World Cup 2026: Spain squad includes Lamine Yamal but no Real Madrid players

Injured forward Lamine Yamal has been named in Spain's World Cup squad, which does not feature any Real Madrid players for the first time.
The 18-year-old missed the final month of the season after tearing his left hamstring while playing for Barcelona on 22 April.
"I don't look at one club or another. I don't have that local bias a fan might have. For me, it's more global," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.
"The only thing I want is for these footballers to feel proud of representing the national team."

Real Madrid are Spain’s most decorated club, and many of its players have starred for the country at World Cups throughout the competition’s history.
Therefore it was quite a shock to see no Real Madrid players named in Spain’s squad for this summer’s tournament — the first time this has ever happened in the country’s 17 participations since 1934.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente named his 26-strong squad in Madrid on Monday. There were eight players from La Liga champions Barcelona, and many representatives from other Spanish top-flight clubs including Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo and Osasuna.

The ‘de-Spanishification’ of Real Madrid
Slowly, Madrid has stopped having Spanish players in its ranks, which has led Luis de la Fuente to include none for the World Cup.

Only Gonzalo was included among the reinforcement players who will join the group before traveling to North America.
