‘Fearless’ jockey riding in Cup days after horror fall
It’s the craziest story of the Lexus Melbourne Cup and rival jockeys are in awe of Harry Coffey amid his ability to ride in the great race.
Just days after fracturing his collarbone, the 31-year-old left no stone unturned in a bid to saddle up Shockletz on Tuesday afternoon.
Coffey was thrown from Pondalowie in the Empire Rose Stakes on Saturday and while he did escape relatively unscathed – as did the horse – few could have expected he would be pushing to ride in the Cup three days later.
“I’m very confident I’ll be right by tomorrow,” he told SEN on Monday morning.

Rivals have lauded Harry Coffey's remarkable toughness after the popular jockey was cleared to ride Shockletz in the Melbourne Cup following a successful procedure to repair a fractured collarbone.
Coffey had surgery on Sunday and was given every chance to prove his fitness for Australia's greatest race at Flemington on Tuesday by Shockletz's managing owner Laurence Eales.
Trained by Ciaron Maher, the daughter of 2009 winner Shocking sits among the leading contenders in betting markets, with Irishman Joseph O'Brien's Trustyourinstinct taking over as favourite from Point Of Law on Monday, at around the $7.50 mark.
