Run Away review – James Nesbitt and Minnie Driver give us comfort TV at its finest

The twists and turns come thick and fast in this deeply pleasing Harlan Coben thriller, as a father goes in search of his missing daughter. Even a vegan restaurant owner gets in on the act

They come round sooner every time, do they not? I think we’re now the recipients of a new Harlan Coben adaptation every three weeks or so. Who knows what rate will be attained next year? We watch and wait, though possibly in neither case for long.

We are now about a dozen, rating-banking offerings into the bestselling thriller writer’s multi-book deals with Netflix and Amazon. They are generally solid, workmanlike fare that doubtless help fund many passion projects and pay many mortgages along the way. They are comfort TV not just for viewers, but, I suspect, everyone involved.

Run review – crime caper about notorious bank robber Brenden Abbott misses a few tricks

This Binge series based on the so-called ‘Postcard Bandit’ has all the ingredients of a cracking drama but is foiled by uneven pacing

Any show with “Run” as its title surely ought to bolt out of the gates and fang it hell-for-leather – barely stopping to catch its breath, proverbial sirens wailing. So it was a touch disappointing to discover that this new six-part series about notorious bank robber Brenden Abbott (George Mason) takes a while to find its rhythm, jumping around in time and stop-starting when it could’ve been charging ahead. Non-linear structures can be invigoratingly unconventional but in Run it often stalls momentum and feels too clever by half.

This actor was cast as Australia’s most notorious bank robber. Then he got a call from prison

In 1987, Brenden Abbott – aka the Postcard Bandit – stole $112,000 from a branch of the Commonwealth Bank in suburban Perth. It was a bold armed robbery – dropping through the ceiling, just as the branch was beginning to open – but it also wasn’t uncommon. Armed bank robberies were almost an everyday occurrence in those days, as branches carried large amounts of cash and the security was rudimentary.

2026 Mini Cooper S review: JCW Sport

The first new petrol-powered, three-door Mini in a decade isn’t all-new, but it still moves the game on for the model – and is as fun to drive as ever.

Next year will mark the 25th birthday of the modern Mini, rebooted by BMW in 2001 as a higher-priced, retro-styled city car inspired by the original 1959 design.

The classic three-door is now in its fourth generation, rebranded as Cooper – rather than ‘Mini Hatch’, with Cooper in the variant name – and available in petrol or electric forms.

While the electric Cooper is all-new from the tyres up, keeping the petrol version alive has led Mini to a heavy update of the previous model launched in 2014, with new front and rear-end styling, a redesigned interior, new features, and tweaked engines.

Machu Picchu train crash leaves one dead and dozens injured

A train driver has died and at least 40 people have been injured in a head-on rail collision near Peru's most popular tourist attraction, Machu Picchu.

Two trains collided on the single track leading to the ancient Inca town on Tuesday, according to a statement from the local government.

It said that 20 ambulances had attended the scene and that injured people had been transferred to medical facilities in the nearby city of Cusco.

The US embassy in Peru said that US citizens were injured in the crash, while the UK Foreign Office said it was "supporting a number of British nationals involved".

Five Australians safe after fatal train crash near Machu Picchu

A train driver has been killed and at least 30 passengers injured when two trains collided head-on on the rail line to Machu Picchu, Reuters reports.

The ABC understands the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of five Australians aboard the two trains, all of whom are safe.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision near the popular archaeological site, which draws more than one million visitors each year.

Two trains have collided head-on on the railway leading to Peru's Machu Picchu, killing a train driver and injuring at least 30 passengers, according to Reuters.

Police are investigating the crash, which occurred on Tuesday, local time, and involved trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., companies that mainly transport tourists to the popular archaeological site. A health official said about 20 people were in a relatively serious condition.

