The Children's Movie That Might End Up Making More Money Than Avatar: Fire And Ash

On December 19, 2025, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," the third installment of James Cameron's "Avatar" franchise, hit theaters. Within three days of its release, the film had already made $88 million domestically. Barely two weeks later that figure grew to $300 million – alongside a $1 billion performance worldwide. As of early January 2026, "Fire and Ash" sits as the third highest-grossing film of 2025. However, while "Avatar" still has weeks left in its theatrical run to move up in the rankings, it currently sits behind the animated sequel "Zootopia 2," which has made over $1.45 billion at the box office. The deciding factor in this box office battle may actually come down to China.

Just two days before, the newly crowned – yet almost wholly anonymous – Australian number one female player had been trounced 6-1, 6-1 by Iga Swiatek in front of 10,000 fans and the national TV cameras at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.

‘Mesmerising’ star one of many Aus answers for ‘handbrake’ as BBL gun catches eye

Watching Alex Carey flourish as a wicketkeeper has been a privilege, according to Australian great Adam Gilchrist — the man who presented the Ashes star with his baggy green cap just over four years ago.

In a phenomenal performance in Australia’s 4-1 triumph over England, 34-year-old Carey was involved in 28 dismissals and scored 323 runs at an average of 46.4, including a century at Adelaide Oval.

Carey, who took 27 catches and affected one stumping, finished just one dismissal behind the all-time Ashes record held by Brad Haddin and clearly outpointed rival Jamie Smith, who arrived in Australia with a big reputation.

The Ashes: Alex Carey Australia’s silent assassin against England as he joins rare wicketkeeping club

Australia’s silent assassin is being celebrated for an Ashes series that rivals some of the best wicketkeepers ever to hold the hopes of the nation in their gloves.

While Mitchell Starc and Travis Head stole the show across a 4-1 series win over England, Alex Carey’s work behind the stumps, as well as his important knocks in front of them, put him on the podium of performances this summer.

Carey was fittingly at the crease on Thursday to hit the winning runs as Australia put the cherry on another Ashes victory at the SCG, that final unbeaten knock taking him to 323 runs for the series at 46.14.

Alex Carey emulates Adam Gilchrist's feat in Ashes 2025-26: Details

Australia's wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey has emulated legendary Adam Gilchrist by scoring over 300 runs and making more than 25 dismissals in a single Test series.
Carey achieved this feat during the recently concluded Ashes 2025-26, becoming only the second player to achieve it in a single series, following Gilchrist's two occurrences.
He ended the series with a total of 323 runs and 28 dismissals behind the stumps in five matches.

Carey scored his maiden Ashes century in Adelaide, a series-sealing knock, and also had the honor of scoring the winning runs.
He ended the series with 323 runs in five matches and eight innings at an average of 46.14.
His tally included a century and two fifties, with his best score being an impressive 106.
Carey also made significant contributions behind the stumps with a total of 28 dismissals, including 27 catches and one stumping.

Poll shows One Nation Reaching New Heights

New federal polling shows the Coalition and One Nation are tied on a 23 per cent primary vote while Labor’s vote has fallen to 29 per cent.

The DemosAU Poll, first published in Capital Brief, -5.6 per cent swing against Labor since the May 2025 election and the -8.8 per cent swing against the Coalition has led to a swing of +16.6 per cent to One Nation.

In the first published federal voting intention poll of the year, the Greens and Others recorded primary votes of 12% and 13% respectively.

On a two-party preferred basis between Labor and the Coalition, Labor led 52-48 per cent.

Right-wing minor party One Nation' s popularity has skyrocketed with Australian voters to tie it with the coalition for the first time.

The first major poll in 2026, conducted by Demos AU for Capital Brief, has found almost a quarter of the electorate (23 per cent) would choose firebrand Pauline Hanson's party in primary voting.

That cut-through has been buoyed with its hardline conservative positions trumpeting anti-immigration stances after the Bondi beach massacre, where 15 people were gunned down on December 14.

One month on, Australia’s social media ban risks becoming symbolic

If the Albanese government intends this ban to be enforceable law, it must demonstrate a willingness to confront global technology companies when they fail to comply.

It has now been one month since Australia’s under-16 social media ban came into effect on December 10, and early signs suggest the legislation may be drifting into an uncomfortable space: morally correct in intent, but weak in execution.

In the past four weeks, many teenagers who were already active on platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat report little meaningful change. Some accounts were suspended, but many were not. Others were quickly reactivated through obvious workarounds – parental accounts, altered age settings, or alternative verification methods.

