So it’s Trump 1, Belgium 4 – and the world rejoices. Nothing like failed chicanery to bring us together, is there?

Joy is unbounded and when it dies down perhaps the guilty will be held to account for cheating and facilitation: perhaps they won’t. Still, enjoy the moment

Oh dear. Such a shame to see the US lose at football after their insanely embarrassing president cheated for them. Still, it really brought the world together. The last time this many people cheered on a Belgian resistance, it was 1914 and the Germans had just crossed the Meuse. As you’ll be aware, the USA were dumped out of their own World Cup on Monday night by a wholly superior Belgium, after Donald Trump boasted that he’d personally intervened in three phone calls with Fifa president Gianni Infantino to get the red card shown to USA striker Folarin Balogun rescinded. Yes, the US cheats at football. Pass it on.

Is FIFA’s integrity at stake after Donald Trump’s interference?

ADAM HARVEY, REPORTER: Donald Trump is a recent convert to football and its finery.

GIANNI INFANTINO, FIFA: This is for winners only and since you are a winner, of course you can as well, touch it.

ADAM HARVEY:  The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, played to the president’s ego.

GIANNI INFANTINO: This is your peace prize for you, that you can wear everywhere you want to go.

ADAM HARVEY:  Last year, Infantino presented Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

GIANNI INFANTINO:  You can always count, Mr President, on my support and the support of the entire football community, or soccer community to help you make peace and make the world prosper.

World Cup’s credibility in question after Fifa volte face following call from Donald Trump

After four weeks of dazzling action on the pitch, it may be an off-field scandal that comes to define this summer’s World Cup. Fifa’s decision to allow America’s star striker, Folarin Balogun, to play in a last-16 match against Belgium, despite having been sent off in the previous game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is in clear breach of the association’s own rules. The move has been greeted with outrage pretty much across the board.

Extraordinarily, Fifa, international football’s governing body, has not only so far declined to give any detailed reasoning for its decision to suspend what would be a standard one game ban following Balogun red card. The reversal appears to result from direct pressure from the White House. Media reports suggest that Donald Trump made three calls to Fifa, starting from Wednesday, to ensure that the red card was overturned. The White House has said that the call was made to understand why Balogun was sent off and the reason for the suspension.

World Cup 2026: England's Jordan Henderson injures wrist in celebrations

England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a "really bad" wrist injury while celebrating his side's dramatic World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

Henderson appeared to land awkwardly after falling from the advertising hoardings at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium following England's 3-2 victory and was pictured leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder's World Cup has been limited to a six-minute appearance at the end of England's Group L win over Panama.

"Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad," said England manager Thomas Tuchel on BBC One after his side's win on Monday.

England revels in a famous victory over Mexico, but the celebrations come at a cost for one star, while Erling Haaland's brilliance even has the man himself dumbfounded.

So often in sport, the games that come with the greatest hype are the ones that fail to deliver. England's clash with Mexico at the Azteca was not one of those.

This was an instant World Cup classic from start to finish. The raucous atmosphere, the full-throttle challenges, the ebbs and flows and ceaseless drama, this was a game that had it all.

World Cup 2026: Penalty? Red card? Why were they given against England?

Raul Jimenez converted a penalty to reduce England's lead to 3-2

England head coach Thomas Tuchel said referees at the World Cup "are just not good enough" after the dramatic last-16 win over Mexico.

The Three Lions were reduced to 10 men and also had a controversial penalty awarded against them in a thrilling game at the Azteca Stadium.

"It's just not good enough," Tuchel told BBC Sport. "The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line.

"Is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not. They overturned a situation where he doesn't even give a foul."

Germany parts ways with coach following disastrous exit

World Cup daily news. We will bring you the latest from around the world as the FIFA World Cup 2026™ finally gets under way (All times AEST).

After their disappointing exit against Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Tuesday (AEST), Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has parted ways with the DFB.

It's been reported by German newspaper Bild that the 38-year-old has left his position after it was 'strongly encouraged' that he resigns.

The former Bayern Munich manager has been in charge of the national side since 2023.

Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked to the position.

And with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, Switzerland are through to the Round of 16.

Jurgen Klopp is back! Germany job accepted two years after Liverpool exit as Julian Nagelsmann is replaced following 2026 World Cup flop

Jurgen Klopp has 'officially' agreed to return to the technical area as the new manager of the Germany national team. The former Liverpool boss will step into the vacancy left by Julian Nagelsmann following a dismal 2026 World Cup campaign that ended in total heartbreak for Die Mannschaft.

Klopp has reportedly accepted an offer to become the new head coach of Germany, ending his two-year hiatus from the dugout. Klopp walked away from Anfield in 2024 and has most recently been serving as the head of global football for the Red Bull Group, but the allure of the national team job has finally tempted him back into the heat of elite competition.

This will be over within 15 overs at this rate. England way too loose here.

Let's see what like of captain NSB is, will she bowl to the game plan or will she adapt when it goes wrong? I'd like to see an adaptable captain if I'm honest, too long have we stuck to a plan and folded.

Litchfield clubs it down the ground for the first six of the chase.

This has been a formidable start from the Aussies. England are struggling for answers.

Bravery, freedom: The mantras leading Australia's title push

Sophie Molineux will live out a dream when she leads her team out at Lord's in a T20 World Cup final, but the job is not yet done for Australia's skipper

As Sophie Molineux addressed the media at Lord's on Saturday, she was asked if she was personally satisfied with having led her team to a T20 World Cup final in her first campaign as captain.

First, her team needs to topple hosts England and lift the trophy for a seventh time.

After talking up a "no ceilings" approach to their T20 cricket across the past few years since their most recent title win in early 2023, this is the tournament where Australia have fully walked the walk.

FIFA World Cup 2026 as it happened: Mbappe penalty pips Paraguay in round of 16; Morocco end Canada’s run

Two early games equals an early finish, and we’ll be back bright and early again tomorrow in time for Brazil’s 6am meeting with Norway.

Carlo Ancelotti says Raphinha is ready to play a part after returning from injury for Brazil’s last-16 clash with Norway, but acknowledged his side would have to find a different solution to replace the injured Lucas Paqueta.

Raphinha returned to training on Friday after two weeks out with a hamstring injury sustained during Brazil’s group-stage win over Haiti. The forward is not ready to start, Ancelotti said, but could feature from the bench against a Norway side led by Erling Haaland.

There was also an off-the ball incident that saw France’s all-time leading goalscorer Mbappe go to ground following an incident with Matias Galarza.

Galarza appeared to swipe out at Mbappe as the France captain ran forward to be part of an attacking move, however, the referee allowed play to continue, while VAR deemed no punishment was necessary.