Sunny Nights review – Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden’s sassy Australian comedy is criminally good fun

Despite a comedic surface, this playful romp is fundamentally a crime story that is less concerned with plausibility than having a good time

This very entertaining and sassy new series starring Will Forte and The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden joins a long line of productions about foreigners setting up shop in Australia. Things often don’t go well for outsiders attempting to make good down under – but unlike John Grant in Wake in Fright and, more recently, Nic Cage in The Surfer, American siblings Martin (Forte) and Vicki (Carden) don’t get psychologically pummelled by the sun. Their story is sun, for they are in Sydney to launch a spray tan business.

From The Good Place to the beach: D’Arcy Carden’s sunny new adventure

When D’Arcy Carden was first approached about taking on a role in new sitcom Sunny Nights, it sounded like a dream gig.

It was being shot in Australia, a country she had never visited but always wanted to. It was directed by Trent O’Donnell, who she worked with on the hit sitcom The Good Place, and there was talk fellow actor Will Forte — who Carden had been a fan of from afar for decades — was set to co-star. Carden was ready to jump at the chance, but there was just one question remaining: was this all a little too perfect? There must be a catch. Was the script terrible?

US stars shine in Sunny Nights, a catastrophic Sydney-set comedy of errors

Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden are siblings trying to make a buck off spray tan cans in this new Stan comedy series.

Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden bring their comedy chops to new series Sunny Nights, playing would-be spray tan entrepreneurs new to Australia.

Australia is renowned worldwide for its critters that will kill you, given half the chance, but it’s safe to say you are usually safe from the threat of being chomped by a croc in central Sydney. Not so in Stan’s darkly comic crime caper, Sunny Nights.

Co-created by Almost Paradise writers Nick Keetch and Ty Freer, with No Activity co-creator Trent O’Donnell directing all eight episodes, the series takes its name from the seedy motel hapless American siblings Martin (Will Forte) and Vicki (D’Arcy Carden) are forced to shack up in. Strapped for cash, they’re attempting to kick-start a spray tan business, working the angle that it will save souls from Australia’s kills-way-more-folks-than-crocs sun.

Ethan Hawke Turns in Stunning Performance as Lyricist Lorenz Hart in ‘Blue Moon,’ Talks It Up at the Riviera Theatre

My already high esteem for Ethan Hawke bumped up a few notches after catching his moving portrayal of tragic jazz legend Chet Baker, in the vastly underrated 2015 Canadian film Born to be Blue. Hawke’s latest triumph finds him deep in the shoes and addled brain of another legendary musician lyricist, Lorenz Hart, in another “blue” film, Blue Moon. Hawke nails both characterizations, with empathy and savvy to suit.

Hart and Baker are both American musical icons with sad life stories and diverse personalities — Baker, the laconic matinee idol felled by drugs and Hart, the acerbically witty partner of Richard Rogers, literally felled by drink. In Blue Moon, we join Hart’s saga at its dismal endpoint, with our protagonist staggering drunkenly in an alley way off of Broadway, in the rain, meeting his untimely finale at age 48.

Chasing The Gold: Interview: ‘Blue Moon’: Ethan Hawke on the inventiveness of Richard Linklater

Ethan Hawke says his journey with filmmaker Richard Linklater has led to the “role of a lifetime” playing Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. The two have been collaborating for years. Audiences got to watch Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) fall in love and then realize the reality of staying with a “soul mate” in the Before Trilogy. Hawke reprised his role as Jesse in the mixed media animation, Waking Life. He spent twelve years filming Boyhood. Hawke is in two of Linklater’s lesser-known works: The Newton Boys and Tape.

Nadine Whitney: You’ve spent a lot of time with Richard. He’s a genre chameleon in a similar manner to you and your choice of roles. Are you ever surprised by his ideas?

Revisiting Lorenz Hart – The Poet of Broadway

Before Rodgers and Hammerstein there was Rodgers and Hart yet most people know very little of Lorenz Hart even though they would have listened to many of his songs in every decade since the 1920s. His repertoire has been widely performed and recorded by generations of stars from Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and many singers of renown.

Richard Linklater’s newly released biopic Blue Moon has generated a renewed interest and introspection into his life and work. Linklater refers to the film “as a little howl into the night of an artist being left behind.” The film centres on the opening night of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma.