‘No one has a clue’: Blunt reality of pitch circus; who can’t afford final Ashes flop

The Ashes series finale is finally upon us, and while Australia wrapped up bragging rights a fortnight ago, the short-term futures of players — and a coach — could be swayed heavily by their output in Sydney.

Foxsports.com.au dissects the biggest talking points heading into the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG, starting on Sunday morning.

All eyes were on the SCG pitch this week after the Boxing Day Test wrapped up in less than 32 hours courtesy of some reckless batting and a bowler-friendly deck, which later received an ‘unsatisfactory’ grade from the ICC.

Aussies pull 138-year first as England bat first in Ashes finale

Beau Webster recalled, Todd Murphy again misses after Steve Smith said Aussies were 'backed into a corner' by a green pitch

Australia have pulled an unprecedented selection move for the final Ashes Test, leaving out their frontline spinner Todd Murphy and instead picking Beau Webster for his first match of the summer in Sydney.

Not since 1888, when cricket was completely unrecognisable to the professional game it is today, have the Aussies neglected to play a frontline slow bowler for a Test at the SCG, once considered this country's spin haven.

But, with England winning the toss and electing to bat first on a green-tinged pitch on Sunday morning, Steve Smith confirmed they had defied almost 140 years of standard practice and left out Murphy for the NRMA Insurance series finale.

Skipper Steve Smith has lamented the shift in SCG wickets that has Australia considering playing their first Test at the venue in almost 140 years without a frontline spinner as a “shame”.

Smith was as definitive as he’s ever been about taking one last chance to torment England in 2027, but conceded Australia still had multiple selection calls still in flux on Test eve given uncertainty around the much-scrutinised SCG pitch.

Arsenal ignored their defensive injury crisis to return to the top of the Premier League with a tense 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side were already without a host of defenders before Riccardo Calafiori was injured just before kick-off at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners made light of those absences as Martin Odegaard put them ahead in the first half before Georginio Rutter’s second-half own goal increased the lead.

Arsenal 2-1 Brighton: David Raya save keeps Gunners top of table

How Raya was able to execute 'absolutely brilliant' save against Brighton

Martin Odegaard scored his first goal of the season to help Arsenal beat Brighton and regain their place at the top of the Premier League – but it was their goalkeeper who produced the moment of the match.

With the Gunners holding on to a slender 2-1 lead in the final 15 minutes at a nervy Emirates Stadium, Brighton substitute Yankuba Minteh's brilliant curling strike from the edge of the box looked destined for the top corner.

The Spain international somehow produced an incredible piece of athleticism to tip the ball over the bar and prevent Brighton from coming two goals down to level.

Gabriel Jesus just explained what Gabriel Magalhães’ return really meant

December has been the month for injury returnees at Arsenal. They've had so many injuries this season that it's actually difficult to keep count.

So many strikers, defenders, and midfielders have gone injured in the last few months that it's actually been really difficult, as an Arsenal fan, to believe what they have been seeing.

Luckily, the players they have had on the pitch in their absence have also been exceptional, and that is why Arsenal are still at the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.

It has not been pretty sometimes, but Arsenal are getting the job done on a very consistent level, which is what matters when you have so many injuries to take care of.

Streaming through the service NOW, the Western thriller is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by cult author Joe R. Lansdale (Cold in July, Hap and Leonard).

Snow will fall this week from Tuesday, December 23, for at least a couple of days in elevated parts of Tasmania, with a few flakes likely to persist into Christmas Day.

That means a White Christmas for our southernmost state in the heart of the Australian summer.

Tasmanian summer snowfalls often consist of just a few flakes at the state's highest points, such as the summit of Cradle Mountain (1545m) or Tasmania's highest peak Mt Ossa (1617m).

Rare weather phenomenon may treat Aussies to first white Christmas in 19 years

Some among us could be lucky enough to enjoy a white Christmas this year. The rare Australian phenomenon last occurred almost two decades ago.

A senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) told Yahoo News the "unusual" event is looking likely for some in Tasmania. Others across the country will grapple with extreme heat or storms.

The bureau's Angus Hines said there was "definitely the potential" for some snow in southern and western areas of Tasmania on Christmas Eve and into Christmas morning if the forecast stays true.

"The period where it looks most likely is beginning on Christmas Eve and then heading into the first half of the day on Christmas morning, and then gets increasingly unlikely after maybe 8 or 9 am," he told Yahoo News.
