Steve Kerr Gets Real About the Warriors
It began with deep contemplation, as the Golden State Warriors’ 61-year-old coach weighed retirement after 13 seasons. Then came clarity, when he signed a two-year extension in May to lead the Warriors into an uncertain future. Then came action, as team brass took their biggest swing since signing Kevin Durant in 2016 with the pursuit of LeBron James in free agency.
Ultimately, James declined the Warriors’ overtures, opting to sign more than 3,000 miles away in Philadelphia, which offered the chance to contend at a level Golden State could not match. Meanwhile, the Warriors drafted Yaxel Lendeborg and re-signed Al Horford, D’Anthony Melton, and Kristaps Porzingis, who has yet to practice or play with the team because of an illness. They inked a pair of extensions in the backcourt: Stephen Curry for two years and $116 million, and Brandin Podziemski for five years and $110 million.
Steve Kerr Confirms Warriors Will Not Trade Their Future For Steph Curry
The early stages of a new season usually come with hope and optimism for teams across the NBA. In San Francisco, however, the Golden State Warriors are reeling from the news surrounding their sharpshooting big man Kristaps Porzingis, who may have played his last game as a pro.
With multiple players down and out for the count, the Warriors are facing a bleak situation with no clear solution in sight. But as pressure builds for the team to take action and make a win-now trade to help Steph Curry, Steve Kerr explained the Warriors’ current approach. Rather than sacrifice their future for immediate results, he confirmed the Warriors’ plan to keep their picks for the sake of preserving what few assets they have left.
