Hamilton apologises to Ferrari as Antonelli moves to brink of title

'They've thrown away a double podium' – what went wrong for Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton apologised to his Ferrari team after overriding the pit wall and choosing his own strategy during the Singapore Grand Prix.

Ferrari were on course to finish second and third with Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, but instead the seven-time champion fell back to sixth in the closing laps as he fought a losing battle to hold off three cars while on fading tyres.

Hamilton apologised to the team over the radio on the slowing-down lap after the race, saying: "Sorry, boys. I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points. I'll try and make up for it in the next one."

‘Tell me!’ Piastri calls out team in heated radio moment … before pointed Norris gesture

Oscar Piastri got the chance to vent some of a year’s worth of frustration on his McLaren team in Singapore, with a heated radio exchange summing up his mood as he attempted to pass Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps.

But the Australian’s dire run of ill luck continued as he completed another challenging weekend by settling for fifth following a chaotic Grand Prix.

Piastri came in one spot behind Lando Norris, as the latter finally issued an apology for his role in the friendly fire crash that saw his McLaren teammate need to retire from the sprint race.

‘A painful lesson’: Hamilton accepts fault for costly strategy error

The two sides of the Ferrari garage had two very different emotions at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton’s own mistake cost the team a double podium finish.

Charles Leclerc narrowly missed out on victory to a resurgent Max Verstappen and finished second.

Hamilton’s day ended in horribly, as the veteran accepted “full responsibility” for a costly decision to stay out on old tyres to try to make a strategy gamble work.

After starting in third, Hamilton’s rash decision didn’t pay off and the 41-year-old ended the race in sixth place, behind the two McLaren drivers.