Sean Combs: The Reckoning review – you can see why the musician is fighting to ban this horrific documentary

Netflix’s series feels like the point of no return for the rapper and mogul. It’s so thorough in its harrowing detail that it will surely block any chance he ever had of a return to stardom

If its subject gets his way, the new documentary series Sean Combs: The Reckoning might not be available on Netflix for long. On Monday, lawyers on behalf of Combs sent a cease and desist letter to the streamer, demanding that the series be withdrawn based on the inclusion of footage that they claim violates copyright, and involves discussions of “legal strategy that were not intended for public viewing”.

Sean Combs' Mother Rips Netflix Over Alleged "Fake Narratives" In 'Reckoning' Docuseries

EXCLUSIVE: The Good Book tells us “a soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.” However, this week, Sean Combs‘ mother and Netflix both appear to have put the Bible lesson of Proverbs 15:1 out to pasture — as Janice Combs made glaringly evident today.

“I am writing this statement to correct some of the lies presented in the Netflix, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, released on December 2, 2025,” the octogenarian matriarch told Deadline today of the chart topping docuseries “These inaccuracies regarding my son Sean’s upbringing and family life is intentionally done to mislead viewers and further harm our reputation.”

The Abandons review – Gillian Anderson’s po-faced western has some very dodgy script moments

Icy mining magnate Gillian Anderson goes head to head with rebellious rancher Lena Headey in a drama that takes itself so very, very seriously

Angel’s Ridge, Washington Territory, 1854. It’s dusty, there’s a saloon bar, there are horses, an ineffable sense of – I don’t know, let’s call it manifest destiny – about the place, and the only colour settlers have brought with them is sepia. But wait! What’s this? The owner of the local silver mine riding into town? And it’s a woman! In a western?

Yessir, it is. Not only that but she is played by Gillian Anderson (in full ice mode, despite the dust) and is clearly trouble. Not only that, but there is a second woman about to go toe-to-toe with her and do battle for the town’s soul over the eight episodes that comprise The Abandons, the latest venture from Sons of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter. Its joint lead is Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan, a devout Irish Catholic woman who has gathered a misfit ragtag bunch of motley orphan crew outcasts about her and lives with this patchwork family in Jasper Hollow. Jasper Hollow, alas, is full of silver that Constance Van Ness (the local mine owner, played by Anderson) wishes to bring under her control to placate one of her investors.

‘The Abandons’ Review: Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey Lead Kurt Sutter’s Disappointingly Slight Netflix Western

Two matriarchs butt heads over the fate of their Washington Territory frontier town in this seven-part drama co-starring Nick Robinson and Aisling Franciosi.

For better and worse, Kurt Sutter is a television creator whom I associate with excess.

From his work writing on The Shield, through Sons of Anarchy and The Bastard Executioner, Sutter dramas have reliably, if not always pleasurably, delivered high dramatic stakes, wild emotional extremes and — once FX removed all pre-existing guardrails and said “Sure, do whatever you want, Kurt” — thoroughly unrestrained running times.

For better and worse, Kurt Sutter is not a television creator whom I associate with insufficiencies. I’ve never watched a Kurt Sutter show and thought, “Man, the language is insufficiently expressive, the violence insufficiently shocking, the characters insufficiently tormented, the themes insufficiently articulated, the episodes insufficiently long.”

'The Abandons' Is Everything Wrong With TV in 2025

The Abandons is a Rorschach test. What you see in the new Netflix western says at least as much about your perspective on the current TV landscape as it does about the show itself. Look at it one way, and it’s an innocuous potboiler—no masterpiece, sure, but entertaining enough to please fans of the genre. The girl-power themes; the casting of two beloved franchise leads, Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey, opposite one another; and the fact that it was created by Sons of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter are guaranteed to delight various key segments of the platform’s meticulously quantified subscriber base. But for anyone who sifts through huge quantities of television, The Abandons embodies everything that’s frustrating about the medium right now.
