World Cup live updates: Shock over Iran player’s ‘political’ celebration
A rift between South Korea players and the country’s media has overshadowed the side’s preparations for Thursday’s World Cup match against Mexico, following disparaging comments about captain Son Heung-min.
The South Korean football association said it regretted “the inappropriate remarks made by some media personnel during the national football team’s training at the Guadalajara base camp”.
The organisation added the comments caused “great shock and disappointment” within the squad.
The incident occurred during an open training session on June 7, days before South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in its first World Cup match.
The 33-year-old Son, running with teammates, was mocked by unidentified media personnel over his military record in footage recorded by broadcaster JTBC, South Korea’s official rights holder for the tournament.

Two Kiwi men based in America have found themselves caught in between a geo-political and cultural sporting flashpoint in Los Angeles this afternoon.Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, a New Zealand musical duo currently based in New York, had no idea their innocent trip to the West Coast to watch their home nation's football team would end with them caught in a shouting match between pro-monarchist Persian-Americans and a the travelling Iranian football fans.The Kiwi men, who have also admitted to never previously watching their rugby-obsessed nation play the alien sport of soccer, didn't think they would find themselves in the centre of the politically charged match.
