FIFA World Cup 2026 as it happened: Mbappe penalty pips Paraguay in round of 16; Morocco end Canada’s run

Two early games equals an early finish, and we’ll be back bright and early again tomorrow in time for Brazil’s 6am meeting with Norway.

Carlo Ancelotti says Raphinha is ready to play a part after returning from injury for Brazil’s last-16 clash with Norway, but acknowledged his side would have to find a different solution to replace the injured Lucas Paqueta.

Raphinha returned to training on Friday after two weeks out with a hamstring injury sustained during Brazil’s group-stage win over Haiti. The forward is not ready to start, Ancelotti said, but could feature from the bench against a Norway side led by Erling Haaland.

Live: Canada on top as Morocco loses star to injury

France overcomes Paraguay 1-0 thanks to a Kylian Mbappé penalty in a bad-tempered contest as temperatures hit 38 degrees in Philadelphia.

Earlier, Morocco marched into the World Cup quarterfinals with 3-0 win over Canada.

The classic celebratory anthem is pumping out of the speakers, and the France players have gone over to their supporters jumping, dancing, and singing along to celebrate with them.

A very different scene to the polite applause they gave their fans after a much more routine win in the round of 32. They know the pressure is ramping up, and every match from here on in is going to be tougher than the last.

Can the World Cup's viral stars turn social media fame into fortunes?

It took 90 minutes for Vozinha, Cape Verde's 40-year-old goalkeeper, to become a world-wide sensation with more Instagram followers than NFL legend Tom Brady.

Vozinha's impressive performance against Spain in the World Cup group stage led to a 0-0 draw, a huge surprise against one of the tournament favourites. It led to Vozinha's 50,000 Instagram followers ballooning to 17.4 million, surpassing athletes such as Brady (15.5 million).

World Cup stars, like Vozinha, can harness their new social media fame to generate lucrative financial opportunities.

But media expert Mike Serazio said those prospects can be fleeting. "It's viral – it goes up very fast and it goes down equally fast," he said.

World Cup 2026: Meet Vozinha, the veteran goalkeeper inspiring Cape Verde's dream

While the football world debates rising teenage stars and million-dollar transfers, one of the most captivating stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup belongs to a man affectionately known as "Grandpa."

His real name is Jorge Elídio Barbosa Fonseca, but almost everyone knows him as Vozinha.

At 39, the Cape Verde goalkeeper has become much more than the team's last line of defense.

He is its captain, organiser and emotional heartbeat, leading one of the tournament's biggest surprise packages with the calm of a man who has seen it all.

For a nation of just over half a million people, that kind of leadership is priceless.

Vozinha becomes $17M social media star after standout World Cup performance

Cape Verde's 40-year-old goalkeeper went viral after a historic draw with Spain, and the crypto market noticed immediately

A 40-year-old goalkeeper from Cape Verde just became one of the most talked-about athletes on the planet. Vozinha’s performance against Spain on June 15, 2026, was the kind of story that writes itself, and the internet did not waste a single second.

Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw in their first-ever World Cup match, played in the United States. Vozinha made seven saves and walked away with the man-of-the-match award. More importantly for crypto markets, he walked away with 12 million Instagram followers, up from roughly 50,000 before kickoff.

Portugal paid tribute to Diogo Jota after their World Cup win against Croatia

Portugal paid a touching tribute to Diogo Jota at the end of their remarkable World Cup victory against Croatia.

Switzerland are through to the round of 16 after an assured 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver today.

World Cup live updates: Two goals in 161 seconds bring Belgium back from brink

Belgium 3 Romelo Lukaku 86′ Youri Tielemans (89′, 120+5′), Senegal 2 (Habib Diarra 21′, Ismaïla Sarr 51′)- MATCH CENTRE

“I officially don’t like football any more,” Boateng says on SBS.

“I feel so sad for Senegal… this was not deserved for Belgium and Senegal, they can keep their heads up.”

But did Lamine Camara’s challenge on Youri Tielemans warrant that extra time penalty?

“If the other way round, it wouldn’t be given to Senegal, I would be furious, you know,” Boateng said.

That’s fulltime in Seattle as Belgium advance past heartbroken Senegal 3-2 in a dramatic and controversial finish.

It was the latest winner in World Cup history as Youri Tielemans scored in the 125th minutes.

Tielemans’ controversial late penalty caps Belgium comeback over Senegal

A seesawing classic of a contest had just ticked into the 122nd minute, penalties all but a formality, when the referee, Saíd Martínez, wandered back towards the centre circle to award Belgium a stoppage-time penalty. The VAR, Guillermo Pacheco Larios, had highlighted Lamine Kamara swiping away Youri Tielemans’s left ankle in the seconds before Dodi Lukébakio had skimmed the crossbar. For Belgium, it was a get out of jail card, Tielemans converting the spot-kick to propel Rudi Garcia’s side into the last 16. After 85 minutes, they trailed Senegal 2-0.

Just as it seemed Belgium would join Germany and the Netherlands in the World Cup departures lounge, Garcia’s side rallied to take an entertaining game to extra time. With an early exit and second-half stoppage time looming, Romelu Lukaku, a half-time substitute, and Tielemans scored a goal apiece as Belgium struck twice in three minutes to cancel out goals by Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr.
