the other fancied teams, they did not underwhelm.

From one to 48 – every World Cup team ranked after first game

Argentina kicked off their World Cup defence with an emphatic win – but are not the best side at this World Cup so far, according to our BBC Sport experts.

We've brought together a small team of journalists who, between them, have watched every side's opening game.

And they have ranked all 48 teams at the tournament, from first to last.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Power Rankings: Argentina surge behind Lionel Messi, France go top, USMNT start strong

The World Cup is finally here and after the first round of matches, all 48 teams have gotten their first taste of action in the tournament. We've also already had our share of shocks, none bigger than Spain's draw against Cabo Verde and Portugal's stumble against DR Congo, involving two of the most highly anticipated sides in the competition. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's United States men's national team enjoyed a dream start, impressing in their debut with a 4-1 win against Paraguay and strengthening their position ahead of their second group-stage match against Australia.

Elsewhere it's been a tournament of stars. Lionel Messi continues to age like a fine wine with an opening game hat trick for Argentina against Algeria. Right behind him are some of the world's biggest goal scorers with Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe all netting twice for England, Norway and France, respectively. As we head into game two, the picture will start to become clearer about which 32 teams will advance from the 48-team field, and which 16 teams (the last place finisher in each group plus the four worst third-place finishers) will go home.

As the Socceroos shine on the world stage, a different victory is unfolding at home

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

As anti-migrant rhetoric intensifies in Australia, the Socceroos' diverse World Cup squad sends a powerful message to multicultural communities that they belong, migrant advocates say.

The team shocked the world defeating a higher-ranked Türkiye 2-0 on Sunday, with a stunning opening goal scored by 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda, a former refugee and the Socceroos' youngest ever World Cup scorer.

The diversity of Australia's 26-man squad — comprising at least 15 cultural and ethnic backgrounds — has become a focal point of the team's World Cup campaign, with players releasing a video celebrating their migrant roots on the eve of the tournament.

Soccer and immigration are deeply intertwined in Australia. This exhibition explains why

There’s nothing like the World Cup to bring people of different cultures together. Australians of all backgrounds roared with delight when Nestory Irankunda and then Connor Metcalfe scored against Turkey in the Socceroos’ first match of the tournament.

The Socceroos’ second World Cup game on Saturday comes after a week in which One Nation leader Pauline Hanson argued for a stop to multiculturalism, and at a time when members of the Australian team are proudly proclaiming their rich, diverse backgrounds in a social media campaign that speaks directly to those who criticise immigration.

Irankunda was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania; his parents were originally from neighbouring Burundi but had fled due to civil war, eventually settling in Perth when he was three months old. His teammates Awer Mabil, Mohamed Touré and Miloš Degenek also came to Australia as refugees.

Socceroos forward Awer Mabil offered his trademark focus on Wednesday afternoon in Oakland speaking to the Australian media about this week’s clash against the United States. There was one distraction, however, he could not overcome.

The winger lost his concentration when long-time SBS commentator David Basheer – in the US as part of the network’s coverage – asked a question during the press conference. “Sorry, David from SBS, right?” Mabil interjected. “I grew up watching you.”

56 min: Canada substitution Ismael Kone is stretchered off to be replaced by Nathan Saliba. He’s sitting up and waving to fans as he is taken down the tunnel, which is both unexpected and uplifting.

55 min There’s a lot of pushing and shoving on the sidelines. It sounds like the referee upgraded the red card of his own accord, without VAR intervention, though I’m not certain about that.

It’s been upgraded to a red card. We haven’t seen a replay of the challenge, presumably because the leg-break is so horrible.

There’s some tension on the pitch after Assim Madibo is shown a yellow for a bad foul on Ismael Kone who has stayed down and is receiving treatment on the pitch. A stretcher has been brought out for the 24-year-old.

It’s a sickening replay as Kone’s leg looks to be in a poor way.

“His leg is f—ing broken’, one of the Canadians can be heard saying to the referee over the broadcast. VAR are checking for a second possible red card and it’s going to be given. Madibo is sent off and Qatar are down to nine players.

Canada vs. Qatar—World Cup: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Canada and Qatar go head to head in Group B on Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver, with both sides searching for their first win of the 2026 World Cup—and indeed, the first World Cup victory in their histories.

Neither nation has ever won a match at soccer’s biggest tournament, a run that continued in their opening fixtures this summer as Canada drew 1–1 with Bosnia & Herzegovina and Qatar played out a stalemate of the same score with Switzerland.

With qualification for the knockout rounds potentially on the line, both sides will be desperate to finally get three World Cup points on the board.

Can Julián Quiñones, Raúl Jiménez and Edson Alvarez Deliver? Five Keys to Mexico vs South Korea

Mexico can take a major step toward winning Group A when El Tri face South Korea in Guadalajara, where Javier Aguirre's latest rebuild first began to take shape.

Back in 2024, El Tri defeated the USMNT 2-0 at Estadio Akron with goals from Raúl Jiménez and César "Chino" Huerta. That night settled more than a friendly. It confirmed Jiménez as Mexico's attacking reference point, strengthened the idea that Johan Vásquez and César Montes could become the team's central defensive foundation, and pushedRoberto "Piojo" Alvaradocloser to becoming one of Aguirre's most trusted players.

Since then, other names have emerged. Álvaro Fidalgo has given Mexico more control in midfield. Julián Quiñones has brought a different edge to the attack. Brian Gutiérrez has added another creative layer. Now, against South Korea, Mexico will get a clearer measure of how much it has grown since that friendly against Mauricio Pochettino's side.

‘Most famous tree in the world’: Sherwood Forest’s 1,000-year-old Major oak dies

Nottinghamshire tree, one of Europe’s oldest and largest, fails to produce leaves after being stressed by series of hot, dry summers

The Major oak, one of Europe’s oldest, largest and most celebrated ancient trees, has died.

The huge tree, which has grown in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, England, for at least 1,000 years, failed to produce any leaves this year, after becoming stressed by a series of hot, dry summers.

Thousands of visitors admire the oak each year, with its great age, enormous 11-metre girth and 28-metre canopy inspiring a forest of folklore. Although the oak would not have been hollow in Robin Hood’s day, it was said to have provided a sanctuary for the outlaw and his gang when fleeing the tyrannical Sheriff of Nottingham.

Major Oak: Ancient 'Robin Hood' tree is dead, experts say

An ancient oak tree that has stood in the heart of a famous forest for hundreds of years and is linked to the legend of Robin Hood has died, experts believe.

The Major Oak is estimated to have lived in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire for up to 1,200 years, and is considered one of Britain's biggest oak trees.

Conservationists worked to protect the tree, which attracted millions of visitors over its life, but in recent years the natural giant was in decline.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) – the conservation charity which manages the forest – said after the tree's first spring with no leaves this year, scientific experts believed the Major Oak had died.

Ancient Sherwood Forest oak tree reputed to have sheltered Robin Hood has died

When knights of old went looking for Robin Hood, they knew where to find him. The legendary outlaw has been associated with England’s Sherwood Forest for centuries, and one tree in particular has traditionally been cited as his hideout: the Major Oak.

Scientists now believe this 1,200-year-old oak tree has died after it failed to produce any new leaves this spring, British conservation body the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said in a news release.

With a canopy spread of 28 meters (92 feet) and a trunk circumference of 11 meters (36 feet), the Major Oak was one of the biggest trees in Britain. Supports for some of the branches were put in place in the early 20th century, and the tree was fenced off in the 1970s.
