From K-pop to Conan: How the academy is 'leaning into big cultural moments' for the Oscars

LOS ANGELES — An unfiltered Conan O’Brien, a K-pop takeover onstage and absolutely no awards for Tilly Norwood.

This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is “leaning into big cultural moments,” in the words of CEO Bill Kramer.

Sunday’s Oscars ceremony comes at a period of transition for the academy, which has recently signed a groundbreaking deal with YouTube and is grappling — like the rest of the world — with the impact of AI.

Kramer and academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a recent interview with NBC News that they are mindful of the challenges the Oscars face in an ever-changing media landscape and in a year when often bleak headlines have dominated the news cycle.

‘On YouTube, we can reach 2.5bn people at once’: Oscars head Bill Kramer on TV, AI and 4am starts

The Academy CEO on his decidedly non-Hollywood beginnings, bonding with Robert Redford – and a formative watch of All That Jazz

It’s a boiling day in downtown Los Angeles; crowds are milling about outside the Dolby theatre where Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony is to be held, selfie-ing the giant Oscar statuettes.
And this is where the man with whom the buck stops is looking at the set, going through the top-secret opening number and busy with a thousand admin details. Academy CEO, Bill Kramer, increasingly renowned as one of the most important people in Hollywood, meets me for a pre-ceremony chat in a suite in the next-door Hollywood Loews Hotel. “It’s so nice that we’re not on camera!” he says. “Yeah, so happy. Let myself relax!”
He is approachable and diplomatic, revered for his fundraising wizardry at the Academy museum, where he was managing director of external development in 2012 before ascending to his current job at the Academy 10 years later. Kramer has a business degree and came to Columbia after his first substantial job working for the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York.
It was at a party in the 90s that this policy and financial strategist met the man who changed his life: Robert Redford. “He couldn’t believe how much I knew about movies!” says Kramer. “And he said he wanted to decrease reliance on corporate sponsorships and bring someone on board at Sundance to help generate philanthropic gifts from individuals. Would I be interested in doing that? I said: ‘Sign me up!’”

Running the Oscars is one of those jobs everyone thinks they understand until they realize it is part live television, part diplomacy, part group project with 11,000 voters, and part crisis management. But Lynette Howell Taylor doesn’t sweat it. The British producer behind A Star Is Born, Blue Valentine, and Captain Fantastic was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last summer, stepping into the role at the exact moment the awards conversation has become louder, faster, and more global than ever.

It took 10 years for Ballarat singer Harry Lamb to go from pub gigs to the national stage on Australian Idol, where he has just made the top 12.

With the top 12 now revealed, the 11th season of the music competition is entering the live performance phase, where audience votes will decide who stays and who goes.

The 27-year-old has been busy preparing songs for the next few rounds in a bid to surprise the audience.

Bunbury teen second West Aussie to make Aus Idol’s Top 12

Bunbury teenager John Standley has become the second West Aussie to qualify for Australian Idol’s Top 12 on Wednesday night after Fremantle’s Charlie Moon achieved the same feat on Monday.

Tasked with reinventing himself for Transformation Week, Standley, 17, strayed from his preferred 50s and 60s “jukebox” tunes to perform a modernised version of James Brown’s iconic hit I Got You.

The “feel good” classic got the judges on their feet as much as the crowd, with Kyle Sandilands admitting he could “see that touring”.

Amy Shark told the teen he’s “got a clear lane there, dude, so just go for it”.

    Alcaraz scrapes past plucky Rinderknech

Trailing the big-serving Frenchman by a set and an early break, Alcaraz turned the match on its head for a comfortable 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 victory in Indian Wells, extending his perfect start to the 2026 season to 14-0.

"He was playing his best tennis, I would say, in the first, the beginning of the second. For me, it was really, really difficult," said Alcaraz, who was pegged back by an aggressive start from Rinderknech. "I got in trouble, to be honest, but just really happy with the way that I dealt with everything that was happening. I accepted it, kept going, stayed strong mentally and then tried to do a little bit different… I think I just started to play more solid, waiting for my chances."

Novak Djokovic praises tennis rival Carlos Alcaraz's golf game

Some guys just have it all. Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz seems to be one of those guys.

The 22-year-old Spanish superstar is the top-ranked player in the world and has already won seven Grand Slam titles in his young career. He's also no slouch on the golf course, according to one of his biggest tennis rivals, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

In an interview with the Tennis Channel on Monday, Djokovic revealed that he had recently enjoyed a day on the links with Alcaraz and fellow tennis star Alexander Zverev, who won Olympic gold for Germany in 2020.

"It was my first time playing with these guys," Djokovic said. "It was fun. It was a lot of laughter, a lot of mind games. But it was great."

Docherty withdrawn from Blues function after stinging criticism

Sam Docherty will no longer appear at a Carlton function on Thursday night

FORMER Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty has been withdrawn from a Blues function at the MCG on Thursday night after his criticism of the club's game style in their heavy loss to Sydney in Opening Round.

Docherty, the 171-game Blues defender who retired last season, was due to speak at a Carlton function ahead of its match against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.

But the 32-year-old will no longer attend the function, although he will be welcomed back at the club down the track.

"We made a decision based off supporting our own people internally," Blues CEO Graham Wright said in a statement to Channel Nine's Footy Classified on Monday night.

The only surprising thing about Sam Docherty’s potty-mouthed tirade about the f—ing Blues was that he didn’t f—ing swear more. F— it.

The least surprising bit was that his mate, former Blue and podcaster Dan Gorringe, thought: “this is gold, I’m going to run it.” It should be surprising that Gorringe put the tirade to air. But it isn’t.

Offer from Iran’s president not to attack neighbours provokes internal backlash

As Masoud Pezeshkian tries to de-escalate conflict, hardliners urge installation of new supreme leader to marginalise the president

The surprise offer by the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, not to attack countries in the neighbourhood so long as their airspace and US bases within their territories are not used to attack Iran has provoked a storm inside the country as the military appeared to contradict him, if not outright overrule him.

There were also calls for a new supreme leader to be installed as quickly as possible, as a means of marginalising the president. Attacks on facilities in Bahrain and elsewhere have continued, and there were unconfirmed reports that Bahrain had become the first Gulf country to fire back at Iran.

Why are Iranian leaders sending mixed messages on Gulf attacks?

Attacks on the Gulf continue as President Pezeshkian’s remarks receive pushback from the powerful IRGC.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered an apology to neighbouring countries that have been subjected to Tehran’s retaliatory strikes since the United States and Israel launched a military offensive on the country.

But Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed its disapproval of the president’s remarks on Saturday, warning neighbouring countries that Tehran would continue attacks if US and Israel used their territory to attack Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not going to stop attacks while Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, underscored Tehran’s right to self-defence.
