Slow Horses: Season 6 review: A masterclass in brutal thrills and caustic comedy
Slow Horses has never been rooted in the cheeriest of premises. Far from the silky-smooth glamorous heroics of Bond, it follows an MI5 offshoot based at Slough House, where the Secret Service’s least-prized agents are shipped off to languish. Led by the cantankerous and flatulent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), its motley crew includes spy nepo baby River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), banished there in disgrace and forever trying to redeem himself. Over five seasons we’ve watched them bleed, grieve and stumble through one calamity after another. But even with that low bar for winning streaks, Season 6 is a particularly bruising affair.
‘Slow Horses’ Star Gary Oldman Reveals That “Spies Love This Show”
âIâm not very good at putting my feet up and kicking back,â Gary Oldman tells me. Thatâs clear. Heâs one of the finest actors of his generation, with the versatile résumé to prove it: Sid Vicious, Dracula, Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirius Black, Herman Mankiewicz, Winston Churchill. (Not to mention his Emmy-nominated guest-star turn on Friends.) But Oldmanâs most delightful role to date is his current one: Jackson Lamb on the Apple TV British spy series Slow Horses. Vanity Fair caught up with Oldman, who is as genial as his character is curmudgeonly, ahead of the showâs season six premiere on September 16.
