Bangladesh aim to keep progress going in Afghanistan Test

ABU DHABI: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto targets further improvement in the five-day format as they meet Afghanistan in a one-off Test starting in Abu Dhabi from Friday.

Bangladesh upset Australia by nine wickets at Darwin in August before losing the second Test to draw the two-match series 1-1, an outcome that was seen as a huge step forward for the visitors.

The win lifted Bangladesh to fourth place in the nine-team World Test Championship (WTC) and gives them a good chance to play next year’s final.

Although the Test against Afghanistan is not included in the WTC, Shanto said his team was ready for the challenge.

Bangladesh won in Darwin and were bowled out for 64 in Mackay, and Afghanistan get them next in Abu Dhabi

Rahmat Shah leads Afghanistan in a Test for the first time against a Bangladesh side that beat Australia in August, with the head-to-head record level at one win each.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh start a one-off Test at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday, 9 October. It is only the third Test between them, and they have won one each.

It is also the first time Afghanistan have hosted Bangladesh in a Test, and the first Test for Rahmat Shah as Afghanistan’s full-time captain. He took over in July after Hashmatullah Shahidi stepped down, and Shahidi is in the squad as a batter.
