Verstappen wins Sprint as Russell crashes & McLarens collide
Victory went to Max Verstappen and Red Bull during a wet/dry Sprint race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Max Verstappen followed up his victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia by winning Saturday’s Sprint around the streets of Singapore – mastering the mixed weather conditions while George Russell crashed out early on and the McLaren drivers clashed in the closing stages.
After a pre-race downpour, which soaked the first and third sectors of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, while leaving the middle sector merely damp, the action got under way around half an hour later than planned, with all drivers running the intermediate tyres.
Max Verstappen takes F1 Singapore GP pole from Leclerc after sprint win
While Red Bull and Max Verstappen were very much on a roll at the Singapore Grand Prix with victory in the sprint and then pole position, Britain’s George Russell was left having to roll with the punches. His vanishingly slight title hopes took another blow after he crashed out of the sprint race on the streets of the Marina Bay circuit.
Verstappen’s pole was a mighty lap to beat the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc into second by five-hundredths of a second as the Dutchman enjoys his best form of the season. A 50th pole, his first in Singapore coming on the back of a pole and win at the last round in Malaysia and pole and victory in the sprint at Marina Bay.
